I'm considering being a furry
« on: May 31, 2015, 02:00:09 am »
Hello furries of Furtopia.

So, I've been considering being a furry for some time now, and I would like to learn about some things that I need to know in order to become a bipedal dog that likes to play video games and has an obsession with cheese. Of the sort, at least.

1. Telling people I'm a furry.

I love drawing. When there's absolutely nothing to do, I whip out my notebook and pencil and whisk myself to my world of wonder. I draw comics (and even wrote a book) about all the adventures my characters have. I am not one of those pro drawers that you see on DeviantArt; rather just an amateur comics guy that keeps doing his thing until his pencil breaks. And of course, there are anthropomorphic animals in some of them. My comics are a huge hit with my friends and classmates, and they enjoy the character appearances, their personalities, catchphrases ("we're screwed for life!"), and other things that put smiles on their faces which I barely notice myself. They treat my walking, talking animals like they're just another one of "those guys." And pretty soon, my pals will see them more and more times until finally, I admit the truth. The problem here is how I do it. I tell my friends, they look it up, they think it's weird, and they'll tease me. Not my cup of tea.
My own family might also be like them. I've heard that some people just tell their parents they're furry, and they'll walk away (or something like that). My dad will probably tell his pals that he's "worried" about my obsession with furries and that they definitely need to put me in sports or whatever. My mom will see all that "yiff" junk that adult furries do, and she'll ground me from the Internet for a month. My sister will think I'm a weird person, and that I need to "man up." My brother will ask me why I'm a furry, and he'll just say it's crap and he'll keep on telling me that it's a weird thing to be for a kid my age (I'm 14). We were actually bronies, but as time passed, he started to hate it. If he hates My Little Pony, so shall he hate the furry fandom (I think). So I don't have any good reasons to tell them, which is why I depend on you. I'm even more scared to ask my parents' permission if I can request someone to make a fursuit based off one of my characters (that is, if that will ever happen; I heard it gets real hot in there. Also, they're ridiculously expensive). Furry cons are family friendly (I hope), but I'll need to take a plane from Florida to Pennsylvania if I want to go to Anthrocon (that will probably never happen). So, expert furries, I hope you have some answers for, um, thing 1.

2. Requirements as a furry (how to be one).

From sources I've read, it is completely optional to have a fursuit in your repertoire, along with the accessories it uses, like, say, a neckerchief. But how can I become a furry? Do I have to make a bond with an animal I really like? Do I have to admit that I'm not a human anymore and that I have a spirit of an animal? I mean, humans are supposed to be greater in precedence than animals, according to the Bible (I'm a Christian, and I completely respect your beliefs) and I think that in the fandom, furries contradict that. Is that true at all?
Anyway, to also become a furry, I guess you need to develop characteristics for your furry character, called a fursona. In real life, I just walk around like I'm in a fursuit; a happy guy that wants hugs from kids and loves a good conversation. If fursuiters don't do that, then I must be totally wrong. LOL. Well, in my opinion, it is a definition of a fursona, with the missing link being a fursuit.
Artwork of furries are everywhere. Is it mandatory to admire the art to become a furry? I honestly think not; I just have to say all you need is a fursona, and that you feel your inner wolf. But if you are a fursuiter, and you don't have a fursona, then you aren't considered a furry (or so I've heard). That animal spirit thing suits fine with me, but I'm not entirely crazy about it. As I was saying, furry art may be an important reason someone is a furry, but I don't need to be all-for-it, am I right?

3. What I like about furries, and what I don't like (and what can be fixed).

Anthros are humanlike animals to begin with. They talk like humans, sometimes act like humans, and eat like humans. Consider them "man-animal hybrids." Yet the human version of the anthro, the furry, has a dark side beneath its quirky exterior. Why is there yiffing? It is completely wrong and is basically evil. They are taking sex to the extreme. Now the majority of furries do not yiff, but that is only by 70%. Yiffing is something that was made by humans, and ruins the whole furry fandom; which is why many people think furries are weird. As a furry, your main intention is to act human when you're actually an animal. But yiffing would not be something you do, right? It's absolutely criminal in my eyes. It would probably ruin relationships, and people would think twice about being friends with you. So I'm asking this to all the furries out there: PLEASE DO NOT DO SOMETHING THAT AN ANIMAL WOULD NOT, EXCEPT BEING HUMAN. Real-life anthros do not exist; you're just imitating what you would do as one. So be a normal furry, and do it right.
Furries have a bright side, fortunately, and many non-furries miss that. People just hop into a fursuit, go for a stroll in a park or mall, and have fun there. Around kids, furries are kid-friendly. I'm not saying they're not kid-friendly all the time, but it is something that I like. Dance with them, play games, and just pretend that you're like one of those anthros that kids have as plush toys. That is a core concept of the furry fandom, in my opinion. So if I run into a "g-rated" furry that does not have a bad history, that furry is welcome to my affairs.
You just need to remember: don't be completely animal; have a balance. It counts all the time.

