How awful...

Drinking and driving is really not all that different from murder and yet it's quoted as a separate statistic that takes three times as many lives. I read through all of the stories in this topic and it makes me realize, throughout the harsh reality of the stories told, what a fatal combination alcohol and actions such as driving can be.

And that is why I'm never. Ontario's G1 and G2 graduated-licensing conditions state that you must have a blood alcohol level of zero while driving at all times, and I'm glad that's the case, because people are just going to be stupid. Mind you, people who have their full licenses are quite stupid too.

It was in my driving class that I thought of a "three strikes" rule for drunk drivers:
- The first time you get pulled over for driving drunk, you get your license suspended, plus a very deterring fine of four or five digits (I personally like the Scandinavian system of taking a percentage of your income).
- The second time, it's a longer suspension and larger fine.
- The third time, jail time and a permanent suspension.
- That doesn't even count the people who aren't stopped by the cops and end up causing an accident. If you're involved in an accident while drunk, you go to jail right away and lose your license permanently.

He is in good shape, Authorities say his drunken state saved his life as well as saving him from serious injury.

That's a load of bull.

Studies show that intoxication drastically increases the chances of brain injury because of the chemical processes that take place. People who are drunk are much more likely to suffer this. unless there was a freak instance in this case, this man was just extremely, EXTREMELY lucky.

Its my own two cents that driving drunk and killing someone is tantamount to murder. It doesn't matter that your judgement was impared, if you shot someone with a gun while drunk its still murder and if you kill someone with a car its just the same.

Well, manslaughter technically (unless the drunk driver was deliberately trying to run the person down), and it already is, I think.  If not it certainly ought to be.

Anyway, I will probably never drink, period.  The way I see it, there's no real difference between drinking to get a buzz and drinking to get plastered, except the level of effect.  Either way you're taking alcohol as a mood-altering drug, and that whole concept scares the bajiggers out of me.

I think a big part of the problem is that if a person's drunk, they're in too much of a stupor to realize that they shouldn't be driving.  If it were up to me, a bartender would not legally be allowed to let a drunk person leave the bar knowing they'd have to drive away, at risk of losing their liquor license for good.  You're gonna give someone a dangerous chemical to put in their system, you're partly responsible!

This is Octan the ranting canine, and that's all I have to say about that.

It makes me sick to think how often this happens.

I think that some states have a law like, but I could be mistaken.

Drinking to get drunk is stupid.
I really hate hearing/seeing the other college girls on campus when they've come back absolutely smashed.  I don't see a reason for it and to me it's nothing more than a great disrespect to yourself.
Agreed. It seems like that is the only reason that people in my college drink, is to get drunk. Why would you do that? I have a hard time as it is not making idiot out of myself sober.

The problem here is that too many of them don't care if they lose their license. They just go out and still drive drunk with out a legal license. Doens't do much good taking them away.
Exactly, they don't care. If they get pulled over drunk again, a license isn't going to do them much good.  I think that the first offense need to be more than just  the lost of driver's license. People will be less likely to drive drunk if they are fined heavily, or given jail time after just one arrest.
The sad part of this all, is the fact that the drunk almost always seems to walk away from the crash just fine but everone else doesn't. But just think how screwed up these people have to be after they sober up. They have to live the rest of their life knowing that because of something stupid that they could of easly of changed, someone is dead because of them. Not to metnion the people that are left behind in this mess. No matter what is said it doesn't change the fact that these people are gone forever. It just such a waste.

Ugh, I can't belive people like that  '' . Why for the love of all that is holy and righteous do they even get so deeply inebriated, let alone belive they can operate a vehicle in their condition? My prayers go out with yours, Raust.

I myself am not adverse to the occasional glass or two of finer wines, and am very particular in my taste. I rarely, if ever, go past two glasses, whether I'm eating out or at home. I revile the liquors and beers, not only for their repulsive taste, but for their apparent sole purpose of introducing alcohol into the body as quickly as possible (beer is carbonated as most wines are not...the carbonated gas carries alcohol more quickly to the brain).

I agree with Sporty here. If you do something that stupid you should not be given the chance to do it again. I don't drink at all and never plan to, but I have nothing against alcohol. Personally, I think it's stupid, but I understand that some people like it. However, if you're stupid with it I think you need to be put away before you hurt anyone. It's really a stupid thing to do, everyone knows it, but people do it anyway. It really sucks. No real good way to stop them if they are free, though, so a life sentance is really the best way to fix the problem.

I drink and I enjoy it. Godd thing is, I would never think of getting behind the wheel after drinking. I'm one of those few who will stay home to drink unless I'm at a friends and can crash or someone sober is driving me.
