Pet help needed!
« on: December 14, 2016, 06:53:42 pm »
My sweet little baby peanut has been with us the second longest to buttercup.

So since 2011 I think.

Anyhow my deadbeat half-brother dropped a pitbull mix on my parents lap and left.

She's very annoying, and very needy (it's cute when it's a small dog, but large breeds are annoying when they act like lap dogs), her name is hazel.

Peanut hates her, or is very annoyed by her too, to the point of biting at her, she isn't this way with the other dogs, just hazel.

Peanut likes her space, so she will nip at all of the dogs if they come too close.

Anyhow, I'm not always at home, and Peanut lives with her girlfriend Butter, so if hazel did anything harmful to her (God have mercy on her 'cause I won't 'cause peanut is my baby!!!) I wouldn't be able to prevent any further damage or save my baby.

How can I get her to stop biting at hazel?
Is it that she can read how much I dislike hazel, so in turn she is annoyed by her too?

Peanut also gets annoyed when she plays physically with smaller dogs, I don't think she knows they are playing and she *hates* physical violence between others with a passion (be it human or animal).

I've only had to separate them once, but once she's angry she'll want to chase what ever it is down and hunt it down (Peanut).

Anyhow, how can I get her to ease up?

First of all, why did your deadbeat half-brother drop the dog off at your parents? Is there some reason why he can't take care of it?

'Cause he just did, it used to be his dog but he left without her, he don't care about her.

If he can't or won't take care of the dog for whatever reason, then I foresee only one or two solutions:
a) Sell the dog on your own.
b) Take the dog to the Humane Society.

It's obvious this dog isn't getting along with the other dogs very well. so the best course of action is to take the dog to the nearest animal shelter and hope somebody else will adopt it.

Although, if it were me, I'd take the dog right back to your half-brother and tell him "Hey, it's your dog, therefore YOUR responsibility!" and I'd be shouting that right in his face.  >:(

The other thing you and/or your parents have to consider is if you have the money and resources to take care of another pet. If you don't, then the only option is to take the dog to the animal shelter. It may sound "heartless" to do that, but the shelter has more and better resources to take care of the dog (Healthwise) and hopefully find an owner for it.

I'm actually really liking the humane society idea, she's ran off once before so it's not like it would be all that hard to lie about it.

Just get her in my car and drive her there and tell them my brother abandoned her and we can't afford to take care of her and viola! Problem solved, all I'd have to say is that she chased after another dog while she went out to pee and the deed would be done.

He's halfway across the country, so the option of taking her to him isn't really an option.

Just curious, but why did your half-brother get the dog? How long did he have her for before dropping her off with the parents? Has the dog been to the vet and had any checkup or shots? What's the history of this dog? The dog hasn't been abused in any way by your half-brother, has it?

He had it from his previous relation with his pet hoarding girlfriend (hoarding pets does NOT give them a better life people!)

He didn't even have her for a full year, that worthless deadbeat!

I'm not sure what shots she's had, but she's got pills for flea dermatitis, and she goes in the house. -_-

She's had a lot of owners so she has separation anxiety but it's ridiculous!

I'm not sure on the abuse aspect, he used to whack her on the head for jumping all over him and she used to chew things up all the time, she even broke a window screen just to be outside with him.

She's a giant pain, and I won't stand for her possibly harming my child.

I've only had to separate them once, but if it happens again by God she's gone!

After everything you've mentioned, the only solution I can really give is to take the dog to the Humane Society. Period.

There's absolutely nothing I can do to help them bond or like each other?

"Pet Training" isn't my cup of tea so to speak. Maybe you can get some advice from the animal shelter or try finding an obediance school on the Internet or maybe some books that can give you some advice.

my best advice would be to bring her to some pitbull shelter or something. there have been lots of people who are all supportive of pitbulls so its possible she will be fine. also if you can keep peanut in your room when you are not around.

also one random thing..... what color is hazel (if her name is misleading), any idea how old, and did your brother give her the name or did he get the dog with that name?
i am asking this because that dog sounds exactly like a dog my mom had a few years ago, and its creeping me out a little. same name, possibly same color, similar to the behavior you described, runs away alot, has a sketch history of owners, ect.. that sounds exactly like her..

I'd say either read some dog training books or if you live in Oregon take her to the Multnomah county shelter. I used to volunteer there and there's lots of pitbulls there. It's even a non kill shelter! And as for recommended books anything from Michele Welton. Just go to this website to learn more http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/

Dogs like most social animals try to climb the social ladder so to speak.
Your dog likely see's the Pitbull as an intruder. Unless you have the time
to teach the Pitbull who is boss of your family. It's probably best to take
the dog to a shelter. Left alone the dogs may end up fighting for dominance.

A Pitbull is a heavy strong animal and  might end up kiiling your dog.
Pitbulls have a bad reputation, but it's more due to bad owners than
the dog it's self. Any dog that hasn't been socialized will revert to feral
tendencies. Many people buy a pitbull for a watch/guard dog, and never
take the time to train them.
