Well, International Talk Like a Pirate Day is coming up soon, so to get myself in a good piratey mood I decided it would be interesting to see who everyone's favorite pirate is.

Personally, my vote goes to Guybrush Threepwood because I'm an unashamed fangirl of both him, and the Monkey Island games; but Captain Sparrow comes in a close second.

So, who be ye favorite swashbuckler??

Jack sparrow, just because, well, what can i say, he's awesome! Cheesy
I daresay jack is the only pirate witty enough to outsmart a ninja.

Landrav raises an excellent point, though I've gotta go with Captain Jack Sparrow. After all, what's not to love with that guy? Cool

Is there no love for the one and only Pirate King

This is a man who leads the most fearsome Pirates of Penzance, as you can see here.

It's easy for me to forget about Don Karnage because I only got to see a tiny bit of TaleSpin as a kid.  I'd give him my vote for best furry pirate, but honestly, you have to go for the Dread Pirate Wesley...er, Roberts! Wink

The one and only Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard.  He made his home on North Carolina's coast, and he's a bit of a local hero, despte his piracy.

My favorite Pirate is Elsid Barrett. He sailed the high seas off American waters during the revolutionary period. His ship, a sloop called the Antelope was underpowered with only a few 4" cannons, but it was enough to pirate some of the merchant vessels sailing the eastern seaboard. The reason Barrett is my favorite was that on their first and only engagement, an American Clipper sank her in the Atlantic. The moral to this story, is Don't Mess with the U.S!

Barrett's Privateers is also a fun little Sea Chanty that I occassionally perform during traditional Irish Sessions. The lyrics of the song are as follows:

Oh the year was 1778,
how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now.
A letter of mark came from the king,
to the scummiest vessel i'd ever seen,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

Oh Elcid Barrett cried the town,
how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now;
for twenty brave men all fishermen who,
would make for him the antelope's crew,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

The antelope sloop was a sickening sight,
how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now;
She'd a list to the port and her sails in rags,
and the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

On the king's birthday we put to sea,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now.
We were ninety-one days to montego bay,
pumping like madmen all the way,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again,
how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now.
When a bloody great yankee hove into sight,
with our cracked four pounders we made to fight,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

The yankee lay low down with gold,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now.
She was broad and fat and loose in stays,
but to catch her took the Antelope two whole days,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

And at length we stood two cables away,
how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now.
Our cracked four pounders made an awful din,
but with one fat ball the yank stove us in,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now.
Barret was smashed like a bowl of eggs,
and the main truck carried off both me legs,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of barrett's privateers.

So here I lay in my twenty-third year,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now.
Its been six years since we sailed away,
and I just made halifax yesterday,
God damn them all.

I was told we'd cruise the seas,
for american gold we'd fire no guns,
shed no tears!
Now i'm a broken man on a halifax pier,
the last of Barrett's privateers.
The last of Barrett's privateers!

Oh holy crap! Barrett's Privateers! One of my good friends at college was very into maritime history (a.k.a. pirates), and she introduced this shanty to our whole circle of friends. We used to have periodic spontaneous singalongs. Cheesy

Guybrush Threepwood all the way!  My sister named her dog after him!  Plus, I used to use him as an avatar all the time. Smiley

This thread has made me remember all the awesome pirates out there.  The Dread Pirate Roberts would probably be second...

... has anyone seen Blackbeard's Ghost? o.o
