What's your nuclear apocalypse plan?
« on: November 12, 2011, 11:13:43 pm »
Inspired by the What's your zombie plan? thread.  Let's assume you have less than an hour's notice before the nuclear apocalypse.  Based on the probable impacts around your area (if any) where would you go?  If you survived, what would you do?

I've got to think about this...

Nuclear winter aside, we would all die know i would die form radiation. The North West it;self will be a target in it's own right, but the whole of China and Asia will be the primarty target in most scenarios. The jet stream will make sure we get out fill of the fallout.

Even in the event of a non-weorld ending nuclear war, I would still succomb to radiation quickly and my plan is the same regaurdless, spend my time with nature and people I care about.

I'd be sort of tempted to let myself go instantly with the bomb, if that's possible. (I don't know if it's always instant with nuclear-erk, scary...)

But I work at a cave >.< But I think the radiation might just...seep in... =|

If I survived...I'd try and get to the people who caused this dreadful war. =| and get mad at them.

I'd run around with my hair on fire, waving my arms in the air and making silly screaming sounds until I blindly slam into the side of a building, knocking myself out cold. :P

In the case of a nuclear apocalypse I would want to be right at ground zero of the detonation. I want to be able to look up, see the bomb and go "Oh lookit that."

A death by instantaneous vaporization at the speed of ligt? Much preferable to a slow agonizing existence in a nuclear wasteland and death from rad poisoning.

Whether or not anybody survives a nuclear war depends on a lot of factors. Some of which are:

1. Where you currently live. If you live near an industrial area, military base/town, large urban city, etc., then your chances of getting hit have increased versus that of living in a rural area. Key targets for any enemy to hit in a nuclear exchange are industrial/production centers, military bases, and/or large civillian urban population centers. If an enemy can take these areas out, then it prevents a nation from trying to rebuild their economic and political infrastructure. Key targets can include: Northwest United States where a lot of ICBM missile silos and other strategic military bases are located in states of Montana, Wyoming, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, etc., Any major industrial/production area along the West, South, or East coasts of the U.S. (Texas particuarly since a lot of oil and oil refineries are down there.), Major population centers such as New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Houston, Dallas, etc.

2. Quoted from Wikipedia:
Quote
The possibility of using nuclear weapons in war is usually divided into two subgroups, each with different effects and potentially fought with different types of nuclear armaments.

The first, a limited nuclear war (sometimes attack or exchange), refers to a small scale use of nuclear weapons by one or more parties. A "limited nuclear war" would consist of a limited exchange between two nuclear powers targeting each other's military facilities, either as an attempt to pre-emptively cripple the enemy's ability to attack as a defensive measure or as a prelude to an invasion by conventional forces as an offensive measure. This term would apply to any limited use of nuclear weapons, which may involve either military or civilian targets.

The second, a full-scale nuclear war, consists of large numbers of weapons used in an attack aimed at an entire country, including military, economic and civilian targets. Such an attack would almost certainly destroy the entire economic, social, and military infrastructure of the target nation, and would probably have a devastating effect on Earth's biosphere.

3. How prepared are you? What supplies do you have? Where will you go?

4. Depending on whether the nuclear exchange was limited or full scale, and depending on what the explosive yields were for the nuclear bombs and missiles, plus how much radiation fallout is in the atmosphere.

In a nuclear apocolypes, There are no winners. Only losers. Everybody is going to die regardless of whether you were near the epicenter of the explosion or whether you were far away and died slowly over a period of days, weeks, months from radiation poisoning/sickness. And if it's not those, then you'll still die from starvation, lack of supplies, or killed by other survivors/scavengers.

In a nuclear exchange between two or more superpowers, the only winning move is not to play. ;) You CAN'T win. All you'll end up doing is not only destroying your enemy, but also destroying yourself in the process.

P.S. - This whole thread reminds me of a movie I saw back in the 80's called "The Day After."
It was a very chilling and realistic look at the effects of nuclear war and survival. It can be viewed on YouTube.

Same exact plan as zombie plan, but with more traveling.

The Day After scared the hell out of a lot of people. I was only a kid when it aired and didn't hear about it until I got internet access.

