To color the pics like this one

I used a paint program called pixia, which is free since I don't have money for photoshop :\ I'm pretty sure you can use just about any software that allows you to use layers, though.

But the technique I used to color was to take the drawing, which is always shaded in grayscale with pencil

*Base Layer - Pencils* (the drawing was shaded with pencils first)

add a layer atop the drawing with the overlay setting, and color the desired colors on the added layer over the pencils.

*Overlay Layer - Colors* (Painted these colors on the overlay layer which is transparent over the drawing. note the light blue; It's the transparent color, which shows up clear in the drawing.)

The result is something that sort of looks like colored pencil on many rougher pencil strokes, and watercolor on parts with smooth shading.

*Layers Blended - Finished Product*

first layer          + second layer    = Colored Pic

Any comments and questions are much appreciated, since I know everything's not clear at this moment. I don't mind doing a little explaining ^_^

Thats cool you took the time to explain these things, well done...but Id just like to add an aditional note for the furs that only have photoshop:
For this to work, make sure you set your second layer mode to "Color" or you will just be painting over the original sketch in transparent. If you cant select "Color" as your layer mode, your sketch is currently in greyscale,in which case switch it to RGB. '<img'>

Thanks a bunch, Choky '<img'>
I had photoshop for a while, but not long enough to remember those little details when dealing with it.
