Title: What are you reading right now?
Post by: Arbutus on November 30, 2008, 03:20:04 am
Like the "What are you listening to right now?" (http://forums.furtopia.org/index.php/topic,22533.0.html) thread, except hopefully slower and more contemplative so people have a chance to discuss their answers. :)

So! What are you reading? What books, textbooks, short stories, poetry collections, graphic novels, particularly fascinating articles, etc. do you have your nose buried in at the moment? If it's leisure reading, it'd be cool if you told us all why you sought these books out and how you're liking them so far. Feel free to have discussions, respond to other furs' posts, and make recommendations if there are books you think we'll really like. :)

Okay! Someone else go first!

(PS: "this thread" is not a correct answer :D)

White Line Fever - Lemmy Kilmister

Brilliant, funny, well written book by Motorhead's founder. Very good indeed, full of wonderful little bits you will remember forever, and a good tale of life in Rock n Roll.

Okay okay Seriously. I'm re-re-re-reading the few volumes of a manga called 'Yubisaki Milk Tea' that I have.

Re-reading Volume 1 of the in-print compilation of Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show web magazine. Really quite an impressive anthology.

Unfortunately, lately I haven't found anything that I consider interesting to read. Last thing I read was the "Rhapsody" trilogy set of fantasy novels. I forget the author, but those were really good books. That was.... 3-4 years ago. Also good is the Wayfarer Redemption series of fantasy novels by Sara Douglass. Those would have to be my favorite.

Other than that, their's the occassional Dog Fancy and Game Informer magazines, and my Dungeons and Dragons books.

Right now I'm re-reading The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ (http://scriptures.lds.org/en/bm/contents). ^.^

I've also been reading Ying Chang Competine's Revolution is not a Dinner Party (http://www.amazon.com/Revolution-Dinner-Party-Chang-Compestine/dp/0805082077/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228054333&sr=8-1), YA fiction about China's Cultural Revolution. And online I've been reading about Nova Scotia thanks to this silly website: http://www.pomegranatephone.com/ (http://www.pomegranatephone.com/)

Not to derail this entirely, but what is it about naming portable communications devices after foods? Blackberry, Chocolate, Pomegranate... I'm sure there are more.

Haha, I admit that I was totally taken in by that Pomegranate site until I got to the "Coffee Brewer" function. :D

Me? I haven't been reading as many books as I used to, mostly because I got a subscription to The Economist (http://www.economist.com/), which is the most amazing publication ever created by man (bar none!) but which also slaps me with ~100-150 pages of reading per week. But I'm trying to work through a few in my spare time:

-Ficciones, by Jorge Luis Borges. It's a collection of philosophical and surreal short stories that require a lot of thought to work your way through. The story I'm currently reading is about an infinite library in which every book contains a different random ordering of letters. Every book ever written is in there somewhere, but so is every slightly incorrect permutation of every book ever written, along with a whole lot of gibberish. All the information you could ever want is within its walls, but it's all totally useless, because with such a glut of information, who can know what's wrong and what's right?
-The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway. A classic I never got around to reading. I despised Hemingway's writing style in high school, but I've been trying to get into him again because I've noticed my own writing trending towards his "less is more" philosophy.
-Imagined Communities, by Benedict Anderson. I sort of stalled out on this book in August, but I fully intend to finish it soon. It's more or less the founding text of modern nationalism studies; it argues that the nations that people identify with, the nations people live and fight and die for, are nothing more than arbitrarily-defined communities held together by common consent.

Ooooh, that one sounds really interesting! I might take that up this coming break. :)

As for right now, due to my English class, I'm reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and it's pretty good, I'm not completely into absolute futuristic stories, but this one works very well! A few weeks ago I was reading The Alchemist and it proved to be an extremely amazing book.

Essentially, for those two books we've read and discussed in my English class, the meanings behind and inside of them relate to my life in so many different, odd, and intriguing ways that I couldn't believe this was truly happening. Call me crazy, but I honestly felt as though this were a sign showing me not really how to live my life, but what to look forward to in the future, and how far away it should be about. It helped answer a lot of personal questions. There were times in class where I thought I was in some sort of fantasy because the discussion and meanings could relate to my life so well!

Anyway, I'm also looking forward to re-reading Myst Reader. Which is a compilation of the three books based off of the game Myst.

"Black Light", by Stephen Hunter.  Its the sequel to "Point of Impact", the novel that the movie "Shooter" was based on.  I'm also reading Stephen King's "Cell" and Larry Niven's "Lucifer's Hammer"

I like post-apolyptic literature alot, provided its based in reality.  No zombie stories for me :P  I'm also a fan of good Sci-Fi.  if you want to recomend something to me, feel free.

The "Pomegranate (http://www.pomegranatephone.com)" is a spoof, created as a marketing device by the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It includes such must-have features as an electric razor and a coffeemaker. ^.^

I despised Hemingway's writing style in high school, but I've been trying to get into him again because I've noticed my own writing trending towards his "less is more" philosophy.

Less is more? I had a friend who called him "Run-On Sentence Hemingway." Of course, I haven't read him myself ...

Which helps explain why I'm now "recreationally" reading about Canadian culture and immigration procedures!

Yeah, I also don't know what you're talking about, Arbutus. Hemmingway is verbose as hell.

For my the class I'm in right now, we read 4-8 short stories a week. It's pretty grueling. Somehow, though, I've found the time to read for recreation. Right now it's "Pnin" by Vladimir Nabokov. What can I say it's about? A Russian professor living in America. There's no description that makes it sound interesting, but it really is.

Next on my list is "Venus in Furs." I've already read the graphic novel version =^_^=

Good choice, I like that one (liked the first one a bit more, though). I really need to get started on reading the third book of the Swagger series, I keep putting it off.

Right now I'm thumbing through Eleanor Roosevelt: A Personal and Public Life, looking for quotes to use in my essay on said book.

I'm reading a few books a the moment, firstly "Lost souls" by Neil White which is a crime novel, i'm almost finished it though, and i have finally managed to track down a copy of "The Architect of sleep" by Steven Boyett (£2 from ebay :D) so I've just started that, I should really wait until i finish one novel before starting another but i always seem to have two on the go at once  (:

I'm also reading a couple of non fiction books, firstly teach yourself UNIX which is a computing textbook, plus a few engineering textbooks i need for college.

