Seconded :D

Though I never really liked poodles.  I just hope they don't start shaving the puff balls on them.

There was an intersting study done in 1976 by C. Schleifenbaum looking into the fur marks and coat color in wolves and poodle-wolf hybrids, raised in Kiel.

I seriously doubt it really..... and even if that is true, I really don't like that... the behaviors of the two animals are completely different, and will make for a horrible mix. Wolves and most household dogs just don't mix well. I wouldn't be shocked if those whatever you call them turn out to be reproductively sterile and/or have psychological and physical deformities =\

That's an insult to wolves everywhere!

Poodles are the most genetically convoluted, messed-up thing I know of, so these dogs are probably better off than their poodle parents!

Poodles are the weirdest dogs Ive ever seen O_o I find them horrible ugly, I wonder why people even like such a small and horribly deformed dog. (Just think of Darwin)

Although hybrids are really.... Creepy.... I like the sound of calling a breed of dogs Pookies xD, heheh

Sorry to go off on a tangent here, but every time I look back at the thread title, I can't help but to think of the M&M's christmas comercial where Red and Yellow meet Santa.

Anywho, I'm glad Im not the only one that dislikes poodles.  Kind of an ugly dog even before they shave it.

Well, realistically, didn't all dogs differentiate from the same original species?  Even taking an evolutionist approach, the odds are great enough already that the animals got started, so by Occam's Razor it must work that way.  If, like me, you believe Noah did his Ark thing, then it's obvious that all dog breeds descended from the same gene pool and different traits surfaced while others disappeared.

That's why poodles are so messed-up: they are missing the most genetic information of any dog breed.  These dogs here are probably unhappy just because of living conditions.  I would go so far as to say that any mixing of breeds (not thinning out like a previous thread on toygers) is a good thing because it encourages genetic diversity.

I just wish for better conditions for the dogs.

Um...could you explain this better? Because if poodles were missing any genetic information, they wouldn't be dogs. Some genetic traits are hidden (overshadowed by other traits), but they aren't missing.

Well, I'm no DNA specialist, but just looking at the outward appearance of different people I can tell that certain genetic markers have already been totally bred out of their genome.  Then there's the genetic exclusivity that inbreeding creates, and we all know what happens then...

But there's also the situation where certain gene mutations can "lose information" from the genome without changing the species in general.  This can cause all sorts of weird things to happen.  It's like today's supergerms: they still do their infection thing like always, but they're so deadly because they lost the ability to manufacture certain proteins our immune systems look for.

I think the guy was trying to figure out coat colors, apparently that pic I posted was of 2nd generation dogs, the 1st gens all had black coats and looked poodleish. .

heres the page

the person was using the wolf/poodle to try and explain goldendoodles(golden retriever/poodle) mixes.

Many hybrids are sterile, such as Mules (Donkey + Horse)

Not always, this is the 2nd mule mare Ive heard of that has given birth.. the last one had 2 foals in her life, one looked mulish the other looked like a horse;

Clicky

With canines tho, dog/dog specially. well theres abit of falsehood. "Hybrid" dog breeders like the idea better that thier dogs are called hybrids of 2 breeds, rather than being called what they really are "mutts". A true hybrid is a of 2 species of a simular family, not a mix of 2 breeds of the same species.

I still don't understand Labradoodles.  When I first heard about them the first thought that came into my mind was that the guy responsible just did it because he liked the sound of the word "Labradoodle."

Atleast they have a use tho, hypoallergenic fur with the smarts of a lab, they have proven good service dogs for allergic people.

During World War I and World War II, German U-boats hunted Allied shipping in groups known as "Wolfpacks". This is in reference to the common wolf behavior of hunting in packs, using U-boats.
