Sewing lycra

Okay, I'm trying to sew a base for a fursuit head out of lycra / spandex because it's very stretchy and can wick away sweat.   I'm having a very frustrating problem where the sewing machine won't stitch on lycra.  Every other fabric it works fine.  I have tried ball point needles,  and I've tried stretch needles.  Every stitch is dropped.

The ONLY thing I have tried that has worked so far is putting a receipt in-between the foot and the fabric,  but this is impractical,  annoying,  and not useful for a zigzag stitch as it leaves crackly paper inside the stitch I can't get out.


Does anyone know how to sew through this kind of material properly?

You're on the right track with the receipt. Use wax paper or tissue paper, but sandwich the material between two layers of the paper. Should be able to just tear the paper out of the seam easier this way than sewing it between the layers. Also, you'll probably want to play around with the thread tension a bit to find what allows the right amount of stretch while holding solid.