Merle Haggard isn't it? Also a song on Motorheads first album of the same name, different song though. (I kinda expected a cover, tbh). And a film.

Life as a trucker is also part of another song I love, Born to Run.

Alright.  Here's the list:

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain.  I was supposed to have read them earlier this semester, but I got a bit behind (though I have read bits of each).  I've been reading several of his short stories as well, and, though they are very political, Twain's writing is hilarious (if you can read it, check out "The Story of the Good Little Boy").  All of his books are fantastic.

I'm also reading several articles about Twain for the same class.  I think I've read more things about his writing than what he actually wrote.   :o

The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.  Technically I've been reading this book for fun since last spring, but I lost it on a plane.  I recently bought it (again), and I'll read it over Christmas break.  It's extremely hard to understand, but I love Faulkner's convoluted use of language.  The story is depressing, but it really grips me; I can't wait to find out what happens.  :)

And that's basically what I'm reading.

Rock on! Faulkner is one of my favorite authors ever, and that's my favorite book by him. :) Good thing you lost the book the first time around, lol, because I feel like you need to read anything by Faulkner twice in order to get the most out of it; he likes just dropping you into the middle of incredibly complex and emotional situations in which nobody says anything straight out, and his writing style can be very hard to comprehend at first. So the first time around, you start out unsure how to even read the book and you're mystified as to who all these characters are and how they're related to each other and why they all hate everyone else, until some point close to the end where it all clicks and you're like whoa.

I have to agree.  Faulkner is awesome, but he left me confused.  Finally, I realized, "Wait... there's an appendix to the book.  I'll read that."  I read it, and I finally understood who everyone was.  That wasn't until I finished the first chapter, though, so I need to re-read Benjy's story (Faulkner even stated that he probably should have written the appendix for the first version of his book; he thought it would have prevented people from getting as lost as they did).

It might be a good thing I lost the book, then.  :)

I think I'll be reading John Steinbeck over the break; I've already read several of his books, and I might write my thesis on his work (though I'm still deciding).  I loved The Pastures of Heaven and Of Mice and Men, and I have several I want to read.  :)

Personally it has come to that time of year again when I once more embark on my favorite series, to be honest I must have read it 20 times (earlier books at least each book I have read one less time then the book before it) and so I have started in on the Drizzt Saga by R.A. Salvatore. I am currently on the book Sojourn, the last one in the Dark Elf Trilogy. This book is one of the first time I cried while reading.

At the moment I have just finished reading Alice in wonderland and have just started Through the Looking Glass.
It had popped into my head one day that I had never read any of the classics. So I've decided to go out and see what I'm missing. In fact I was thinking of reading one of Mark Twain's books next, though I've yet to decide which. In fact I'm not really sure what he wrote other than Huckleberry Finn. I'll have to look that up.

I forgot to respond to this. Yes, you're right, he does use short sentences and positive language. Verbose was the wrong word. What I don't like is how he goes on and on about the setting and little irrelevant details. But I know, I know, he wouldn't be considered great if the details really were irrelevant. I guess I like my fiction with a bit more glamor.

I actually liked "Lord of the Flies".  I hated reading it in class because we had an english teacher that had the mind set of "If it's not what I think, it's wrong", and that kinda screwed it up, but I still liked it.  It really delved into human emotion and instinct, though I don't believe that humanity is that far gone.  (yet)

Just started Let the Right One In. The movie was phenomenal, so naturally I had to check out the source material (that's usually how I go in these situations, I see the movie first and then read the book). Only a couple chapters in, but it's really good so far. A tad creepy, solid characters, an actual vampire (suck it Twilight!)... good stuff :)

That's what I did after I saw I am Legend; I just had to read the book, since the movie was so striking.

Also, full agreement from me on the Twilight rage. I've never read but a few excerpts of them, but my morbid curiosity got the better of me, and I tried reading a bit of it while out Christmas shopping today.

Saw it in Barnes and Noble and it looked interesting so I picked it up. It was a nice change to see Batman written in novel form, and it's fairly well done with POVs between Bruce, Joker and this arsonist, created by the author, named Enfer.

It's my favorite by him. I like it better than Cat's Cradle.

Now reading: Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
Also: Buddha, a graphic novel by Osamu Tezuka
I can read two at once only if one is a comic. Otherwise, no.

Kurt Vonnegut has neat ideas, but I think his characters are sorta flat. And sometimes it feels like he's trying to jam his ideas down your esophagus...but I still like him.

Actually, I'm really enjoying Venus in Furs. It's good in a different way than most "Great Books." The book is 90% the two main characters talking about their philosophies of love or acting them out. Sacher-Masoch doesn't write as smoothly and isn't as technically skilled as others, but there's a raw honesty in it that makes the characters come alive.
Just for comparison, I like it better than "Lady Chatterly's Lover," if you've read that one.

Im about halfway through the final book in the twilight. The series is AWESOME, as theres a good bit of romance in each novel, but at the same time a good chunk of action (usually at the end). It took me about 3 weeks to read the first 3 books, (im a fast reader) and it would have took me 2 but i had to wait a week to get the third one.

I tend to use "furry" sometimes as just a shorthand for "anthropomorphic." Sorry; I didn't mean anything pertaining to our fandom specifically, but rather I download a lot of texts involving anthropomorphized animals, mostly children's tales and fables.

Currently I'm reading "The Indigo King" It's the 3rd book in the "Imaginarium Geographica" series by James Owen.
Very good series IMO. It's a "young adult/teen" series but those are usually my favorite type of fantasy books.

First Book; "Here There Be Dragons" (http://www.amazon.com/There-Dragons-Chronicles-Imaginarium-Geographica/dp/1416912282/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233770056&sr=1-2)

Second Book; "The Search for the Red Dragon" (http://www.amazon.com/Search-Dragon-Chronicles-Imaginarium-Geographica/dp/1416948511/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233770056&sr=1-3)

Third Book, the one I'm reading; "The Indigo King" (http://www.amazon.com/Indigo-King-Chronicles-Imaginarium-Geographica/dp/1416951075/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233770056&sr=1-1)

Very good; I highly suggest if you like trips to Imaginary Worlds with Magic, dragons, talking animals and lots of hints and mentioning of actual myths and old stories check it out.

