C-ACE?
« on: January 26, 2006, 11:29:25 pm »
I don't have any real specific questions, but I'm just curious as to if anybody here has gone, and what it's like.  Myself and a friend are looking at possibly attending (and getting tables) if the finances will work out.  Neither of us have been there before though, so we're not quite sure what to expect.  Our only convention experience has been getting a table at Motor City Comic Con back in October, and obviously C-ACE isn't quite along the same vein.

So, anybody have anything to say about it?

Usedto attend it from the start.. Unfortunatly I am not attending this year due to the way the con was ran last year and the problems that the dealers had.

What kinds of problems were there?  In doing some poking around, it sounds like people had a problem with the layout of the dealer's room, but I can't find any gripes beyond that.  If there is anything beyond that, it'd be good to know seeing as myself and my two friends that might be going are all looking at getting tables.

The lack of water tables in the dealers room, as well as garbage pails was a bit of an annoyance to the dealers, I know there was not much space in the dealers room, but for a few artists, leaving your table to get water from the hallway is not always the best thing. The art Show setup to me was not the greatest, iThey had no signs up showing where it was, and it was only a corner of the regestration room having to go behind the regestration table to get into it.  The Games room and the con suite room. I felt as a guest, I had the right to use the rooms as they were deemed marked, get a snack at the con suite, play a few games in the game room. But being removed form said rooms due to LARP's really did not impress me much. The Print shop was a great idea posticon and very useful, but i found the prices a little high, but thats convienience for you. Some of the volinteers were not the most friendlest bunch, when asking questions about events or needing to locate an item for a dealer, such as tape or scissors. Also being stopped numerous of times to show voulinteers my con badge on the last day (which was in plain sight) kinda got irritating, expecially when runnig to get stuff for a customer. I know you were trying to make sure no one was there that should no be, but getting called over and having your badge hand inspected was not really plesing.. expecially more then once..

It seemed to me, the con was a bit laxed in prep, the dealers map was not out till about a couple days before the con, and when asked about it, i was told the layout was not started, and may not be done till the day of the con, Also when pre-regestering, i was confirmed the con entrance was paid for, then 2 weeks later my art table was confirmed, then a week later my art pannel was confirmed.. why the delay in the conformations on the last 2, I thought the confirmations would come all at once, not 2 -3 weeks after the Con regestrations. Also the confusion on the Dealers package, It was said that you were updating the progress on the site, but as a dealer, i would of liked e-mails on the progress. I don't always have time to pop on the site to check eveything out, especially when it came to how we are to claim taxes, and the forms we needed to apply for.

Other complaints were the dance, it was not impressive for the first 2 hours havng a key board player playing gameshow music and other tunes while the Staff DJ tried getting his MP3 player up and running.

A major issue it the Con is not an ANTHRO convention, and moved towards the anime con groups. There for Sales rally were low, many artists only sold 1-5 pieces, not covering the costs of the con. many of the artist are not returning and will be Attending Anthrofest in Montreal instead. A con geared to the Furry community.

of curse there websites feed back section had many more problems and praises... best to check it out

ohh and another note.. C-ACE does not allow adult content art to be sold, nor present on the con floor, another reason Anthrofest was created

Heh, not allowing adult art isn't a problem in my case (or the cases of either of my friends who are thinking of going) because I don't draw it.

I'll check out the feedback section you mentioned.  Most of what you mentioned wouldn't be too huge a problem for me and my friends, I think.  It wouldn't be too difficult to bring our own water supply and a bag for garbage.  My friends and I only have experience with Motor City Comic Con, and even with the complaints some of what you mentioned about C-ACE is an improvement over being a no-name artist at a comic convention (not that MCCC was bad by any means, just you tend to get overshadowed by the retail booths and Big Name Artists).

Thanks very much for the info '<img'>  I'll be passing everything you said along to my friends.  We're still leaning toward going, just to give it a try once.

I've been going to C-ACE as a Dealer for...3 years now? My fourth is coming up once I register for this year. Honestly, I found no problems aside from it being cramped last year. I don't know what the complaint was about sales. I did my usual amount, maybe a little more. I don't go entirely for the profit mind you and neither do I really care if its furry based or art based. Its Canadian Art and Cartooning Expo so I'm guessing thats furry, anime, fantasy, etc and so on. And I'm kinda pleased that there is no adult work being shown on floor and slightly miffed that some aren't showing up because of that reason. But thats another seperate rant.

I like some of the panels they have. Very informative. I keep missing the weapons one. And the chocolate social. If you love chocolate, its a definate thing to go to!

Yes, it was a little cramped and the art show setup was a little odd. Didn't notice the water issue or the garbage pail issue either. But I really enjoy C-ACE otherwise and its been a great experience so far for me.

Usually I'm there, along with Forrestwolf and Kina. This year, I know all three of us are going and Lonestar might make an apperance if I can coax him into doing so.

My opinion could be biased a little since I don't know the difference between cons, seeing as I've only ever been to C-ACE since its local (yay for me living only 30-40mins away!'<img'>. Plus the other larger cons would probably be too much for me.

If you and your friend do go Silverfang, I'll have to hunt you down. Or vice versa. Heh.

Basically, C-ACE is a rather small convention but one that I've enjoyed even with the complaints. So if you don't mind a smaller -type convention...go for it!

Not counting Feral! when I was still going, I've only gone to one convention as a dealer, and that was Motor City Comic Con back in October.  While it has its ups (mostly having to do with the fact that Guy Davis is there and he's a wonderful person to chat with and get advice from), it certainly has its downs if you're an unknown artist without any professionally published titles under your belt.  I don't think you can ever expect to make your money back completely on a convention, but I'm curious to see how my art would sell at C-ACE over MCCC.

