SCIENCE
« on: April 22, 2017, 02:16:10 pm »
Today is Earth Day. Today is also when thousands of scientists and other supporters are protesting and marching in cities all over the world in support of science and how it helps the planet and humanity, even though some governments, opposition groups, etc. would like to think otherwise.

Is science beneficial? Is it good? Is it bad? What are everybody's thoughts about science, regardless of whatever type of science it is (Medical, Environmental, Engineering, Astronomy, etc., etc.).

IMO, we need science. We need to know and understand how things work and influence us, whether good or bad. Without science to help us understand our world and everything in it, then what are we supposed to do.......guess?

I'm an academic scientist. So... You can probably guess my stance.
Were I able to travel today, I would also have been marching in the London marches. But yeah. Without science, a lot of people would be dead or suffering. Silencing scientists is going to throw us back into the dark ages.

Do we really need to march to defend science? I'm pretty sure it's widely accepted as a necessary part of life these days unless you're in the middle east... and I don't see anyone protesting there.

Just because you don't see people marching and protesting about science in the Middle East doesn't necessarily mean it isn't needed there. Science affects EVERYBODY and EVERYTHING on this planet.........even in the Middle East.

Trump has been trying recently to silence and discredit scientists. So yeah, we still very much need to defend it.

At the  basic level science is simply the search for truth and knowledge.   Yet today these  noble pursuits have been co-opted by those who use science to impose an anti-human political and philological  ideology.    It not lost on me that science  has  develop way for us to live longer and better and also lead to eugenics and slaughter of millions.

Science is an absolute necessity in today's technological world. We need the scientific method and research in order to understand the natural world and its phenomena, as well as providing advances in technology. I'm also a scientist and science educator, so of course to someone like me, science is desperately needed in this world. At the very least, it helps us to challenge the status quo and consider our actions on the resources of our planet.

Lets look at a few things when it comes to science. Average life expectancy. Around 1950 the average life across the planet lasted 46 years compared to what is forecast in 2050, 74. Go back over 100 years and these numbers drop significantly.

Technology where to start? "We choose to go to the moon". Enough said with that one, and to think the earth use to be flat.

But here is the big thing... Define Science:
"the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment"

To argue we don't need it would be ignorant.

Science is the search of knowledge. We should not forget the scentist though.
The men and women who dedicate their lives in pursuit of knowlege. Most of
them believe they are helping mankind. Almost like a religion in the pursuit
that drives them night and day.

Tragically some good scientists are discredited either by a mistake, or by
some corporation who wants to hide the truth that could cost them millions.

With all the advances in technology today billions can be made or lost. At
the center is the men/women in the laboratory spending thousands of
hours testing and retesting ideas. They are dependant on the very people
who can destroy their reputation. Be it a multinational corporation or a
politician that was paid to discredit their work.

I was reading a book about the modification of food. Much research has been
done on genetic modification on corn, wheat, syobeans, tomatioes and others.
Millions of acres around the world has been planted with drought, insect, and
herbicide resistant plants. So much so that there are few if any unaffected
varieties left in the world. Wind, birds, and insects spread the pollen and
seeds of the genetically changed plants everywhere.

Little research has been done to see how these modifications affect the
natural world.. The honey bee is disappearing, Kids with allergies that
in the past were rare, and autisim is becomming more common.

Good science takes a lot of time to prove the safety of new products, but
big business only thinks about the bottom line. They claim they want to
eradicate hunger, but it's a lie. Farmers have to buy their seeds and pay a
royalty to sell the produce. If they try to use seed collected from the plants
that are grown, the corportaion sues them for patent theft as the corportation
owns the plant variety, even the pollen and seed it produces . Either here or
in a distant land, it makes no  difference.  So how can a poor farmer in a
third world country pay and still make a profit, many can't and have to give
up.

Hundreds of new chemicals are introduced into the environment each
year. Who can say how they will affect us in the future. In the not too
distant future I fear we will be reaping the dangers we are sowing.
People then won't have any choice but to live iwth it if they can.

The honey bee is disappearing.

Interesting you bring that up, We had a swarm on my wife's car not too long ago. We were advised not to touch the bees as they were now endangered and if we disrupted the swarm it would be an $800 fine. Almost as soon as the bee keeper took the queen off the car the swarm moved on.

Lately, the results of scientific analysis sometimes depends upon who is writing the check. There are quacks out there who have determined their benefactor's desire, then skew the results of a study to support that view. Like the alchemists of yore, claiming to turn base metal into gold for their royal sponsors.

This, and the overly heavy push on Professors to publish is why many pharmaceutical companies are only relying on in-house research instead of learning for that done by universities. Since this research can be expensive, it greatly drives up the cost of future drugs.

A lot of research is done in colleges. Big business often give money
they call grants to colleges if they will give them first dibs on the results
of the research.

Money drives all research into new products. It's sad, but it takes a lot
of money to work on new drugs, and other products.

During wartime the government provides the funds so often large advances
are made in science. Partly due to scientists working togather for the common
goal of winning a war. During peascetime they move to compitition which can
slow progress worrying about good old money and reputation. Human nature
affects us all including scenetists. Most have good intentions, but some wil do
anthing to win over their fellows. Accually I think a scentist works for their
beliefs more than for fame or money. But to get support for their work, they
have to have a good reputation in the scentific community.

In the years before WWII Einstein worked to convince FDR to build the Atomic
bomb. Tesla tried to convince them he could build a partical beam weapon that could cut warships in half, and other deadly weopons based on electricity.. The
scientiists at the time felt Teslas ideas were far fetched, so they went with
the bomb. It's likely Teslas knowlege of electricy was beyond others in the
field, or not, it's hard to say. It shows reputation means a lot among scentists.

It's also possible those pushing for the A bomb wanted to develop the tech
for their own benifit. Teslas weapons wouldn't have put the world at risk. It
wouldn't have made much difference as scientists around the world were
working to make a A bomb, or at least a radioactive chemical bomb.