Just about done with "Fire and Ice" the second book in the Warriors series. My friend Joy has ALL the books so I'm borrowing them 2 or 3 at a time.

It's a good series so far(for those who like young reader fantasy books). The books are short, only around 300 pages each, so they're a quick read. There are six books in series one, 6 in series 2 and I think 5 in the 3rd series.
So I have a lot of reading to do.

I'm reading "Live from New York", a history of Saturday Night Live. I'm not a particularly big SNL fan (I generally prefer the earlier years), but it's interesting to see how it all works. The "story" is told almost entirely in quotes from people involved in the show (cast members, guest stars, NBC executives) so you get all these different perspectives.

Before this, I read "The Perfect American", a fictionalized novel about Walt Disney, told partly from the perspective of a fictitious disgruntled animator. It had some very interesting ideas, but some scenes were a little stilted (it was translated, and in this case, you could tell from the way it read).

"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Coleridge.

Gonna be writing a paper on it~ Which should be fun.

Yeah, that's a good poem. My husband loves it and quotes it whenever appropriate.

I just finished reading "Gilgamesh." I became interested when it was mentioned during my art history class last summer, and I had a chance to snag the book for free, so I did. It was great. I was a little afraid it would be like Beowulf, which I hated, but it was nothing like that at all. Much more human.

Slowly wading my way through Master and Commander, the first book in the Jack Aubrey series (I'm growing more and more in love with the movie, so naturally I had to check out the book series). I'm really liking it. It can be a bit tricky to read (it tries to be as authentic as possible, and that includes all the nautical slang in usage. It's not 'Clockwork-Orange-consult-a-nadsat-dictionary-every-few-lines', but it's still pretty rough), but I'm slowly getting used to all that and it's really sucking me in. I really can't wait to read more, actually, it's shaping up to be an awesome book.

Recently finished up A Year at the Movies: One Man's Filmgoing Odyssey by Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo from MST3K). It was an account of him seeing a movie in some kind of theater every day for the year of 2001, and it was very good. Funny, poignant, and with a lot of general observations on films, filmmaking, and filmgoing today. Definitely something I recommend to cinema fans out there.

Finished Sea Of Trolls by Nancy Farmer for what must be the 8th time after deciding to use it for my outside reading requirement in English, good book, good story, cool characters.

Now im reading Knife of Dreams by Robert Jordan, the eleventh book in the wheel of time series. Long, tedious for some people, but depth like you wouldn't believe. well written and laid out as well.

Just finished "Sirens of Titan", by Kurt Vonnegut.  Definitely one of my favorite books of all time now, at times hilarious, at others pretty depressing.

Also finished a non-fiction book called "Year Million", in which 14 scientists and cultural experts write essays about what life will be like in 1,000,000 A.D.  The full range of optimism to pessimism is expressed, but they all have interesting ideas.

I also recently listened to an audiobook called "Brave Men Run" which the author, Matthew Wayne Selznick released for free off iTunes.  Slightly cliched plot in which a nerdy teenager gets, or, rather, gets the courage to use, superpowers, but the book might be of interest to furries since his powers are explicitly feline.  Do humans acting animal-like count as furry or is it just the other way around?  I have no idea.

Also working my way through Scott Sigler's "Infected", which was released as a free podcast novel just like "Brave Men Run".  It's one of the most disgusting, bloody, gory, and just overall creepy things I've read/heard in a long time.  My only complaint is that there's an ad for the book's sequel, "Contagious" in the beginning of each episode which contains some rather large spoilers for "Infected".  I learned the hard way that you have to set each episode to start at 1:41 to skip the ads.

Just bought "Of Mice and Men", which I read a free preview of on Google Books and loved immediately.  It's really short, only about 100 pages, so I should be done by the end of the school day tomorrow.

That's probably enough books for now.

EDIT: How could I forget?  Yesterday I finished Oscar Wilde's "Picture of Dorian Gray".  Thank you, Wikisource (http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Picture_of_Dorian_Gray).

(PS: "this thread" is not a correct answer :D)

But that is *technically* the right answer.

At any rate, I'm reading "La pierre de Lumière. Paneb l'Ardent." which translates into -The Stone of Light. Paned the Ardent.-
Is a very nice tetralogy of another egyptian novel. Quite well written.
At the same time, I'm reading the third novel of the golden compass, called "The Amber Spyglass". The author is good but his originality not that much.
And I kinda am reading some theater scripts like "the king dies" and "A Streetcar Named Desire" which actually take just half an hour to read but I like reading them over and over. Both are excellent.

In my reading time I have been studying mythology; both online and off. Online I read various websites on mythology from various cultures. The best sites are mythology archives where you can get direct translations of entire ancient mythology texts, but truthfully a lot of the time I have to read whatever I happen to find.

Offline I'm reading Celtic Mythology by David Bellingham. I checked it out from the library. I also checked out and plan to read Norse Mythology A to Z by Kathleen N. Daly but I haven't started it yet.

Why? Well, one of my spirit guides said I should study mythology. I guess you could say it's a spiritual pursuit.

I just finished Waking Walt in one day. The premise of the book is that the urban legend about Walt Disney not actually dying, but instead being cryogenically frozen until a cure for his lung cancer could be found is true. The story is somewhat of a King Arthur-esque messianic return to save the company that he built that inept managing has allowed to slip into a pack of corporate wolves hungry for a piece of the Disney entertainment empire.

...I sound like I'm writing the inside of a book jacket. But it was a very good read, and one of the most unique thriller novels I've seen in a long time.

I just started a book of H.P. Lovecraft stories.

I cannot think of the deep sea without shuddering at the nameless things that may at this very moment be crawling and floundering on its slimy bed, worshipping their ancient stone idols and carving their own detestable likenesses on submarine obelisks of water-soaked granite. I dream of a day when they may rise above the billows to drag down in their reeking talons the remnants of puny, war-exhausted mankine-- of a day when the land shall sink, and the dark ocean floor shall ascend amidst universal pandemonium.

