I've pulled blankets over my head, while hiding in a box, in the closet, under a rock, in a small dark room, on a distant desert island no ones ever even heard of.
I have trouble telling people what flavour of ice cream I like! Somehow, I think I'm likely to stay isolated for a long long time. I’ll keep the links handy just in case Here’s hoping tomorrow is less scary than today.

im in the "furry closet" but it's ok with me cause i allready got to much to worry about right now to start thinking if people know that i like furrys or even if they know what furrys are , but my opinion is that other furrys shouldn't worry to much about this you don't have to have a fursuit o even a collar to be a furry ,just be yourself and tell people if you want and if you're ready to do it

For me it isn't a problem. My family knows I have always loved animals. So to them, this is normal. Though I do have a HUGE collection of plushies and animal nik-naks that WS and I enjoy having around. (though he doesn't like having to find a new home just for them! ) LOL

I'm not so much anymore, but I think I should retreat back into it -_-;
For example, I spent the night at my friend's place and left my collar there. He's completely ignoring the fact that I left my collar and he seems to be avoiding returning it, as he finds furriness wierd.
I have gone over a week without my collar and I'm going nuts >.@
Next, I'm getting teased and classified by my friends. I was riding in the car with one of my friends and a friend of his, and we were talking about road kill for a minute. They don't see a problem with it and I joked saying, "But they're so cute!" and my friend just says, "He's a furry" as if it's some sort of classification of society.
I don't know but I'm getting rather annoyed >\

Yep, people are special(including us). Eh, I could care less if some found out/knew I was a furry. My parents don't know what a furry is and they know I'm kind of "special" anyway. I don't really were my tail around the house a lot due to the fact my sister is accident prone and tends to spill any liqid placed on the table in front of her. So I don't want a sticky tail. I only wear it around my mate since I"m usually out of the house. Anyway they just see the tail and collar as part of my "specialness." Though my mate's a lot more open about his "furriness" since he is usually running around with his tail, tag, and collar on 75% of the time. I guess it's a personal preferance, I just tend to be secretive, but I'm this way about a lot of things not just my "furriness".

If there's a closet, I was locked out from the start! '> But I usually just keep it to myself unless somebody asks, no biggie to me. These links sure help for those who don't know furry, or for those who are misguided, thanks! Could have helped alot when I was talking to my good friend who didn't know what it was. I sent him the I'm Furry rap song. *laughs*

I'm in the closet really...only my mate knows and he is ok with it. I really dont intend on coming out, seeing my only really good friend in RI is a co-worker, so that wouldnt work so well now will it? *locks the door and huddles in her little nest*

I never really thought of furry as something to be in the closet about. It's an interest I have, just like music, sci-fi/fantasy, anime and motorcycles. Furry doesn't define me. It is a part of who I am, but it's only a part.
My wallpaper on my computer at work is my fursona playing a guitar and I occasionally where shirts with furry art on them out in public at non-furry events. If I get a reaction at all to these things, there usually positive. I never had any really negative comments. The majority of people just ignore it.
I don't talk much about my furry activities or the fandom with co-workers and friends not because I want to hide it, but because they are not interested. If someone shows an interest in any of my furry stuff I'm quick to talk about as it is something I enjoy.

Excellent post! And yet, I am still a bit too much of a wimp to simply come outright and tell my friends and family as of now. For the time being, it will remain a more personal obsession. Though I do show subtle nuances of my Furriness in school and home, especially through my popular plushie, Evellyn and her girlfriend, Georgina and my passionate admiration for foxes, foxiness, and all that is fox.
In fact there was one occasion where a friend of a friend was blatantly showing of his new fox-hair jacket, during which he specifically dictated the process by which he trapped, killed, and skinned the fox. Needless to say, my verbal assault upon the kid got some strange looks from friends.
Yea, I think if I told anyone I was a furry, it wouldn't cause much surprise, and still.....not yet.

The collar and plushies are dead giveaways. "Lion obsession?" Yes, we stock that here.
I won't run it into other people's faces and up their noses, but I'll answer questions. Or, in some cases, a series of questions...
Most, however, don't even know what furry is. "Everyone, I have to confess. I'm a furry." "So shave." "..."

Exactly. There is no "furry closet".
By the way, what's with a mod bumping a 3 month old topic?

This topic may be old, but it is still important enough IMO that ANYONE can post in it and offer whatever helpful advice they can for anyone who is afraid of telling other people they're a furry and so forth.

I don't think it was so much a bump, as perhaps a desire to say something.
There is a constant debate amongst topians about opening new topics when older ones exist. The site does offer a search function (button at the top) that allows one to search for topics no longer being discussed. Many are still interesting.
For example, there is currently a topic discussing the NARNIA dvd coming out. Should that have been created, or simply be put as part of the original topic on the NARNIA movie discussed last year? Actually, considering how many furs were bashing the film prior to it being released, that topic might be embarrassing to some.

My parrents wont know about me being a furry. Just like they wont know Im bisexual. Not because they wont understand, but because we are not on the best terms. We talk, and usually enjoy each others company, but there are sometings i dont want them to know.

My parents have a hard enough time when I told them I was into LARP, they thought it was a cult. They had a hard time when I told them I was going out with someone ten years older then me...(Yes my mate is 31 and I am 21)...even harder time when I told them I was marrying him. If I ever told them I was a fur? Disowned. Not like I really ever talk to them anymore but still...

I don't know.. How can you lock yourself up if nobody knows of it in the first place? I guess my coming out as gay shocked enough already.. They see my ears just as a fact of weirdness I carry.. Let's make it more worse with a tail!

My advice is just don't make a big deal of it.
And if your friends don't understand, then realise that they probably weren't your friends to begin with.
And if your family don't like it, tell them how old you are and that it's your life.
And if some randomer on the street gives you grief for wearing a tail or whatver, just tell them to go make love to themselves and walk on.
Don't listen to what others say. Tis your life, not theirs.

Well put Rooster. I'd love to be able to say something to people, and since I came back from one of my first Furcons, I've come dangerously close to telling a few friends that I'm a furry, but the fear of reactions and perception holds me back. I WISH I could say something, but I just don't have the inner strength to say it.
At the moment, I'm so far in the closet that I think I havve a hanger with my name written on it. '>