Lordy, if there's chocolate involved, I'll be there '<img'>

It's definitely not certain that I and my friends are going yet, but we're giving it serious thought.  For myself, the biggest problem is getting there because I'm going to be back home for the summer at that point - which effectively ensures that even a bus ticket will cost more than the cost of hotel, entry fee and table fee combined.

However, if I do get there, I'll let you know so we can find eachother.  I think my friends would love to chat with you too - they're both animators as well.

I've been going to C-ACE since it first started in 2002, so this'll be my 4th year as a Dealer there.

The fact that it's no longer a Furry convention doesn't really bother me all that much, a good majority of the artists/dealers are still furry-oriented in their stuff, and last year I also saw people selling home-made chainmail stuff (which I thought was pretty cool!'<img'>

I only had a few minor complaints about last year's con:  the hotel location is a little iffy (IMHO) because it's located somewhat in downtown Ottawa - not RIGHT in downtown, but close enough you can walk there.  Growing up Ottawa myself, I know it's horrible for parking.  We had to find a place with a decent price for parking, and even then, it was hard - it almost made me want to just take a bus there, so we wouldn't have to worry about parking (we stayed at my parents' place rather than at the hotel), but the thought of lugging ALL my stuff onto the bus didn't seem like fun, so we took the car and managed to find a parking spot.  There's no hotel restaurant, but the area is full of places where you can either sit-and-eat or take out.  I think it would've been more convenient (at least for me) if there was a place to eat at the hotel, cuz I really didn't have much time to run out and get food.  Maybe I just need a gopher... '<img'>  Especially now that I know that there's a Quiznos nearby...Mmm...Quiznos.... *drool*

There was an Artists Lounge, but it didn't seem like it to me.  It was like a hotel suite room.  I thought it would be a large-enough room with a bunch of tables or something, for artists to go to, relax, draw for each other, that kind of thing.  The only tables they had there were the coffee table and lamp table, and both were filled with junk food, and the room was pre-occupied with people watching movies on the TV, so...to me, it wasn't really a place where I could relax, since it got pretty noisy from people discussing the movie and stuff, and there's no way I could draw by putting stuff on my lap and hunch over.  I went to the Gaming Room to go draw, because...well...no one was in there, it was quiet, and it was full of tables!  '<img'>   A few other artists showed up too, so it was nice.

I already brought these things to the attention of conchair and staff, they told me they were going to fix it and make it better for this year, so that's good to hear.  They've always been so nice to me, especially for the Dealer's Room - I tend to get warm very easily, so they had placed my table under the A/C, which was sooooooo nice!  Mmmmm...cool air!  And they also had my table placed in a way so that it was easy for me to get in and out and not in anyone's way, because I'm a plus-sized gal, and I tend to take up a lot of room.   ''

All-in-all, it's a nice con.  I like going there, and I get to meet up with my net friends and make a few bucks on the side, plus visit my family all at the sametime!  I can't wait for this year's con, to see how it goes.  I'm really hoping that there will be a panel on painting with acrylics...I've suggested it, and I hope it's a go, because it's something I'd love to learn how to try.

Oooh! I hope its a go too. I really need to learn how to use acrylics. My mom gave me her paints and I've dabbled a little but often just end up making a mess. '<img'> Or I use them for custom MLPs. *coughs*

I agree with the parking thing. Being born and living in Ottawa all my life, the downtown area can be harsh when it comes to parking. I don't even have a car! I felt bad since Forrest is nice enough to drive myself and Kina, but she got stuck last year in the parking garage! Oh, that wasn't fun. And there is no way I'm dragging my artwork onto an OC Transpo bus. :DD

With all the feedback from last year, I can't wait to see how things go this year. Hopefully a little improvements here and there.

I remember the first year C-ACE opened, we took the bus in for all three days...I didn't like it too much, because I hate catching the bus at the Rideau Centre, especially REALLY late at night O.o  I liked it when it was at the Chimo, personally, because if the hotel parking filled up (and it was free parking too!'<img'> we could just park the car across the street at St. Laurent Shopping Centre and all.  And it only took about 10 minutes to get there and back on the Queensway too '<img'>

I'm not sure about doing a MLP custom panel...I did one at MFM and I was nervous as heck, and even though I was prepared for it, I became disorganized in front of everyone and started studdering and stuff...Maybe another time, once I get enough confidence of talking in front of an audience or something '<img'>

Ugh. I hate the buses late at night. Usually got a busload of drunken people. In the summer time, that'll be worse. *shudders*

The Chimo was awesome, I agree. I wish we could go back there. Everything was so easily within reach.

Cudos for trying to do the panel at least? A custom MLP panel is a cool idea. I've thought of an idea or two but I have no public speaking skills. I'm too much of an easily stressed/anxious person. I'd be up front, dark red, studdering and shaking.

I never liked taking buses late at night, no matter what time of the year it is.  Canada Day was always the worst, and the last Canada Day I actually went downtown for back 1996.  NEVER again!  I'd rather go to a nice small town that has a blue grass band and a car show then to go to downtown Ottawa for Canada Day...At least I had fun in the small towns '<img'>

And yeah, I'm not that great with speaking skills.  I also did a colouring panel at MFM, showing people how I colour with markers and pencil crayons.  If I type up a tutorial, I can explain it much better.  But since I was talking, I was basically like this: "I coloured it marker.  Then with pencil crayons.  And that's basically it."   ''   It was a hands-on type of panel, so at least people asked questions about it, and I was able to answer it and stuff...but I was nervous as heck, and felt anxious cuz I'm not very good at speaking publically in front of an audience.  If it's one-on-one, I'm fine though.  Ah well '<img'>