Seriously, how can you not love something this over-the-top? :D

So you gotta tell me, what'd you think of "The Stranger"?
I had mixed feelings when I read it. It was interesting on a basic plot-and-characters level but the whole existentialist philosophy, well, I guess I find it unconvincing.

So you gotta tell me, what'd you think of "The Stranger"?
I had mixed feelings when I read it. It was interesting on a basic plot-and-characters level but the whole existentialist philosophy, well, I guess I find it unconvincing.

You know, part of the reason I'm reading all this stuff is that I'm trying to figure out what I think of existentialism myself. There are passages in these books that I completely agree with, and other passages that just baffle me because they seem so illogical. Like, for example, the main idea in existentialism is that because there is no higher power, nothing in the world inherently "means" anything, and we must imbue them with our own meaning in order to live. Me, I find that intriguing, and even a little exciting, because it opens up so many possibilities and so many different ways of creating "meaning," of leading a life that actually matters to you instead of being confined to other people's ideas of what matters. But somehow, these philosophers manage to inject SO MUCH ANGST into it, lol. It's like, they ignore all the positive aspects of philosophical freedom, they're all just like "God is dead and objects have no essence only naked existence and God isn't handing me the meaning of life on a silver platter wah wah wah wah wah." SHUT UP, SARTRE.

This is especially bothering me in Nausea, where the whole premise is basically there's an author who gets all angsty because he comes to realize that nothing in the world has meaning beyond the fact of its own existence. I kind of want to slap him, lol. Stop complaining! Go create your own meaning! That's what life is all about!

I also think Meursault (the main dude in The Stranger) has serious social and moral problems that go well beyond any philosophical statement the author is trying to make. But that's just my take.
Title: Re: What are you reading right now?
Post by: Sskessa on June 07, 2009, 03:51:19 pm
Yeah, yeah, I think you just summed up perfectly what bothers me about existentialism.
If you didn't grow up believing in God, it loses a lot of its punch, I think.

Yeah... Tales from Watership Down is nowhere near as good as the original. It's not a fully-fledged sequel... actually, it reads more like a collection of fanfic stories. I'd say only read it if you like Watership Down as much as I do. ;)

I just finished the play No Exit by Sartre, and have moved on to The Flies. His plays are a lot better than Nausea was, I think (see above). I'm in kind of a drama mood right now, so I'm probably going to read Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf after this.

Pooka: WORD. :) Lovecraft is awesome! I admit that I only started reading him so I could mock his overblown writing style, but it turns out his stories are SO GOOD.

Xevelous: Have you read anything else by Ayn Rand except for Anthem? I'm curious to know what people think of her.

Well...her things, a lot like George Orwell's or the books of many other dystpoic writers of the day, are pretty inflated. However, at the time, they spoke about truths in the ruling systems that people honestly didn't want to hear. Anthom is my very favorite just because it is so absurd. But another really good read by her is Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Overall, what I can gather about her is that she writes to oppose the "do it not for yourself, but for your country" motto.

Hey what coincidence. I started "Lolita" today.
It just kills me that English is Nabokov's second (or third?) language. When will I be able to write like that???

Oh, I know. It makes me feel absolutely dreadful in comparison. But I have a theory. If I continue reading books as good as Lolita, my writing will improve.

Hopefully that will work x3

My thoughts on the angsty existentialist authours... If they've got so much time to actually write books on how nothing has any meaning other than its own exsistance, then they have too much free time on their hands.  Having to work hard to earn a living gives meaning to nearly everything.  At face value, I can understand some of the existential arguments, but I cant help but feel that the the arguments themselves are a product of an aristocratic society who never learned the value of things because they never had to strive to get them.

I would like to read some of these writings myself, but I think I'd only feel bitter towards the authors afterwards.

What does a meal mean when you're starving?  It could mean life itself :)   I actually think this would be an excelent topic for the debate club forum. What say you?

Well, I have not finished Lolita yet. I got distracted reading Diary of a Madman and other stories by he-who-is-quickly-becoming-my-favorite-author, Nicolai Gogol. Maybe I'll give Dead Souls another shot. Reading these two authors side-by-side, it's easy to see how Nabokov was influenced by Gogol. Both of their prose styles are loose, almost stream-of-conscious, but also very colorful. And both of them write totally whacked-out characters who fixate on the most trivial things.

A Clockwork Orange. Fascinating stuff...very different from the movie. It's no wonder Anthony Burgess, the author,  lamblasted the film--the book makes far more commentary on the human animal than Kubrick's version.

Oh man, I so wish I could discuss this with you, but alas I have not read it yet. It's been on my Books to Someday Get Around To shelf for like three years now. :( You're not the first person I've heard say that it's the best book in the English language, though. Nabokov said about Lolita that his point was not to affect hearts or even minds, but to produce in the reader a little sob at the base of the spine.
It's like the best music. It doesn't mean anything, it's...pure experience.

Wuthering Heights for the second time. I read it once about four years ago, but couldn't quite get the language. I'm finding out I didn't really read it, and that there are things that happened in the story that I missed completely. That's what you get when you read 18th century romance novels as an eighth grader. That was my first one, then I read Pride & Prejudice, and got about halfway through Sense & Sensibility. Then I discovered Twilight, and I zipped through all those books. I'm thinking of rereading Sense & Sensibility, and finishing it.

Wuthering Heights is an amazing book... it used to be one of my favorites, although I haven't read it in years so I'm not sure anymore. I was never able to get into Jane Austen, though.

But my friend did just get me Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies...
 :D :D :D
My brother just got me that book. Epic read! It's even better if you read the real one first. Austin is interesting, but some think her books are all basically the same story. I've seen the Pride and Prejudice movie like... too many times. Around 40 times total. I had to read the book, because movies always skip the most incredible parts of the book.
I remember when I read The Thorn Birds it was like that. The movies were alright, but the book was spectacular.

-The Eighties: America in the Age of Reagan by John Ehrman. I felt like I needed to know more about the Reagan years, so I went to the library and got out the most crazy conservative and the most crazy liberal book I could find about his tenure, and I am now reading them back to back. WHO WILL WIN??!?
-A Theory of the Leisure Class, by Thorstein Veblen. A classic economics book, so sarcastic that it borders on satire, which argues that education and the consumption of goods both basically evolved as ways for the upper class to show off about the fact that they didn't have to work.

