I know I'm 6 and a half months early, but I thought if the Anthrocon 2012 thread went up right after 2011 was over, why not start the MFF 2012 thread a bit early?

Does anybody plan on going this year?

I'll be attending and I'll be bringing Furtopian Stigandr along with me, if all goes according to plan Cheesy!
This year, there won't be any crazy notarization issues because I'll be 18 x.x

Man, I wish I could go. That's sad. I think it's awesome that you are going with someone from the forums, though. I hope one day to invite a friend here to come with me to a con. First things first, though. I need to get to a con. Some day, it'll happen. I'm sure.

I am currently unsure if I will be going this year, but I will try to arrange things so I can make it!  Last year was a lot of fun, even with all you crazy roommates! Wink  But really, I appreciated being able to room with people who could handle themselves.

This year, some of the things I would do differently would be to buy t-shirts and buttons early so I can wear them around the con, make sure I have duplicates of the con schedule, and try to just have some sit-down-and-talk time with friends so the whole con isn't just "Walk to ALL THE ROOMS!"

Yep.  This'll be my seventh year for MFF.  I plan to be in the dealer's room as usual, but I hope to actually be able to go to the meet and greet this time!  I've missed out on every year because of dealer room duties, but I may have to make an exception this year.

I would like to go too but need three things:
1) Permission from mate.  (Hardly likely)
2) Money (very unlikely unless I win megamillions)
3) Time off from work (easy enough long as its two weeks in advance)

I hope to go! Everything is tentative right now, as I'm applying for some internships in the Fall that might mess up plans, but MFF was my first con back in 2006, and I feel like it's time to make a return (6 years later? WOW). I'll be suiting and hoping to have a second suit done by then. Also, here's to hoping I can get some moves together to enter the dance competition!  Cheesy

Where is this being held? What state? Do you think a 14 year old can get in?

You can't get in unless you have a parent or other legal guardian sign a Parental Permission form. Most convention websites have them.

Midwest Furfest (MFF for short) is hosted in the suburbs of Chicago, which is in Illinois.

Do you think a 14 year old can get in?

Kobuk beat me to this; see his post.  As an alternative to having the notarized form filled out, you could also have your parent accompany you to the convention (see the "Minors at Midwest Furfest" section).  To my awareness, this used to be required of those under the age of 16; they must have changed that rule recently.

You can find out more about this con (including the stuff I already told you) on the con's website.  In fact, the first post of this thread could probably use a link to the con site. (*pokes Shim*)

At the time I posted this, the site wasn't up yet!

Right now, things look pretty good for Stigandr Smiley! He'll be flying in and we'll be going together. I'll probably be coming back home from school on Thursday after classes, picking him up that night, and we'll just be driving back and forth each day since my house is only half an hour away from the place. My only concern there is finding parking each day. We'll manage, I'm sure Tongue!

I wish that it was possible to attend this event as so many of the great fursuiters are there. Chicago has got to be a 4-5 hour trip one way from Saginaw Bay. Plus it's the first weekend of the MI firearm deer season.

Are you in Illinois, Carter?

(Regardless, you have to be at least 16 to attend without a parent.)

I thought so, too, but I couldn't find that in the rules this year; I think they changed the requirement such that a parent's presence or release is OK for minors of any age.  Either that, or they seriously botched their convention rules somehow...

From the MFF code of conduct:

Quote
GENERAL RATING AND BEHAVIOR

Public spaces open to patrons of our host hotel are rated 'PG' at all times. All programming during the day will be open and appropriate for all members of Midwest FurFest. During the evening hours, some events may contain strong language or adult themes these events will be restricted to mature audiences only, and minors under the age of 18 will not be admitted without their parent or guardian. Convention Security will check badges at the doors of these events.

As part of the PG rating, we require that parents accompanying children under the age of 16 be aware of where their child is and what their child is doing at all times.

[. . .]

MINORS AT MIDWEST FURFEST

Anyone who is under the age of 18 years at any time during the convention must present a signed and notarized parental permission form, unless accompanied by a parent or able to produce evidence of legal emancipation. There are no exceptions.

Minors are not permitted under any circumstances to enter areas that have been designated for mature audiences.

Anyone providing false documentation of identity or age will be denied membership and reported to the police.

For anyone under 16 looking to go, you may want to email con staff to verify what constitutes acceptable parental permission.  This is *not* something you want to be wrong about when walking into the con...
