http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckypaper

Anyone know if there's an ETA on commercial mass production of this stuff?
Currently it's ridiculously expensive... a sheet about the size of letter size paper is approximately 1500 USD in cost!

I'm going to coat my car with laminated plates of this stuff. Maybe I'll get an auto insurance discount Tongue Haha.  Cheesy

2-3 years, according to this article: thefutureofthings.com/articles.php?itemId=24/61/

Also, coating your car with the stuff isn't such a bright idea: what's going to happen is, you'll crash your car, the car will stop instantly and be totally undamaged, while you keep going forward thanks to Newtons First Law and splatter your face against the windshield at 50 mph. That's why your car has crumple zones.

even with costs CF and such aside the cost of the maintance of a fully cover carbon fiber car would really REALLY suck.

Even with standard CF it has to be specially uv treated to keep the sun from slowly causing it to degrade and even then it still does over time.

not to mention CF on a car is a theft magnet like you have never seen. It basicly screams jack my crap.

Thats why you get a "Trunk Monkey Theft Retreveal System" to protect it.

At risk of derailment... but is there a reason that CF parts are never painted, other than to show off and say 'hey look, it's a CF hood/trunk/spoiler/fender/etc !'  Like, wouldn't a body-color coat of paint help with both the theft issues and the UV degradation issues?

Back to the buckypaper, it seems that you'd be unnoticed by enemy radar systems if your car were covered in the stuff. You know, just in case you're flying your car through restricted airspace.

Buckypaper is radar proof?  Cheesy

And no, the car doesn't stop instantly, you do go forward, but it's the other object that ends up with additional damage. Anyways, I'm a good driver, but people in a parking lot parking their cars... Well, With a buckypaper coating, I can shop in confidence, knowing that my car is safe from bad drivers.

And CF =/= buckypaper...

I wonder if we could make massive airships of buckypaper laminate? (or super big 'buckydisks' which would be more like 'buckyplates'?)
Epic structural integrity, and an absurdly low mass!

Thats pretty much why the standard buyer buys CF and puts it on there car ( to show off )  if they painted it that would defeat the purpose.
But yes if they painted over the cf part with good paint it would protect it from uv damage.
You pretty much get the same stats out of quality fiberglass parts at 1/2 the cost of CF but they just dont look as JDM as cf parts.

And to Avan these carbon nano tubes are what they are planning on making the space tether out of. if u google it u can prolly find the information on line.

How did CF car parts even come up? (Buckypaper isn't CF... two relatively unrelated things (they are both carbon, but...))
