Oklacon anyone?
« on: December 29, 2004, 09:09:54 pm »
I realize Oklahoma isn't usually very high on anyones vacation list, but has anyone been to Oklacon, or know anyone who has? I've been trying to find some info on what all goes on at it, and perhaps some peeps to give their opinions, but there's not alot of info out there (At least not that I can find), and the website's somewhat... lacking. *Plus I'm insanely shy, and I wanted to see i'f I'd like it or not  '' *
Thanks for any help anyone can give!

I've been to Oklacon both years. This year will be my third. It's held in Roman Nose State Park in Oklahoma and is mainly an outdoor con. The first year the full focus was on it being an outdoor con. There really weren't pannels, just lots of fun camping-type activities. Last year, however, we had actual panels. Oklacon is still a very outdoor-based con and will be as long as it continues to be held in the park. Lodging is free and in the form of A-frame cabins (summer camp style). I think it's very awesome.

The idea originated with a group of my friends and myself. However it wouldn't have become a reality if it weren't for a group of older furries who helped us with the logistics Of getting everything together. It is now a 401©(3) non-profit organization (as are most cons) and is in the hands of the older group for the most part and is doing wonderfully.

If there's anything else you want to know just reply and I'll do my best to answer whatever I can.

P.S. It's a very friendly con, and small enough that shy people will probably be more comfortable there than at larger cons. '<img'>

October 27-30 this year. And pre-reg isn't up yet but I believe the cost is around $25. I bought two upgraded memberships from charity auctions at the cons I've been to since last Oklacon, so I haven't really been paying attention to the cost. But it was like $20 last year so I'm sure it didn't go up much if at all.

I just checked again. The cost did go up a little. It's 26 for basic attending.

About how large are the groups that attend? And how many of the peeps that come are relatively young? I'm seventeen, not quite old enough to go through the "adult" areas.

What kind of panels did you have last year? Were there many fursuiters there? And how hot does it tend to get around the time? I live south? of the place. *I live in Oklahoma of all places and I don't like intense heat for long periods of time. Go figure!*

Well so far we've only had one thing that kids under 18 can't go to without a parent. And at least the first year I think half of my friends were under 18. The group is relatively small. I think there'll probably end up being like 200 furs or so. Maybe. The under 18 group I'm not so sure about.. but I promise you won't be left out of anything just cuz you're underaged.

Panels: Well I got to a body painting panel, a meditation pannel, um.. I don't remember what else I went to. I know a couple of them got canceled. I'll post again if I find my conbook.

Weather: It's Oklahoma. The weather changes all the time. But you should know that if you live there. It won't be hot, since it'll be Halloween. Last year it was pleasant and the year before it was freeeezing.

What part of OK are you from anyhow? I've lived all over the state myself.

I'm in Stillwater. Boring place if you don't partuculary like Football, which I don't. We've got OSU here, and everyone's obsessed with it, so I'm a bit out of luck.

Well, hopefully I'll get a chance to go, although it'll probably be next year. My parents don't like it so they won't take me..

You're actually slightly north and about half the state east of Watonga (where the park is). I have some friends who are in school in Stillwater at OSU. And yeah, it is pretty boring off campus. We had a good gaming group together so it was fun on campus. And Iron & Steel was a good shop to hang out in.

I still hope you can make it to the con though. It looks like it just got a bit harder for me too since I'm not sure where exactly in Texas I'll be or if I'll be living in the woods or not.

It looks like they're still getting it set up though. Registration isn't ready yet though. I know that much.

If I do go, it'll most more than likely be with my friend Hokey, who is turning 18 this april. At least I think I can go; don't you have to have a parent permission slip if you're under age?

*Smacks self* Hehe, I don't even know where I live! And saddly, I think Ivory and steel burned down. At least it was gutted by fire, but I don't think they've re-opened. Always wanted to go there and learn how to play D&D but I'm just to darned  shy!

I can't wait for Oklacon. It's going to be my first furry convention.