I guess that's it. I'm sorry if it's a bit too wordy, but I hope I've given you enough information for you to compile. Also, I would appreciate it if you can give me reasons why I should become a furry. If they are persuasive enough, I may finalize my decision. So, TTYL, and thanks.

Hey :3, so I'm going to try to answer all/as much as I can of your questions:)
Point one: I get what you're on about since I haven't told anyone I'm a furry....yet. personally I think the best way to do it is to sit down and talk to your parents, explain what you like about the fandom, make them aware there is "that side" of it all but you're far from interested in it. Now onto Fursuits and cons, Fursuits are expensive. The best way would be to earn the money, that way your parents can't really object since its your money. But I don't really know how it works in your house but that usually works for me.

Point 2: You don't have to bond with animals, and I'm sure having a spiritual connection with an animal is called being a Therian, Some people on this forum are both Furry and Therian but whether you feel that connection with select animal is all down to you. You also don't have to admire the art in the fandom, if you fursuit without having a fursona wouldn't make you not a furry either. If you have any more questions on this let me know since I don't think I covered everything you said.

Point 3: I can see why you don't like yiff, I don't and I know not a majority of the fandom love it. But those people are furries as well and at the end of the day that's the artwork they enjoy to produce. But unfortunately its the main reason that sometimes people judge us and relates back to the reason I haven't told anyone yet.
Anymore questions let me know, hope I helped :) :3

Hey there, welcome to Furtopia.

1. You don't have to tell anyone. If you're worried about family and friends reacting to your drawings, you can just tell them that Disney inspires you and you like the animation style or something. Especially with your family, if you get the need to tell them but are worried, it might be better left until you move out and are not dependant on them any more. You don't -have- to tell anyone. None of my family knows, most of my friends don't know. They just think I like anthro animals without making the jump to furry. The ones that do don't care.

2. Going to throw in a few quotes here.

Quote
Do I have to make a bond with an animal I really like?
Nope.
Quote
Do I have to admit that I'm not a human anymore and that I have a spirit of an animal?
Oh definitely no. That's a whole other thing call being an Otherkin. While there are overlaps, not all furries are otherkin - the majority are not. I'm a human, I will always be a human, and I'm happy with that.
Quote
I mean, humans are supposed to be greater in precedence than animals, according to the Bible (I'm a Christian, and I completely respect your beliefs) and I think that in the fandom, furries contradict that. Is that true at all?
I'm a Buddhist, so I can't really help you with this one. But I know many Christian furries, so there is a line of argument that there is no contradiction. Hopefully, some of them will chime in here, but if not I can ask a few from offsite for their thoughts to help you with that.
Quote
Is it mandatory to admire the art to become a furry?
Art is a huge and varied thing. I don't like all furry art simply because it is furry - I actually dislike a huge amount because it isn't in a style I enjoy.

There are no set in stone requirements for being a furry. I know many that don't have fursonas, many that don't want to or even hate suiting. You don't have to go to conventions, you don't have to draw or write. Do you think you're a furry because you like even just one thing about anthro animals? Then you're a furry. It's not a club that you need a password for - If you think you are one, chances are that you are.

3. The adult side of the fandom is not something that we can discuss in any amount of detail on the open forums - We are a family friendly forum and I ask that people remember that if they reply to this point.

First question
Your going to have to let your parents be your parents. When it comes down to it, telling someone your a furry is your call. If your embarrassed about it then perhaps it's not a good idea. To tell or become something your embarrassed about. There is nothing wrong with being a furry. It comes down to self expression. But more on that in your second question. You said that both you and your brother were bronies. Bronies have a dark side too. Both in artwork and videos. This is true to all fandoms. But more on that later.