Anyway my nuclear apocalypse plan is this: Hope I die quickly, preferably vaporized in the first blast. I can't imagine a nuclear wasteland would be a pleasant place to live in.

Actually niether would a zombie apocolypse for that matter. It wouldn't be like a video game. It would be an endless fight for survival in a world where many if not all of the people you care for are dead. It's fun to talk about, but I've never really understood why so many people are so gung-ho for it to happen. Living in a zombie ravaged world wouldn't be any more pleasant than living in a nuclear wasteland.
You humans need to refine, alter, corral codify and measure things yes? Very well. I shall use your wristwatch to count out ten of your seconds. I suggest you use that time to run. For at the end of it I shall come for you and I will catch you and we shall measure the duration of your death... In screams.

At least in a zombie wasteland, the food isn't irradiated. ;)

No, no irradiated food but you are always at risk of being devoured alive by hordes of rotting corpses. That wouldn't exactly be a pleasant way to die. I'm torn as to which would be the worse scenario. But either way you'd be seven shades of screwed. You're either living in an irradiated wasteland or a world overrun by living corpses who want only to rip you apart and devour you.
Niether is very promising but the zombie apocalypse tends to be more glorified. People seem to think that it'd be like a real life video game. It wouldn't. Society would have collapsed. You'd always have to be on the run. You'd have to scrounge for weapons, ammunition and food. You'd be competing against other survivors for resources and chances are good a lot of them would have no problem stripping you of your supplies and leaving you for dead. You may think that shooting zombies would be a blast, but the reality is In a video game, if you run out of ammunition and die you're just taken back to your last save point. In reality if you run out of ammo you're going to die a very painful and disgusting death. A zombie apocolypse is only fun in video games and movies. In reality it'd be a living hell.

Well, my city USED to be the manufacturing/steel capital of the continent, but there's barely any of that left. So I doubt that we'd get nuked as fast as places like Washington and NYC would. That would probably buy me some extra time to gather whatever survival gear I can and head for the hills, literally. Appalachian mountains aren't all that far away.

Lucky you. I'm right near Whiteman AFB, the one that operates the A-10s and the B-2's for the USAF. So we'd be definitely getting hit with a nice, fat, Russkie or Sino ICBM.

Oh damn. I just remembered that there's an Air Force Reserve/National Guard refueling unit at an airfield about an hour from where I am. It's minor at best compared to other military installations, as I think apart from their KC-135s, C-130s, and the like, they only operate a couple F-16s. But I dunno, when you have a nuclear arsenal like China or whatever, you might say "better safe than sorry".

None taken.

Frankly my hopes that I'd be immediately vaporized would be dashed. I live in a rural area in the tail end of nowhere. The nearest Wal Mart is a half hour away by car.  We'd be one of the last hit.

Yeah, but if things did go nuclear, I doubt the Chinese would waste most of their nukes on the US. Here's a fun fact that the history books don't really tell you; after the Sino-Soviet split in the late 1960's, the Russians had more of their nuclear arsenal pointed at China at any given time after the split during the Cold War than they ever had the US.

For those folks who think they can escape via vehicle either during or after a nuclear exchange, Good luck on that.  :P The very first thing a nuclear bomb does when it detonates is send out a very strong electromagnetic pulse which will fry any and all electrical/digital items rendering them completely useless........including the electrical components in vehicles. ;) The higher a nuclear detonation occurs in an atmosphere, the greater the range the EMP wave has in affecting electrical devices: Cars, clocks, tv's, computers.........nearly everything that is electrical/digital. If an enemy truly wanted to cripple the U.S., they wouldn't waste their time building nuclear bombs and blowing us up. Instead, they could wipe us out with EMP blasts to render all our electronics and digital stuff useless. Pretty scary thought considering how dependent the U.S. has become on technology lately over the last 10-20 years.

So everyone gets their asses kicked equally. China blows up Russia and us, we blow up China and Russia as they're blowing each other up, all while Russia blows up us and China. Now that's what I call reassuring, the knowledge that we all will go together when we go.

But then you run into another problem after a nuclear war: Gasoline will be in short supply..........or non-existant.
