A common enemy, I got one! Primates. Er, Monkeys, apes, gorillas, and the like. Maybe because they're too human or something?

Ya know, me being here has a inevitable sense of irony since truthfully, I am not a furry.

A race of peaceful, in-tune with nature furs being destroyed by climate change.  Wouldnt that be ironic?  and funny? I think so  Cheesy

Climate change! Now, why didn't I think of that? It's the old "man vs. nature" conflict in literature, and it plays off the in-tune-with-nature image that has been perpetuated in furry writings. Good idea!

Ever played Pingus? (LINK) It's a Lemmings clone about a tribe of penguins who set out to discover why their icebergs are melting, and it's available for every OS. Very cute. ^.^

Incidentally, as far as "alien dragons" go, I always liked the idea of dragons in mecha-sized suits of powered armor!

Did someone say "Meta Ridley"? Upside down

The only problem I see with the climate change idea is that it seems like it's a bit overused... then again, what isn't while being within the limits of a rational idea? Ah well, it's just my own opinion anyway.

A lot of good ideas have been posted!

Here's a twist on the cliche human v. furry concept:  There's a race of Furries of varying species who attempt to genetically engineer the "perfect being."  Some way or another (it would have to be well thought out) it turns out to be human!  But something ambiguous goes horribly wrong and a millenia-long conflict ensues, obscuring the history behind it: that the furs actually created the humans.

Wait.  I'm gonna write this story.  It's good!

He's a cybernetic dragon, not a dragon in a mecha-sized suit of powered armor. And am I the only one who sees Metroid Prime as a sci-fi take on the age-old story of knights versus dragons?

Veering a bit off-topic here, but I don't think that it is quite right to condense all the hatred between Samus and Ridley down to a case of metaphor. Those two have a very personal history and disgust between them that doesn't mirror any particular story of knight-vs.-dragon that I know of, though of course I could be wrong.

I think having a group of people labeled as "Fur" and pitching them against Humans (a.k.a. "Non-Furs") is a terrible idea. That sort of literature makes several strong statements.

Firstly, it's saying, "We're a minority that is generalized and heavily persecuted by everyone that isn't us."

It's also saying, "We are insular."

"We are vindicated because we are different."

"We would rather conflict with mainstream rather than try to establish ourselves beside it."

Worst of all, it says, "We are not a legitimate entity because our entire cultural identity is based on being different from everyone else."

Which is why i'm looking for a DIFFERENT common enemy than the cliche ones.   ^.^;

I still say furry drama or some other kind of internal problem, the true enemy has to come from within right? Ever feel like you can be your worst enemy sometimes?

Well, I'm in the middle of writing a story. Right now, I'm creating a common enemy to all furs within it to be nothing but the darkness within their hearts. Much like the enemy within theme, but the darkness eventually manifests into a physical form. It is always changing, and incredibly hard to destroy. I didn't want to repeat the usual fur on human conflict.

Generic Enemy list for stories. Wink

Human overlords

Neo Humans coming back from deep space etc. to cause trouble.

Meat eating Furs...mmm your tasty.

Random Mutants, they're random.

Random Alien horde, they're random with spaceships.

Silicon based lifeforms

Virus lifeforms small with Napoleon complex.

Parasites/Mind controllers looking for a place to set up shop...usually in your body.

Plant lifeforms always need room to grow.

Insects always good there are plenty to shoot.

Machines, lots of them.

Demon lifeforms they have nothing better to do than start stuff.

An Ancient civilization thought dead, making a comeback always involves
trying to wipe you out for some reason.

I want to be God and remake the world jerk, not to be confused with just apocalypse jerk.

Ultimate evolution! Which can make those random mutants BTW
Mix and match as needed...

*hides it under his mattress*

Gah! I ought to drag you out from under that mattress and bonk you on the head! I swear its like you reached into my brain and sucked that idea right out of it. I kid, I kid. For a long time now though I've had a similar concept in mind. The other day in fact I was talking about it with some like-minded people (in a somewhat surprising place).

In any case. I figured the furries in this would would have a long bloody history of conflict between the different species. The most progressive among their kind would speak of being tolerant enough not to try and enslave all others. Equal rights? Unheard of. They'd be quite speciesist. However they would also be smart enough to know that as their technology increases the threat of nuclear or biological war means they could all be at risk of extinction. Thus a few brainy lab rats (literal lab rats I suppose) concoct a plan. They will combine the DNA from every sentient species on the planet and create a new race which they can all look down upon. The carnivores can hunt and eat them, the herbivores can use them as guardians. All can use them as slaves.

In a simplistic way it makes perfect sense. Humans evolved naturally but honestly, how closely do they resemble apes? Not very closely in my opinion. On the other hand, why shouldn't they? Why shouldn't a sentient race evolved from wolves very obviously resemble wolves? That's the basis for this.

In the end these "humans" (or oomans if you're so inclined) wouldn't take too kindly to this situation. They are after all intelligent beings and they desire their own freedom. I like it for the same reason Wolvenblaze does; it turns an old stereotype on its head. A little tongue-in-cheek I suppose. Ultimately though, I think the level of cliche in a setting is dependent on how you depict the individuals from each group.

Eachother? Like Predators VS Prey, territorial disputes, etc. Like with ordinary animals, certain species don't get along, so I'd guess you would get the same result with anthros. If I put a wolf anthro with a cow anthro I can somewhat guess what would happen.

With humans, it's waaaay over done and aren't anthros basically half human anyway? That and with anthros maybe talking and having very human emotions it could become difficult to kill them without feeling even the tiniest bit of empathy.
