Shapeshifter from Unsanity is the best appearance hack with desktopX like capabilities I've found for a mac. The only problem is, there is no Leopard version yet.

If you're looking for something that doesn't change so much, you could try learning how to use terminal. Here's an example:
 Â   enter the following code into terminal to make your desktop wallpaper play your screensaver:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &
