Title: Second Life.
Post by: Diego Wolfwood on April 22, 2008, 04:20:59 am
I browsed a little bit and didn't notice any topics about it. I have been playing it lately, and was curious if any of you guys play it as well?

There are a few topics on second life already. Though no recent ones, the newest I could find are form 2006.
This link may help you a bit but I encourage others who use SL to feel free to comment here since all the other topics are really old and outdated.

I know there were a couple of more recent ones from last year that I posted in, but it's been quite some time since I've even seen them.  I'm kinda addicted to it, but I keep to my own projects for the most part and don't really get out and explore or meet new people.  But I am willing to help new people get started with a decent looking fur av so they don't have to mess with the embarassing defaults. :p

I use to be on there a lot, but I rarely venture on there these days.  My name on SL is Blue Paravane, if you happen to be on during one of my rare visits.

Is there any way to get an avatar without actually signing up to play the game? I think the avatars are interesting, but I have waaay too much stuff going on in my First Life to even think about a Second Life.

No, you have to sign up and get the money to get an av.  But no one makes you stay there.  what would you want it for?  You can't use them in other games.

I just got a new laptop today, so I can finally run SL at a smooth pace.  (:
So I'm going to try Second Life once again.

Could I ask for one of those fur avatars? I would greatly appreciate it.  :)

My SL name is Drasune Ninetails.

I was about to create a topic as the newest one I had seen was back in 2006. But you beat me to it.

I just started a couple days ago, and Narei was kind enough to purchase me a really nice husky avatar. I am still on the lookout for a saint bernard avatar, though, as that is what my second life character is supposed to be.

Anyway, my name is Valentyne Weisser. Go ahead and add me. I am glad to meet some new people. I find online games (or whatever SL is) are usually better when I get to play with someone else. I am online quite a bit.

Feel free to IM me about anything, I'm always willing to help with whatever.  If you have just joined SL then IM me and I will send you a few freebie AVs if you are still using the default AV.

Used to scoff at it for the seemingly horrible concept of entirely user generated content, uncontrolled chaos I figured. Now too dang hooked as I try (and somewhat fail) to build a massive spaceship. If ever you see a gynormous series of platforms above Vista or Gamma sandboxes, probably me walking in circles, trying to come up with the floor plan.

I'm on there as See Saintlouis, and I get on pretty frequently, especially in the summer. I have a ton of free furry avs I've collected on my travels, so if you need like, a collie or a kitten, find me and I'll see what I can hook ya up with ;)

Add me as a friend! I'm always looking for a good fun RP with someone. It gets boring just wandering sometimes.

I'm getting back into SL, so anyone who wants to can add me. I was kind of shy in SL back when I used to be on, so I didn't make many friends (it seems harder then you'd think it would be on the main grid) , it would be nice to get off to a new start, so as I said, feel free to add me, my name is: Razz Albion

Over the last three years, Second Life has been my main entertainment, income and source of stress.

I'm still there.

I build, I script, I manage land, though I am currently to broke to actually own any of my own.  Although, SL charged me $5 last month and I need to figure out how a free account gets charged $5. ;)

Second Life can be an interesting, annoying, intriguing place.  When you find the right place for you it can be great.

If anyone's interested in learning about SL or how to do just about anything in SL, drop me a line.

I'm usually hiding in the sky of a privately owned sim or working over with the people at Etopia, but feel free to IM at any time.

I am Itico, though there demands I have a last name so I chose Spectre.

Beer and Skittles to everyone who can have them.

Where can I find furry character models? I wanna make my character furry now.

I originally hated the idea of Second Life just cause I found nothing to do, but a friend convinced me to try starting up a new character and showed me some neat places to hang out.

Name is Roukan Bravin.

I know a good location for some decent for avatars too if anyone is interested just friend me and I can give you a teleport. I'm on every so often.

That's how it was for me too. Tried it, didn't know anyone and lost interest quickly, then tried again later for a friend and now on quite often. SL is just so massive that it's very easy to be over/underwhelmed when you first start up and not know much about it. Already having a friend on the inside makes it much easier to get aquainted and enjoy.

Many moons ago a furry friend talked me into signing up for SL, little did he know however that my home made comp box was the turtle of the internet.  I even had trouble loading up the instructional island.  That box has since been reborn into what I would call a computer so I could likely run SL should I ever need an outlet for my inability to sleep.

There is a furtopia group in there?  I wonder if there is a enough interest in the subject to create a poll to find out what furtopians really think of SL...

I had trouble with SL as I logged in on my only computer (which isn't great) and was greeted by a plaza style area literally full with people, this caused my great lag and I found it difficult to even learn the controls, is the entire game like that or is it just the starting area?

The starting area is usually pretty busy IIRC, which can drag down even good computers if you aren't careful. There's also a lot of clubs that are just as busy. You can usually find a place thats pretty slow, but I can't think of a decent place off hand where you could learn controls without getting razzed by others for looking clumsy. If you know someone that owns/rents land, or has some quiet place they like to visit, I found that's the best way to learn. Get with them and set up a time to be on together, then have them teleport you to them as soon as they can and get you off that help Island. At least that's what worked for me, since I learn better with one on one instruction.

BTW *looks at your sig* I may be interested in a new sig pic. Feel like making me one too? I can PM you a discription.

Let me know how much spam you get from those surveys. I've heard of people doing that, but seems like spam city.  So I just buy L$ via my checking account. Not to mention keeping up rent for a plot of land and club is a bit hard do by taking surveys and using camping chairs. :D

And PM sent about the sig (in case you don't have it set to email you of new ones)

I'm just there for the photography as I've probably said before.  And as some of you may know I take a lot of pictures on SL, mainly because my character is a very good model for taking pictures of, I also know a load of good photo opportunities and have a huge collection of poses ^_^
I jumped on the other night and took a few, unfortunatly I didn't check them as I took them and most of them didn't turn out very well at all, but meh.  I'll share one of the ok ones, mainly because of the t-shirt that the character is wearing ^.~
Picture (http://www.blastdav.furtopia.org/sl/5/Snapshot_008.jpg)

I will probably get fed up with SL as my computer is about as good at processing data as an aphrodisiac fueled chimp..... causing me great anger as I tap the 'W' key and find myself flying, in a completely different part of the world shown as nothing but a grey blob  :D :-[

Still, those custom furry avatars are really nice and even if I do give up SL I still want one want one  :D :)

If anyone ever gets bored enough, I'm Kuron Bock in SL. My fav SL past-time is to explore. The SL world is constantly changing all the time and it's really fun to revisit old landmarks that have been in my inven for over a year. I love taking pictures of my SL excursions and the good times I have with RL and SL friends.

I've always loved taking pictures in FFXI. Do you have your SL photos posted anywhere?

I visited SL earlier, but the impression I got was that it was largely a mall for 3d modelers to sell their wares. It seemed very commercial, and most of the content I was not even interested in. I wasn't there for very long, however.

I kind of want to find someplace where I can just explore and/or visit with friends, preferably without putting in constant micropayments. I wouldn't mind being able to create things as well, although I'm really not much of a graphic design / 3d modeling person and my PC has trouble rendering Second Life to begin with. I'm actually thinking of looking into MUCKs, although I keep thinking about whether or not Luskwood would be a good place to visit (as they're the most popular PG-rated furry sim, and they seem to have an enormous area with some kind of quest going on).

Anyone here use SL on Linux? My mate is debating swapping OS and we were wondering how well SL works on it. I seem to remember that a while back SL had limited support for Linux and while it did run, it didn't look near as good as on Windows. It's been a while since I read that though.

Of course I love Second Life! It is where I met Itico! Anyway, birthplace of my fursona, Cicero Kit (which Cicero is actually the name of one of my cats, whom I adopted when I was working on a lecture about the famous orator, and at the time, it seemed she embodied certain traits that earned her the name). I am a texture artist, and I have built avatars, though mainly sci-fi. I am not on as much these days. I used to work as a reporter for SLNN, which I would recommend as a good source of supplemental income for any writer. I took a break from SL to focus on some other projects. I will still login for the occasional game of En Garde. If anyone is looking for something to do on SL, IM me or Itico. We have several games and would be happy to meet you for a competition. We are working on a big project (it is doubling as my thesis/project for grad school) that should be a lot of fun--if you like trivia, you must get in contact with us ;)

Cool, thanky. She's on a laptop that isn't exactly top of the line and may not get very good framerates as it is (no net yet to even try it out on Windows). If that's the case, either it won't be much of a difference, or the slower performance will only be exagerated I guess.  Itico can IM me in game as well as Narei Fanshaw. No telling when I'll be on most of the time, but I do get IM's sent to e-mail and will be able to read it that way too.

