Two Jazz albums that broke me into the scene are "Time Out" by the Dave Brubeck quartet, and "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis. For a great sampler of some of jazz's best, search out the album "The Best Of Blue Note" . It has many really good artists, like John Coltrane, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messingers, Herbie Handcock, Horace Silver, and MORE! Some others I enjoy-- Ramsey Lewis, Cannonball Adderly, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus...... well, that's PLENTY to get you started. Don't want to overwhelm you!! Hit me up anytime for some jazz talk.

Hey, I'm slowly getting into jazz too. Smiley

Like RebelKat said, "Time Out" and "Kind of Blue" are both awesome albums. I've also spent a lot of time rocking out to Charles Mingus lately, and I definitely recommend his albums "Blues and Roots" and "Mingus Ah Um." Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane are also amazing. And Louis Armstrong, of course. Go find his recording of "West End Blues" and listen to it sixty-five times in a row.

Years ago, Ken Burns did a documentary series on jazz. I've never actually seen it, but there are two really great CD box sets associated with it - one is 5 CDs, the other is 22. I have acquired the 22-CD set and have slowly been working my way through it. Smiley It's pretty great if you're serious about getting into jazz.

right *rubs paws together*

i'm a jazz musician in the uk, trying to break into the scene. i'll help lol;

miles and coltrane are a fantastic place to start... but charlie parker is just as important... those three people above all are the top listens;

miles davis - you should get 'kind of blue', 'birth of the cool' and 'bitches brew' ... the last one specificaly is a must have for any jazz music fan

coltrane - 'blue trane', 'love supreme' and 'crescent' are the three albums

charlie parker - pretty much anything by him is good

...

here are some other names which will definitely turn out some amazing jazz for you to listen to;

ornette coleman
eric dolphy
chet baker
gerry mulligan
sonny rollins

and for modern stuff

keith jarret
jan garbarek
tomasz stanko
jack dejohnette

and my fav musicians

tord gustavsen
andy sheppard
arve henriksen
art pepper
seb rochford

if you want any more feel free to add me on msn! if there are any tunes you're looking for i can send you them too

I like a lot of the more 'open' Improv/Free Jazz.

Check out Grachan Moncur, Peter Brotzmann, and The Sun Ra Arkestra. You will also not be let down by Miles Davis' electric era which started with his 'Bitches Brew' release and continued through the 70's. Check out  Centipede's Septober Energy release for the best  Jazz Fusion Orchestra that I've heard.

Also, if you ever want to check out what happens when Doom/Stoner Metal is heavily influenced by Improv Jazz, look out for Acid Mothers Temple. Another cool band from Japan is Koenji Hyakkei, who mix Improv Jazz and Math Rock. --I don't know what it is, but when you get below the J-Pop surface of contemporary Japanese culture, Japan currently has a thriving underground music scene that's either the equivalent of, or surpasses the rock music scene in the US and Europe of the late 60's and early 70's.

Call me out for being a bass player, But I would have to Recommend Jaco Pastorius. It's more fusion Jazz, but it's great stuff. The strength of the album lies in the arrangement, as there's some great strings and piano to be heard. Not two songs have the same feel, and there's plenty of musical twists and turns.

If your enjoying Mile's "Kind of Blue" album, check out his "E.S.P." album too, it's great! Also, if you are enjoying John Coltrane, also check out Canonball Adderly's "Somethin' else" album. Canonball and Coltrane did a collaberation album together too that is really good, it's called (strangely enough) "Canonball and Coltrane".
And don't leave out Canonballs, brother, Nat Adderley,too. Mostly anything from "The Nat Adderly sextet" is some awesome jazz, especially the live albums!

What other artists have you been enjoying?

Here's something fun.... Listen to a track from Horace Silver, "Song for My Father" , and then listen to Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number".
Notice something?

Pat Metheny might be a good one to check out. Django Reinhardt isn't too bad either. I'd recommend "A Secret Story" and "Imaginary Day" by Metheny. Can't suggest any albums for Reinhardt since all I own by him is a collection ("Jazz Tribute No. 39, The Indispensable Django Reinhardt" I think is the name)

I don't listen to Jazz too often, but I toss it on every once and awhile. I bounce around between genres all the time though.

Either way, hope that helps... Smiley