Requirements to being a furry.
There are none. Fursuits and furry regalia are individual choices. I've been to a few conventions now. Most members are in street cloths. The furry fandom is somewhat unique. Anthropomorphism is what attracts people into this fandom. Examples would be movies, cartoon and artwork. The idea of anthropomorphic beings, and not the creation themselves, is what's portrayed within the fandom.  This has created a fandom where the participants are fans of each other. Not the creations of a single or multiple people. You stated you were a brony. Bronies are fans of a single creation. As far as the artwork goes. Again up to the individual. I personally have no furry porn. And very few pieces of furry art. Mostly things drawn for me by friends.

I've talked one on one with quite a few furries about their fursonas. They picture themselves as heroes, participants in extraordinary events and larger than life personalities . Usually themselves if they where more than what they are now. The same can be said about the other 99% of humanity. We have all seen ourselves as being greater than what we are. The only difference is a furry sees themselves as looking or being something different than what they actually are. Having a fursona is also not a requirement.

As far as your trepidations of the furry fandom these facts should be noted. And I'll do my best to keep this family friendly.....
All artwork. All videos, wether cartoon, 3D or actual filmed are in effect, people. People reacting as people. Anthropomorphic means to imply human characteristics onto a non human object.  In layman's terms, If they aint acting like animals. They aint animals.

As far as people's relationships wile in fursuit. In truth people have been dressing up for this activity long before and threw out written history. This is nothing new. Fetishes are a fact of human existence. However unnecessary in a relationship. Consensual with set parameters  does not denote a fetish. Nor the use of a single item. You can try this experiment at home. Set both your hands palms up in front of you. Congratulations! You've proven me right. The truth is misconception and misinterpretation of actions have caused grief within the fandom. Consensual adult relations are an important part of the human race. Adult themes are a reminder of this importance. It's your choice, not a requirement, to indulge or reject these activities.

As far as animals are concerned. You are more likely to get blacklisted, or put yourself in physical danger, if you admit to abusing an animal within this fandom.

The number of bright sides to this fandom far outweigh the number of dark. Real or perceived. The amount of artists, performers, writers and musicians within this fandom in unparalleled.

1. Telling people I'm a furry.
I admit the truth. The problem here is how I do it. I tell my friends, they look it up, they think it's weird, and they'll tease me. Not my cup of tea.

So I don't have any good reasons to tell them. I'm even more scared to ask my parents' permission if I can request someone to make a fursuit based off one of my characters (that is, if that will ever happen; I heard it gets real hot in there. Also, they're ridiculously expensive).

2. Requirements as a furry (how to be one).
-1) Do I have to make a bond with an animal I really like?
-2) Do I have to admit that I'm not a human anymore and that I have a spirit of an animal?
-3) I mean, humans are supposed to be greater in precedence than animals, according to the Bible (I'm a Christian, and I completely respect your beliefs) and I think that in the fandom, furries contradict that. Is that true at all?
-4) I guess you need to develop characteristics for your furry character, called a fursona. it is a definition of a fursona, with the missing link being a fursuit.
-5) Is it mandatory to admire the art to become a furry?  I just have to say all you need is a fursona
-6) But if you are a fursuiter, and you don't have a fursona, then you aren't considered a furry (or so I've heard)

as for the adult side of the fandom all of the stuff you see/hear of is made by humans

if you dont feel comfortable telling them then dont do it. tho of course just telling one person can help you in the future to be more open about it and when you are put in a situation where someone finds out you can act normal about it like it doesnt really matter

as for the fursuit if you want one i would suggest you wait a few years. since you are 14 you are still growing and alot of money is going to be put to waste if you buy one now, and have to buy a new one once you grow out of it. if its too hot for you, many fursuiters wear coolant vest, some even have a fan in the back of the head.

-1) nope
-2) nope, there is a different group like that. furries are just fans of anthros
-3) pretty much every fursona/furry character out there is a sentient creature, so they are pretty much humans just in a different body. for example "my fursona"/me, i consider "him" as me because we are exactly the same besides how we look, same personality, same mind set, same memories, its just me with a different body structure. im atheist but if humans are considered superior then im pretty sure that would apply to furries as well.
-4) you dont need a fursona to be a furry. also a fursuit is just a way to represent your fursona, now required to have a complete fursona
-5) nope, you can hate all of the artwork out there and still be a furry. like i said before only requirements are liking anthros and considering your self one.
-6)read line #4

well yiff can refer to 2 things, the adult artwork, or just simply translated to the word sex (when used as a verb). i would also advise not putting it in such a negative sounding tone, since i know a few very friendly people, who are completely into that type of stuff. saying that its the dark side and is wrong and evil, sounds kinda like you are directly insulting them, saying that you disagree with it is a different thing (which people can actually respect unlike insults)

"your main intention is to act human when you're actually an animal"
it depends on if you consider anthros animals, they are sentient, pretty much humans but have feature from animals. if all of the sudden i became "my fursona" and i wasnt considered a human, or at least a sentient creature, i would be pretty upset.... if anthros existed and were labeled as animals, and people wouldnt change that there most likely will be riots and that type of stuff.