Like a lot of things, it all depends.  The better Linux sees the hardware, the better it will do.

For instance, I run SL on Windows XP and in Ubuntu (8.04) Linux.  Same release candidate version on the same computer, dual boot configuration.  Because the Windows drivers are more robust, the experience is more smooth.

My older HP OmniBook XE3 laptop doesn't run SL much at all.  It may have 512M of memory, but only about 8M of that is used as video RAM, VRAM.  Cicero's runs SL significantly better.  Why?  It's a little faster and has 32M of VRAM.

Also, if the computer has a more compatible video chipset, it will do better.  Mine has an Intel set and therefore runs like a sleeping turtle.
Title: Re: Second Life.

I should mention that I run SL on a Mac (since Itico referred to this). However, SL crashed on me all the time until I added memory.

Post by: Narei Mooncatt on July 16, 2008, 09:44:48 pm
I've never used Linux, so thanks for the input. My old lappy ran XP with an ATI video chipset with 128MB Vram +128 shared (1.25 GB total), so it would slam the lid closed on my fingers if I tried to make it run anything more than lowest settings. I ordered my new gamming laptop specifically to run SL for a long time coming.

I started playing second life about two days ago, however, I really hate the default human avatar, and can't find anyplace for a furry one. If someone would please help me, my name there is Aleya Vaniva. Thank you, I'm just lost completely and don't really know what to do anymore.

My name on SL is Corbenik Vendetta.  ^_^  I have a semi-basic avi.  I've been wanting to make some Lindens (I think that's what the currency is called  >_> )  but I have no idea how.  ^_^;  I have heard of some ways but don't have the means to do so as I don't have much stuff...Or the required items for those methods...  I need to make some so I can get myself a more customized avatar.  Any ideas?  o.o

Reviving the official Second Life topic! Yurodivy and I joined the game, and she found us some nice furry avs but we're trying to figure out what there is to do here. ^.^;

Any family-friendly RPGs, hangouts, etc. that are also furry-friendly?

I recently rejoined on the MG as Foxxeh Steerpike.

I usually hang around Club Rainbow Tiger, though I have been known to just walk around and explore at times. ^^ Feel free to add me if you wanna hang out or whatever.

(To those curious, the area around my muzzle is blurred only because there was a ciggie there before. ^^' The image is otherwise clean, though. If a staff member still finds issue with it, I'll replace it.)

I can't think of any places specifically right now because I usually keep to my group of friends on there and don't explore much. I know that there are a ton of places you can visit, and you can choose to limit searches to PG content. I would expect you could find carnival type places, non-adult dance clubs, a friend showed me an urban exploring sim, ect. Just think of something you think you'd might like to do and search. Also keep in mind that some places may still be rated mature, but the people running the places actually keep everything PG. The Bare Rose clothing store is like that. Awesome place, but it's always busy and can really lag and kill your frame rates because of how much stuff they have there.

Hope that helps. :)

Been bored lately and pulled out my old account since I can actually sort of run it on my computer.

On SL under the name Adrius Borkotron though. My computer's due for an upgrade anyway lately, so I might price a new setup.

SL was an epic fail for me. Tried to DL the software but it was never able to instal on my machine. My PC was custom made for MMO Fantasy gaming too so I blow the minimum specs out of the water too.

That's odd. I have one computer that was built for stuff like this too and runs fine with no problems. I've also got one that SL informs me "Doesn't meet minimum specs" due to no dedicated vid card but still runs it.

I was just thinking about the Furtopia group on SL and realized I aint seen any activity in there in well over a year!

You guys that are new to SL, just search for the group "furtopia" and join up.  I didn't see a lot of the newer folks in the group roster, the more the merrier!
