Chipper and his art.
« on: August 14, 2016, 04:58:04 pm »
** As always, scroll through the thread as the newest stuff is always at the bottom, or my most recent reply.  I don't update the first post with all new stuff like some artsits. **

I've only ever really used pencil, paper, and colored pencils because that's just what I like.  Plus when I really drew a lot of things fifteen years ago, you didn't have digital art, no photoshop or anything like that, so traditional mediums it was.

Anyway, instead of posting all the old stuff first, I thought I'd share what I've done recently creating this new character, Chipper.  I've even taken the time to dapple into using GIMP, so that's my first time ever using the program and I think I spent about four hours making it look like that.  I don't think its bad for a first try.  If anyone would like to offer GIMP suggestions or tips to improve before I digitize any more of my stuff, please share. :)  I can always improve!

Enjoy.
Chip

Other stuff from 2000 when I was still in high school and sketching stuff.  These were all parts of stories I was writing down, and you can sometimes see the text that scanned through the page.  I had reference material to look at for all of these to get an idea of how to draw them correctly.

Book wolf - a good ol' murder mystery can never be put down!!! :D :D  On this one, I did not outline in rollerball blue pen.  I like the result better of not doing that.  This a camera phone picture, not a scan, so a tad soft.

It was suggested I give some more realistic art a shot to improve on some perspective skills, so I went and gave it a shot.  I have two realistic-ish shots of Chipper, one head, one full-body.  I know a professional will nit pick everything apart that still could be better, and frankly yes, I can always improve.  This was a first attempt at both--a realistic face, and then a realistic body, both with photo references of wolves to guide me on the fur pattern so I shade in the correct direction.

To note something as well because its noticeable in the entire thread.

Ver 1.0 of Chipper has silver on the belly and head.

Ver 2.0 of Chipper has light blue in the areas that were formerly silver.  It wasn't working on the realistic shots very well to put those blue and silver colors together, so the future shots will not feature any of the silver of the original.

EDIT - changed to scanned pictures instead of phone pictures :)

Great work, Chipper! I'm liking the Blu-Wolf. I love the emotive expressions in that fifth one down - in the one with the squirrel.  :)

I like your color schemes too, and it looks like you've made a lot of improvement while trying out new styles. I notice you've tried out GIMP as well! GIMP2 is my go-to for all computer-related artwork and editing. It's a pretty big program to tackle but once you get used to it, it can be really helpful. It can manage most of what other art programs do, except you don't have to pay $50-$100 for it.

So if you've ever got a question about GIMP2, drop me a line! I'm pretty familiar with it (been using for about 4-5 years now) and I know a place or two with tutorials on it.

Thank you, next time I attempt to do anything extensive with GIMP I will contact you for help.  That program is confusing as all heck with all the options and trying to figure out what they all do.  I tried someone's tutorial to try and make that GIMP picture look like he had fur--a very generic fur, and I couldn't even get that to work very well.   (:  A newb I am.

The one you like, is actually quite old....2000 or 2001 I'd have to go find it.  I want to say I used an old Ranger Rick magazine for reference with that one.  Couldn't tell you which issue offhand, probably an 80s one.

Your doing pretty well. It's always nice to see a bit of action in a drawing too.

Keep up the good work. :orbunny:

Continued thanks for the positive support and constructive criticism for those who have shared comments with me.  It helps immensely.

With that said, I have two new drawings to share, and these are both gift arts for a friend, who is big into the MLP:FIM fandom.  He showed me some amazing things he's doing with origami using characters from the show and his own creations.  I've never tried much of anything outside of canines, so this was a different step for me.

The first drawing I tried to make a furry pony, to take it a step beyond the flash animation of the show.  I don't think its too bad; unique for sure, and he loved the quote I picked. :)

The second picture here was simply an idea I had after finishing the first one.  Personally, I'm no brony and don't care for the show.  Likewise my pal isn't exactly into all the stuff I'm into either!  If both our characters were placed into a room on a couch, this might be what transpires:

(I will get a proper scan soon....this is a camera picture).  This image is important to me because its the first time I've gone and attempted a full-anthro body--of any character honestly.  I never drew fully anthropomorphic characters back in 2000/2001, so this is a big step into attempting more of this type of drawing.  Its not perfect but for a first try I'm not complaining with the end result!  Not certain if clothes are going to continue to be part of Chipper's wardrobe, but its growing on me the longer I look at the picture! :D

Enjoy,
Chip

Latest drawing.  I did this one entirely for fun; I wasn't practicing anything new or trying to go for a realistic look.  Inspired by a few things: Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford, Sherlock Hound (anime series), Jurassic Park, and of course my fursona! :)

Turned out kind of cute. :orbunny:

Drawing should be mainly for fun, unless of course it's your job. Even
then one should enjoy it.
