Killer Whale Revolt!
« on: July 28, 2004, 08:17:21 am »
Heh, I hear that a killer whale (--in Florida?) bopped his trainer around pretty good...the videos are impressive!  They say that the behavior may have been hormonally influenced.  I say that considering other incidents in diverse species, the rebellion has begun!   '<img'>

(The orca now has legal representation.  His sign reads, "Alleged killer whale." )

Uprising?  Nah.  Killer whales are highly intelligent and sociable creatures.  They just need to remind the simians every now and then that they let them ride around on their blowholes like that for the fish and friendship; not because they've been tamed.

And as long as the "trainer" had recovered within twenty-four hours, my support goes to the whale.

I saw this on the news last night. The whale was pushing the trainer around all over the pool. They said they believed the whale was becoming of age for breeding and was a little out of control. If I remember correctly, not much damage to the trainer. Just very spooked and in shock as he had been working with this particular Orca for 10 years.

Also, moving this to the appropriate topic.

I saw this on the news last night.  Wasn't in Florida.  It was down in San Antonio, Texas, at Sea World.  We've a couple of orcas down there they call Shamu.  He just went nuts, but from what I could tell from the footage, he wasn't really attacking his trainer because he never once opened his mouth to bit him.  He just was swimming round and round and top of him.  Knocking him under and such.  Didn't really seem hurtful to me, just an orca getting way to excited and playing roughly.  Trust the news to fluff things up like it was a true orca attack...

They have a lot of orca. They're all called Shamu. That's how Shamu can keep on putting on performances all day, everyday...
Oh, faint memory trickles, that is all; like a stream that rustles forgotten leaves and lost paths.

Shamu was the name of Sea World's first killer whale, who died in 1971.  All the current whales have their own individual names (Kasatka, Takara, Tuar, etc.), but are referred to as Shamu and company durring the performances, presumably because the "world famous whale" generates the largest source of income.