Being another entry into the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy after Adams has died leaves me a bit nervous about it being able to live up to the rest of the series. But I'm liking what I'm reading so far. Seems a good style like what Adams had, and has already made me laugh a couple times. Good sign.

My father and his family practically worshipped Reagan.

The Human Brain by Richard Gilling and Robin Brightwell.
It's a pretty decent read, although it's considerably outdated (Published 1985). I also wish it would review more the anatomy of the brain, rather than focus on disabilities, diseases, or causes for dysfunction. :I

from "Pale Fire" by Vladimir Nabokov. This story...it's a fictional poem surrounded by the commentary of a fictional demented scholar, who I dare say disturbs me more than Humbert Humbert. Wait -- you haven't read "Lolita" yet? Put down whatever you're reading, IT SUCKS go read Lolita now.

Hah, yeah, I've been told that Pale Fire is a close second to Lolita, in terms of... what? Best books in the English language? Amazing twentieth-century literature? Nabokov being generically amazing? I don't remember, but then I wouldn't know anyway because I still haven't read Nabokov. I keep trying, but all these other books keep getting in the way. So much history and Russian lit and Faulkner to read! Kess there are too many books in the world what are we supposed to do with ourselves??

Myst: The Book of Atrus

Word. Oddly enough, I wasn't really a fan of the Myst games when they came out (too weirdly quiet and impenetrable for me at the time... I wonder what I'd think of them now), but I remember loving the books, especially the Book of Atrus. :)

I wasn't really a fan at first either. But that was only because I was too young to understand and solve the puzzles. But, now that I can understand puzzles, the games are a bit more enjoyable. Still, I couldn't really understand the storyline behind it until I started reading the books.

The Science of Discworld II: The Globe - Terry Pratchett

The novel isn't really a companion book to the Discworld series, sort of a... spin off? It's entertaining like a conversation you would have with a young-at-heart grandparent. Always getting sidetracked and comment on various things while telling a story that really tickles the humor out. I even tried reading it while cycling back to some avail! ;)

I just finished Third and Indiana, by Steve Lopez. It's a pretty chilling novel about a kid who gets caught up in the Philadelphia drug trade. The corner of Third and Indiana in North Philly is still a notorious open-air drug market... if you're bored, try looking it up on Google Street View, and marvel at the sheer number of young men hanging out on that block who clearly have no legitimate reason to be there.

The Book of the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe. An incredibly awesome scifi series set thousands of years in the future on a dying earth. And by dying I mean that the sun, giver of life, is being eaten away from the inside out by a black hole, placed there as punishment thousands of years before the series began for the sins of an ancient Earth-centered empire. The book series follows Severian of Nessus, a journeyman of the guild of torturers, through his wanderings around the ancient continent of South America, which is now home to a kind of Monarchy-like empire called The Commonwealth. Incredibly cool, dense and allusive. It is rather slow reading because of the denseness and the allusiveness of the prose, but it makes it all the more enjoyable in my opinion.

From what I did get through, it was a pretty fun story. At first I was a little bored because it seemed to center on tedious, mundane things. (Could've also been end of semester stress) It picked up a bit though, and has me quite hooked.  First experience with Kafka, so i'd say i'm impressed so far. I might pick it up over break from the town library, but i'm not sure. It may have to wait :(

It's an interesting story by far. Some intriguing social commentary and the story itself seems to pull you in fairly well in the first 2 chapters.

Man, I'm glad Kafka's making a good first impression on you so far. Dude is awesome. :D

Like I said, I haven't read Amerika yet, but my understanding is that it's his most light-hearted work, almost comedic in a few places. This is totally the opposite of most other things Kafka wrote. ;) If you're still in a Kafka mood after you finish Amerika (i.e. if you're not completely exhausted by his page-long paragraphs), you should pick up The Trial... it's surreal, claustrophobic, creepy, and creates its own field of dark logic in which anything can be twisted to make sense. I love it.

I'll admit I'm not a huge reader... But for Christmas my sister got me Andre Agassi's autobiography, Open. I had it done by New Year's. For those who don't know, Agassi was one of the best American tennis players ever. Turned pro at like 16 or 17 years old, retired in 2006 at age 36. One of the forced-child-prodigy types.

Anyhow, I loved it. I'll probably actually re-read this one years from now, which is unheard of for me.  And I don't even think you'd have to be all into tennis to enjoy it. He had such an interesting life regardless of interest in the sport itself.

Well... it's time for school again.  While I'm not reading all my books at once, I have a few I'm going through:

Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.  It's actually a play, and it's not quite as strange as some of his shows (one I read called Not I completely blew my mind).

The Situation and the Story by Vivian Gornick is a book that mostly talks about techniques for writing.  It's for my creative non-fiction writing class.  :)

I'll be reading a lot of nature-writing as well.  I'll post the ones I like once I'm reading them.  ^_^

I read City of Bones as well. Nah, it's young adult fiction. I mean I guess there's a bit of mystery, but it's just the same amount as any other book in that genre. It's modern day, but also mythological creatures like vampires and demons. I really liked it. I recommend it too!:)

It'd definitely be worth watching Godot.  I'll finish it by tomorrow morning, but it's being amazing.  If you do get a chance, take a look at Not I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otjKETciw2c); the video's not 100% accurate, but Beckett worked quite a bit with this actress on the video.  It's only about 12 minutes long, and you probably won't understand anything unless you're uber-awesome (which is possible).

Well... here's what I'm reading now (it'll pretty much change weekly):

Mother Courage and her Children by Bertolt Brecht
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
Beyond the Hundreth Meridian by Wallace Stegner

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. I recommend it highly, its a great fantasy story. Also, there are a couple of anthro animal characters. A dog and a cat, to be exact. Namely, Mogget the cat and The Disreputable Dog.

I'm reading a book called Going Postal by Mark Aimes, and he actually cites Kolyma Tales as a more realistic account of Soviet reality. I think maybe I'll read that one next.

Going Postal is a history and analysis of workplace and school shootings. Extremely interesting. I haven't read a book this fast in a long time.

I am now reading {i]American Psycho[/I] by Bret Easton Ellis. It's pretty graphic so far,and and the descriptions of the murders are described in extreme first person detail.

I am also reading Roadside Crosses by Jeffery Deaver.Which involves a detective who reads body language. The detective, Kathryn Dance, is tracking down a teen boy who is a murderer. The teen uses the Internet to track down his victims, and uses MMO skills to avoid detection.

Just finished Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass (heh) and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs.  Definitely must reads if you want to know about slavery in the US.

Here's what I'm reading now:

With Malice Towards None: A Life of Abraham Lincoln by Stephen B. Oates
MW by Osamu Tezuka (thanks for the suggestion, Sskessa).
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan.
Canaries on the Rim: Living Downwind in the West by Chip Ward.

That's a basic list.  I'm reading a lot of other things for research and other projects, but those are the most prominent at the moment. :)

Is that for a class? The first history class I ever took in college was History of the Old South, and we read those two. :)

That was actually one of the more amazing classes I took in college. Honestly, when I first started that class, I mostly wanted to hear about Southern political history and thought I would be kinda bored with the slavery thing, but the incredibly eye-opening books we read changed my mind about that real quick.

It is for a class about the Civil War and reconstruction.  I absolutely love the class, even if the professor is a bit melodramatic (his Boston accent helps me not to care, though ^_^).  We're going to read a pretty shocking book called This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War by Drew Gilpin Faust.  I think it's going to be disturbing, but I'm okay with that.

I can honestly say that most of my college classes have been amazing.  This is one of them that's further down on the scale, but even so it's awesome.  I've gotten very lucky with my professors. :)

I better really get reading, I have a pile of books to read.  :D

-Volume 2 and 3 of .Hack
-Volume 1 and 2 of D.N.Angel (read these before, but I borrowed them from a friend to read again  (: )
-The Perfect Couple by Brenda Novak (my grandmother thought I might like it, she is big on thrillers and murder mysteries)
-Have to finish the Tim Allen book I am in the middle of
-Plus I would like to dig into this book of Bernard Shaw plays I got a while back
-and I still have the Red Wall audio saved to my comp to listen to...

So...lot of stuff to read. And that barely scratches the surface of the books I have gotten but never get around to reading.  (:

I have to admit, I was really bored the first time I tried to read Lord of the Rings. They do walk around a lot. After I saw the movies, though, something clicked. It's not like other books where the focus is on the plot or the characters. Tolkien's books are about the world of Middle-Earth, first and foremost. He crafted that world down to the most minute details, making a history for each and every place. When I approached it from that angle I was able to enjoy the slow pace.

Anyway, what am I reading? Still reading Kolyma Tales at one or two stories a day.
Also this ridiculous manga about Japanese cuisine called Oishinbo. What to say about this series? I love it. I've never seen characters so passionate about food. And you get to learn about the disgusting things Japanese people eat! Like fish sperm!

I just finished The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: The Mysterious Howling. Honestly, this has to be the cutest book I've read in years. It takes the usual "children-raised-by-wolves-and-integrated-into-society" trope that's been around since Romulus and Remus and just presents it in such a humourous and tightly-constructed fashion that one can't help but fall in love with it. The illustrations are simply adorable, and it seems to be the first in a series that I greatly look forward to reading. Definitely recommended for furries who are fans of young adult/children's literature!

A little while ago, I discovered that I was in the middle of eight books at once and wasn't making progress on any of them. This was a problem, lol. So for the past two months or so, I've been focusing on finishing all those and haven't been able to start anything new.

Now, though, I'm down to being in the middle of only five books at once, so I figured I was within my rights to pick up another. ;) I'm now reading The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks. I've been meaning to read this for quite a while. It's a book of case histories of patients with strange neurological disorders, and it's moving and disturbing to think that the spectacular brain malfunctions in the book could happen to anyone at any time.

i just found out about a week ago that they're the same person! purely coincidental.

It was, but in the foreword the current author says the text got prohibitively large for a single volume, so they split it up into three.  If a book of THIS size is only a third of the material, then yeah, it was better to split it up.

Lolita

Amazing book.

I've just started reading His Master's Voice by Stanislav Lem. It's so good!!! It's a "first contact" story, as in first contact with extraterrestrial life, but grounded in a disturbing realism with juicy, fully fleshed out characters. There are no alien characters at all, rather, it's about human reactions to a message from another life form. It's told in first person, so it has a chance to become very philosophic and wandering, as well as getting into the meat of the main character, who is just fascinating. An idea-driven book, I'd say. High recommendation to sci-fi readers.

Wow, that sounds like good stuff Sskessa. I might look in to that.

Right now I'm reading comic books :D
Y: The Last Man is an amazing series.
As the title implies, it's about every male in the world dying from a mysterious plague except for one man (and his male monkey). It sounds a bit silly, and it does have its humorous moments, but it also looks realistically into what society might be like if it was thrown into chaos and controlled by women in an almost post-apocalyptic setting.
It's one of my favorites.

Yeah, the explanation did fall a bit short. But, then again, it's something that had been hyped up since the comic started, so I suppose it's not surprising for it to be a bit disappointing, eh? Besides, I think the adventure getting to the end makes up for the end itself.
But I still really enjoyed how the epilogue wrapped it up.

Just started reading the "Scott Pilgrim" comic series. I'm all excited for the movie!

When I first heard about a "Live Action Scott Pilgrim", I couldn't possibly imagine how they would try to make it realistic.  It looks like they didn't even bother, which means it'll be totally awesome!

That, and, if just LOOKING at Michael Cera makes me want to punch him in the face, he'll be the best Scott ever!

As I Lay Dying is one of my favorite Faulkner books too (though I liked The Sound and the Fury even better - absolutely mindblowing, that one). The last time I read it was about four or five years ago, and I've been meaning to return to it ever since.

Alex, this

The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven

is the greatest book title ever. :D

Right now I'm reading the "Indianas Drivers Manual" As I have to pass the test next week to switch my license over.  I also have to pay an outrageuos (in my opinion) amount to make this happen.  It beats walken though. Ive been driving for a long time, and the technical stuff is forgotten... how many feet from the railroad tracks are you supposed to stop when a train is crossing... how many seconds to stop at a stop sign etc...

