Function/Waveform generator ICs
« on: May 24, 2012, 06:03:43 pm »
I'm looking for one that meets the following criteria:

Currently sold by a reputable vendor
Preferably cheap (<$20 for orders of 1 unit)
Supports at least Square/Triangle/Sine outputs (though I suppose I could go with an XR2209 or somesuch, and then add on a sine-approx, but that is not preferable.)*
Maximum minimum frequency: 10Hz
Minimum Maximum frequency: 100kHz (preferably 1MHz or higher)
Must be sold in a through-hole package (or with socket for through-hole)! (DIP preferred)
Analog waveform control is much preferred to having to use digital signals.*

*Trying to use as few ICs as possible.

Current candidates and why they are not optimal:
ICL8038: Nolonger in production, not sold cheaply at well-known vendors, distortion at low frequencies, maximum frequency of ~300kHz
XR2209: no Sine output
AD9833: not through-hole, require digital control

I found the XR2206, which I can get for under $7 off jameco (thanks ziel), gives square/triangle/sine/sawtooth outputs, goes from a minimum useable frequency of 0.01Hz to "over 1MHz", is a 16pin PDIP, and can be easily controlled using variable resistors and switches, so I believe I'm going to go with that chip.

Glad the site worked out for you. They've got a massive catalog of parts, so I figured there was a good chance they might have something that would work. And yeah, their prices tend to be pretty good, too. I think that's the company my college got all its stuff from, and I've ordered a handful of things from them on my own since.

My uni apparently gets their transformers from there (big jameco sticker on it, dead giveaway ;P)
