Title: Conventions for Dummies
Post by: Rimpala on September 28, 2005, 11:01:49 pm
Ok... so what would I expect to find if I went to my first fur convention..? I figure it's best to know ahead of time so nothing would catch me off guard... And I need to know what to do and what not to do. Is there music?  :)

Allow me to join you Rimpala!  I've never been to a con either, but I would really like to know what to expect.  Any things to watch out for?  Good things to look for?

I'm with you guys--my first furry con will be Midwest Fur Fest coming up in November.  I'm definitely looking forward to it!

As far as music, there's usually a dance or two that happens Friday or Saturday night from what I've been told.  That's where I plan to be--if there's a dance and/or rave, I'm there!

There are usually dances every night, at least at the big conventions, if you're into that.

But most general advice I can give you is to try to go with someone you know - or at least sort-of know, or at least have talked to online on a few occasions.  Being in such a radically different environment with so many unfamiliar people can be a bit stressful if you're not extremely intrinsically outgoing.  (Also, you'll want a roommate to defray lodging costs.)

Other than that, just be ready for the change.  For a few days, furry becomes completely normal, and the "mundane" world bizarre and outlandish.  It's awesome.  :)

I don't know about MFF or other cons, but Anthrocon holds a panel for those who are first time con-goers. There's not that much to stress about, really.