The movie is pretty accurate for an adaptation. The real problem with the movie is that Fight Club is a work of fiction espousing a weird philosophy.

You don't really get to see and experience that philosophy in the movie, even though it is there some. You get to see it a lot more in the book, which is awesome.

Finally got around to reading Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. I've had it for ages and made it about a third of the way through when I got it, but then put it down until now for whatever reason. Excellent book, if one that got fairly surreal after a while (even by Adam's standards). I do think I prefer the sequel, The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, though. That one is funnier and has just the right level of coherency in its weirdness.

Yeah, isn't it? But I only got halfway through because the book was second-hand (or twenty-second-hand) and it just plain fell apart.

Right now I'm reading Through the Looking Glass. Before that I read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I love Alice. She's so crazy, yet so proper. I love the Disney movie, but I gotta say, it didn't capture her personality very well.

I have a strong interest in the field of High-Performance Computing, and since the fastest supercomputer in the world right now owes its petaFLOPS-range performance to the fact that it uses a combination of both CPU's and GPU's for it computations, I decided it would be wise of me to begin to learn more about how GPU's are used for these massively parallel computing tasks.

What do you think of Notes from the Underground?

That is one of my favorite books in the world. Dostoevsky's a master of psychology, and that book is purely Dostoevsky rooting around in one tortured guy's head. The main character acts despicably, but somehow I recognize myself in him. (I think we all do, either that or I'm just an awful person. :P)

Hmm...I'm pretty sure I'm an awful person, too, just in a different way, haha.

I ask about Notes from the Underground because I loved the book for 2/3, and then felt completely betrayed by the ending. Dostoevsky fleshed out the main character so well, so realistically, so nuanced and then....BAM in comes the Hooker with a Heart of Gold. That was my first experience with that trope so I didn't have a name for it. It made me really mad at the time. I hate it when an author uses a secondary character to teach the main character a Life Lesson, especially when the secondary character's problems are more numerous and serious than the main character's. And I mean come on. The girl has probably seen the Underground Man type of guy a hundred times, why is she suddenly getting all mushy over this Underground Man. The ending just broke the illusion for me, because of how unbelievable it was compared to the realism of earlier.

Yep, all glorious 3000 or so pages in three volumes [two or three of the original books per volume] (in the publication I have been able to get, yay for relatively small typeset ;) ).
So far, in the small amount i have been able to work through, it has been good reading. A little tedious reading at certain points, mostly due his rather long and drawn out narrative style (but then, so do I, when I write); it is also quite interesting to read his descriptions.

The October 1989 issue of Run magazine.

For those not familiar with Run, it was a computer magazine that promoted itself as "The Commodore 64/128 User's Guide."  I just picked up this issue, along with a lot of other old original Commodore and Amiga magazines, last weekend at the ECCC Commodore Convention (http://starbase.globalpc.net/eccc/).  These old computer magazines were absolutely great because they offered such amazing features as the source code for BASIC and assembly applications and games that you could type into your computer yourself, a column of "hints and tips for performing Commodore computing wizardry," reviews of new Commodore hardware and games being released, an overview of Commodore-related product announcements from the 1989 Summer Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, and an article on "Telecomputing."  Wunderbar!

Speaking of the magazine's program source code listings, this particular issue has the BASIC source code for a program that creates an animated Jack-o'-lantern on the Commodore 64.  How timely!  I will have to type it into my own C64, save it to a 5.25" floppy disk on my 1541 disk drive, and run it on a Commodore computer monitor placed in my window during this year's Halloween!   :)

"Patton, Montgomery, Rommel" by Terry Brighton. I love how it's sort of a mini-biography about each commander; not only is it a very nice read about their military histories, it goes into detail about their lives before either world war without becoming boring or less "readable".

This week I read "The First Book of Lapism" by Phil Geusz and "Smiley and the Hero" by Ryan Campbell.  They're both furry books -- the first is science-fiction exploring a future where people can choose to be genetically engineered into rabbits for religious reasons and the second is a re-imagining of Jack and the Beanstalk starring a plucky young rabbit who's up against a gigantic, bulletproof, gangster wolf.

Now I'm reading "Save the Day" by D.J. Fahl -- a furry superhero novel.  (Yes, I came back from Rainfurrest with a whole armload of furry books to read.  It's a lot of fun.)

I'm reading a novel called Aztec by Gary Jennings. Absolutely beautiful book. The story is a historical fiction, about the Mexica of South America, told from the point of view of an old Mexica man who lived during the last years of reign by the native people. He is being interviewed by Christian scribes for the interest of the Spanish king, and he describes what he learned about his world before and after the conquests began. The sexual, religious, and cultural themes are fantastic, and the depth of character is astonishing, as well as the imagery of the magnificent cities and lands of South America. I highly recommend it!!

I just started reading a non-fiction Natural History book called Serengeti Shall Not Die.  It was published in 1960 and is about the early days of the Serengeti National Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serengeti_National_Park) in what was then the British Colony of the Tanganyika Territory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanganyika_Territory).  The book was written by Michael and Dr. Bernhard Grzimek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernhard_Grzimek), who also made an Academy Award-winning documentary about the park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serengeti_Shall_Not_Die) by the same name.  Sadly, Michael Grzimek died while filming the documentary on location when a Griffon Vulture collided with the small Dornier Do 27 airplane that he used to film aerial footage from, causing the plane to crash.

While I haven't read a vintage Natural History book like this one in a few years now, I have a long-time love of them and I have half of a large book case filled with 85 of them.  I don't know what it is, but it seemed like the world of Natural History and Zoology was so much more adventurous and exciting during the "Johnny Quest" years of the 1960's than it is now, and some of the books make for fantastic reading.

I'm finishing up the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins....... For the second time! :D  I love that series. she is definitely one of my favorite author if not my favorite. She's the reason i started writing. :) If you haven't read it yet, Hunger Games is a great post-apocalyptic world in which a cruel Capitol rules mercilessly over Twelve Districts of separated people. the children (ages 10 through 18 i believe) are forced to fight to the death for entertainment. One boy and one girl from each district. I love this book!  :goldhowl:

Honestly, Collins doesn't have my favorite writing style, but I honestly felt it had a compelling story and realistic characters.  The dialog was kinda cheesy at times, but I forgave them :D

I'll be starting the second one tonight. I'm glad I borrowed them instead of buying though, as I don't think it's a series I'll ever reread unless the next two end up being amazingly good- that and I blew through the first book in just a few hours.

