Here's a nifty tutorial on how to create a nifty stone texture in photoshop... just like the one used in This picture!

1.  Start with a new image in RGB mode.
2.  Make sure the foreground is black and the background is a light brown.
3.  Go to filter>render>clouds
4.  Make a new channel and name it "stone texture"
5.  Render some clouds on this channel using the cloud filter.
6.  Go to filter>render>lighting effects.
7.  Make sureyour texture channel is set on stone texture and the height is set at 100.
8.  Make the lighting any way you want!
9.  Hit OK and viola... instant stone.

You can also make a water texture a similar way.

Strange. Only a day or two after reading your post here, I learned about this same technique in class.  ':?:'

Cool technique BTW.

Oh, one small difference, we used two rock colors, like light brown and dark brown, instead of just light brown and black. ( we also used 'difference clouds' in the channel instead of normal clouds ) Results included sandstone, gold, and a variety of others. Mine had a silvery look to it.

That is wicked cool Ulario!  Do you learn these by playing around or do you have a book of some sort?

Do share some more of the tips!  I love playing around with this sort of stuff.  '<img'>

Ooh...sounds good, and easy to do. I've always found stone hard to make look right.

But...I try to do everything without using filters, special brushes, or smuding... but I'm just weird like that o.o'

Most of the things I know I've learned from playing around,etc... but I learned how to do stone textures in one of my college courses.

Ah it would have been nice to take a "useful" college course.  '<img'>  But then, I studied Computer Science and there's not much need for art courses in a CS degree...

Edit: What did you study/are studying Ulario?