"So be a normal furry, and do it right."
the definition of being a furry isnt that strict so there isnt really any right or wrong way to be a furry. like anthros and label your self as a furry, then your a furry.

Deep breaths now; relax.

I know you're at an age where identity is a really huge deal, but I think you might be making mountains out of molehills. If you're uncomfortable with the connotations of a label like "furry," then you don't have to use it. You can just tell your friends you were inspired by Disney and they wouldn't bat an eyelash.

As for the prerequisites for entry into the fandom, there's really only one: Hanging around other furries online. There's really no exact definition for it because the scope is so broad and nearly anyone can fit in. You're a furry if you say you are, else you're not. Simple. There's no rules, really!

A fursona isn't strictly required but it's typical to have one. They're just a fun way to represent your personality and interests in some way, most of the time.

Within the fandom there are several subgroups people may fall under:
  • Roleplayers
  • Writers
  • Musicians
  • Artists
  • Fursuiters
  • Otherkin / Spiritual
  • ...And yes, there are those who enjoy "adult" themes.

As you can see the fandom is quite diverse, and if you ask one person what it means to be furry you will get very different answers from each person! There's nothing inherently religious about it, though otherkin certainly qualify. There's also a sizable amount of Christian furs who protest sexual themes in the art, which I understand is a historically contentious subject among furs.

To summarize, you don't have to be anything you don't want to be, furry is whatever it means to you. Kids your age can be capricious and judgmental so you're right to be a little cautious, but it's not like your involvement in the fandom is a difficult secret to keep should you choose to keep it so.

Hi Piper! Ooh, I also enjoy cheese and video games!

I agree with the other fine furry/feathered posters in their replies, but let me chime in...:) If you don't mind :)

1. Telling people I'm a furry.

I, for one, think it's fantastic you're an artist and you express yourself in such a unique way! It really doesn't matter if your characters are furries or humans or what have you--they are your creations and part of your inner world. Being a furry is one way you express yourself. There is nothing wrong with that.

Let me repeat that last part.

Being a furry is one way you express yourself. There is nothing wrong with that.

Your friends and family may balk at the idea, but ultimately, being furry is your way of relating to the world. It's you. Own it. Be you shamelessly. You don't need to yell "I'm a furry!" from the rooftops to be comfortable in your own skin (fur, feathers, scales, etc)...but at the same time, you needn't keep part of who you are a secret, especially when it comes to artistic expression. Your friends have already seen your work, you don't need to attach a label to yourself for them to accept you...they already like you for you. You don't need to run around saying you're a furry when it's abundantly clear you are one.

Which leads nicely into...

2. Requirements as a furry (how to be one).

There is no one set way to be a furry. Kind of like when Yoda said, "Try? There is no try. Do, you must." You either are a furry, or you aren't. Really, the only "requirement," or binding force, I suppose, that links all furries, is the fact that you like anthropomorphic animal characters. There are light and dark sides to this force...as photalysis put it...and there are many ways to show you are a furry.

A fursuit is not necessary to be a part of the fandom at all. Nor is a spiritual bond with a specific animal--as Loc mentioned in a prior post, that leans toward Therianthropy/Otherkinism, not furries in general. A furry can be from any religion; there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to that.

As for

This is not the place to discuss this topic in greater detail, as you have mentioned here. We do have an adult (18+) forum where some of these things can be discussed.

In all...welcome to the furry fold!  (: I hope you enjoy this forum and being yourself!  :D

Hai Piper. Welcome to the Furtopia forums AND the furry fandom in general. I have been a furry for two years now, and now that you brought this topic up, I'd like to share with you some information about the fandom that, like you said, you need to know. So, here we go!

Quote
1. Telling people I'm a furry.

It's nice how you like to draw. I made up my fursona by drawing me, except replacing a human head with a wolf's. Then I thought: "Hey, if that character is basically me, then why can't I be like him?", and the rest is history. I bet you're better than me at drawing... :)
Anyway, let's get to the point here.