Yesterday I started reading the book, The Race for a New Game Machine: Creating the Chips Inside the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3 (http://www.amazon.com/The-Race-New-Game-Machine/dp/0806531010/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335172035&sr=8-1), by David Shippy and Mickie Phipps.

The book is a behind-the-scenes first-hand account of the work done by people from IBM, Sony, Toshiba, and Microsoft to design the special microprocessor chips that ended up powering both the Sony Playstation 3 and the XBox 360 and the grueling technical challenges and deadlines that they had to endure to make it happen, as written by two of the chip designers that actually worked on the project.  The book is supposed to be written in the same vein as another book that I recently read and really enjoyed, the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Soul of A New Machine (http://www.amazon.com/The-Soul-A-New-Machine/dp/0316491977/ref=pd_sim_b_3) by Tracy Kidder, and as a result I have very high hopes for it.

I finished Game of Thrones yesterday.  I'd heard that it was a brutal series, so I tried not to get overly attached to any of the characters.  It mostly worked.  (I'd put in the one exception, but I can't figure out how to create one of those hidden spoiler box thingies -- it was something in the first half of the book though.)

I recently read Communion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communion_%28book%29) by Whitley Strieber. The concept of extra terrestrial visitors has always intrigued me, in an innocent way. This book downright terrified me. Grey aliens coming in the night and rendering you completely helpless, taking you back to their ship where horrible experiments were to be conducted.

Bleck! Now I think it's time to read Bhagavad Gita again.

Having finished the last book that I was reading, The Race for a New Game Machine: Creating the Chips Inside the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3, by David Shippy and Mickie Phipps, a few days ago I started reading a new book that I recently got for my birthday called, 200 Meters & Down: The Story of Amateur Radio by Clinton B. DeSoto (http://www.arrl.org/shop/200-Meters-and-Down/).

200 Meters & Down was billed as being a detailed history of the beginnings of amateur radio, from its origin until about the mid-1930's.  Because of that, I mistakenly assumed that this was a recently-written book where the author only went that far through amateur radio's history due to his personal choice of when he felt that he should stop.  However, that is not the case.  The book stops detailing the history of amateur radio at around the time of the mid-1930's because it was actually written and first-published in 1936!  That was not what I had expected at all, and it almost threw me off from reading it since the author does make some assumptions that I would be at least somewhat familiar with what the everyday amateur radio scene was like during the time when the book was written.  However, as it turns out the author has a fairly pleasant writing style, so I was still able to become engaged with the book anyway.  I also love how wondrous the author makes long-range radio communication sound, as he makes statements about how radio's miraculous invisible waves travel through the aether out into the Milky Way, and cross "roaring oceans and trackless lands."  That kind of romantic view of the technology sounds kind of cheesy in this day and age, but then you have to remember the time period that this book was written in.  Back then the world truly was a much larger and more mysterious place, and if you wanted to travel to distant lands that were across the Atlantic you had to do it either by ship or by Zeppelin.  As a result, talking to people from around the world through a telegraph straight key, a home-built spark gap transmitter, a 100-feet of wire, and 100-Watts of power must have truly seemed almost miraculous back then!  In any case, I think that this book is going to turn out to be a pretty good read!

A Pearl in the Storm by Toni Murden McClure.  She's the first woman to row across the Atlantic solo, and she wrote an awesome book about it.  I'm only four chapters in, though.

I actually found a book worth reading!

Elie Wiesel's Night (version 2)

Elie is a holocaust survivor, and in this book he writes about his experience living in a death camp.
(Also won the Nobel Peace award for this book)

Well I'm finished with Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast Of Champions now. (That's an amazing book FYI)
It's got 302 pages, so to sum the story up, the book is about an under appreciated writer who gets discovered and invited to an arts festival, where a car salesman who is going mad ends up reading on of his books and it causes him to go into a violent frenzy.

It's quite interesting because there are two main characters rather than one, they're equally important, and for the whole of the book they don't know each other. Kurt Vonnegut's writing style is also quite different in contrast to any other writer, you should definitely check him out!

Now I has this book called A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah.

Ishmael was a child who was drafted into the army in Sierra Leone. I find this book quite intriguing, just like I did with Night.

I'm currently finishing the last book of the Mistborn trilogy "The Hero of Ages". I've got my shiny new copy of "Shadow of Night" that just came out, but I'm hearing mixed reviews on it so far. I'm tempted to put it off and buy a copy of the new Mistborn book "Alloy of Law" instead... But it takes places like, 200 years after the trilogy so all the characters will be different... Ugh, decisions, decisions!

The complete works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, who is one of my favorite poets at the moment. I could spend an hour on The Windhover alone.

Quote
The Windhover
Gerard Manley Hopkins

I caught this morning morning's minion, king-
dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate's heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, – the achieve of, the mastery of the thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermilion.

I found one of my bumper books of Lovecraft, so I'm not reading through that until I can get hold of a copy of the next Song of Ice and Fire book.

I'm currently on "Herbert West - Reanimator". One of my favourites :)

I've been reading the Dune series lately, and listening to the Battle of Corrin as well. I'm about halfway through the Butlerian Jihad- And by God, it is one of the best reads I've ever had so far. Personally I'm a bit of the fan of how the author(s), really paint the antagonists to be real... well, I can't say the word I'd like to say, so I'll settle with jerks, and leave it at that.

Finished Jon Krakaur's Into the Wild A few days ago. A good read, but I'll more than likely have to skim through it again. xD

Ohhh what a good book that is. I've never seen the movie, so I have no idea if it was as good, but the book is one of my favorites. :)

In the middle of a few different ones right now... alternating between the Bhagavad-gita As it Is as translated by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, The Science of Self-Realization by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Sure Ways to Self-Realization by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, and the Jewish Publication Society's 1985 translation of the Tanakh.

Enough to keep me fairly busy for quite a while... :)