Quote
I tell my friends, they look it up, they think it's weird, and they'll tease me. Not my cup of tea.

Honestly, you don't have to tell anyone that you are a furry. If you just keep your furry lifestyle a secret, you are considered a "closet furry". If you are scared of telling, then just show through your artwork that you are a furry. You don't necessarily need a fursuit, especially at an age where you are still growing. Sure, maybe some people will make fun of you, but tell them it's a hobby you enjoy doing and that they really don't have anything to do with it.

Quote
My own family might also be like them.

As for your family, if you ever own something big like a fursuit, parents can do one of two things. One, they can criticize you, and two, they think like you are having fun and let you run along. You can just ask them a few questions like "do you like the Disney version of Robin Hood?" without them knowing that you are a furry. However, they see a big box on the front door, they know you did it. So, just do stuff in secret if you are not comfy with what others think of you.

Quote
2. Requirements as a furry (how to be one).

From sources I've read, it is completely optional to have a fursuit in your repertoire, along with the accessories it uses, like, say, a neckerchief.

Yes, it is completely optional to have a fursuit. Because one, they are pretty expensive (an average price is like $1000), two, they toast you up inside, and three, you're still growing, and you'll grow out of it in no time. You can have some minor accessories, like ears and a tail. Fursuiting is real fun, especially when you're around kids. Those heartwarming moments. :)

Just a side note if you get a fursuit and you have stage fright: you have a mask on. No need for panic.

Quote
But how can I become a furry?

Simply by loving anthropomorphic animals.

Quote
Do I have to make a bond with an animal I really like?

Nuh-uh.

Quote
Do I have to admit that I'm not a human anymore and that I have a spirit of an animal?

Nope. Those that choose yes are called otherkin.

Quote
I mean, humans are supposed to be greater in precedence than animals, according to the Bible (I'm a Christian, and I completely respect your beliefs) and I think that in the fandom, furries contradict that. Is that true at all?

The fandom has nothing to do with the Bible. Furries don't contradict the Bible or its sayings; the fandom is not a religion at all. These are just people that have imaginations about anthro animals.

Quote
Anyway, to also become a furry, I guess you need to develop characteristics for your furry character, called a fursona.

You can if you want. It's the key to becoming a successful fursuiter.

Quote
Artwork of furries are everywhere. Is it mandatory to admire the art to become a furry?

Nope.

Quote
3. What I like about furries, and what I don't like (and what can be fixed).

I am just as unsatisfied about "you-know-what" as you. Unfortunately, it is accepted into the fandom. Some people like it, some people don't. Considering this is a family friendly forum, I suggest going to the adults forum to talk further about this.

Quote
Furries have a bright side, fortunately, and many non-furries miss that.

True, very true. Kids are suckers for anthro animals come to life, like Mickey Mouse at Disney World or something. Furmeets are popular too. Arrange a furmeet with some other furry friends, and go to any place and chill.

Quote
So if I run into a "g-rated" furry that does not have a bad history, that furry is welcome to my affairs.

Okay, count me in! :)

I hope you do consider being a furry. At cons, it's an unforgettable experience. Fursuiters treat you like they've known you for years. With kids, you will get nothing but hugs and lots of attention. Don't make them think you're some weirdo in a suit. :P

Welp, that's all for now. Don't worry: be furry. HOOOWWWWLLLLLL!!!!
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, down, down-right = EPIC SHORYUKEN OF DOOOOOOOOM!

I would say the primary test is do you like animals? If you do and like the art and stories
about furries, you really are one by default. You don't have to wear a fursuit, tail or a
collar to be a furry. You don't need to wear a T-shirt saying or showing it. I just like the art
and stories myself. I enjoy having a bit of fun with it along with my artwork. I used to roleplay
animal antho characters online which was fun.

The main thing is don't get in a hurry. There is plenty of time to figure out what you like about
the fandom, or not like. Also once your an adult you can make your own decisions about it.  Also
some people loose interest in the fandom later in life. If and when you get married your priorities
will likely change.

Like any hobby that has a social base, you may find many good friends online. Use care though,
like any group there are always those who will take advantage of someone. There isn't any
reason to tell others that you like the fandom. It's a hobby. Everyone likes different things.
if someone likes your art and animals they might like the fandom too. Using Disney is always
a good excuse to say why you like to draw anthro animals.

Wait till you quit growing physically before investing in a fursuit. They are expensive and out
growing one wouldn't be any fun.

Just have fun with it, like we all try to do. :orbunny:
