Something funny I read I though the techs would get a grin out of (too true!'<img'> ):

TANK Ex Mortis: "Cannot delete file: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."
TANK Ex Mortis: WHAT FILE, YOU CRAZY OPERATING SYSTEM!?
TANK Ex Mortis: If I was on Linux, it'd be like "There was an error, program X doesn't want you to delete that file. Here's a helpful link to teach you how to get around that. Would you like some tea?"
TANK Ex Mortis: Of course, when I want to install something on Linux, it says "You can't install that until you install these 50 libraries, update these 3 drives, downgrade this 1 driver, and pick my mom up from the airport."
TANK Ex Mortis: Whereas with Windows, it says "Click the next button over and over again until the program is installed. It will then work perfectly unless it doesn't."

Heh, yeah, sounds about right. 'Dependency hell' is why I love Fedora Core and the RPM package manager. It handles all those nasty libraries you need when you update. We just need to slap around all those irritating Debian users who keep their non-standard package format alive.   ':p'

PACKAGE MANAGER FIGHT! *grabs a Gentoo inflatable bat*

I've also shouted "what file!? what program!? you *&!@ legacy POS!" at the screen several times at work, very recognizable.

By the way, if you want to see a nice, experimental packaging/install system, check out Zero Install (preferably combined with the Rox filer and D-bus for maximum effect).

Okay. (well, I cant call you n00bs, as I have hardly ever used linux or windows)
but it is funny, I don't know half those computer terms, and yet, I have never had to deal with any of them. for me, all I have to do is "drag file into the applications folder to install"   ':p'

That would be me.   '<img'>

I use Slack more than anything else, with Deb' coming in second. I've also used Mandrake, ELX, Gentoo, and Red Hat. Even then, once past the raw "n00b" stage, I seldom bothered with software/package managers. I compile everything from source. That way, I don't have to screw around with *.rpm's, or *.deb's, etc. Just download one "tarball" and install it everywhere.   '<img'>

Dependencies can be a real she-dog. That's why I prefer to offer all my self-written apps in source form. That way, I can include all the "tarballs" required to get that app up and running. Takes care of everything, NBD.   '<img'>

I've been hooked on source for my most used programs - i686 is *much* more streamined than an i386 binary.

The rest, I'm too lazy or incompatible libc6 keeps me with the binaries.

Anyway, I've had this screenshot sitting around for a while... thought I'd share it here...

I disagree with this. Ubuntu is pretty slick, but I couldn't stand the fact that  there was no Root account, and the fact that I had to use sudo to get anything close to -su priveleges.

I would instead recommend SuSE Linux, or one of the RedHat clones.

I will also agree on the fact of South Munjoy it is rubbish,

It doesn't teach the user anything, yet I use slackware right from console onto GUI, you learn as you go in the end its not that hard to sort out a config file, or to install a new program

Linux user here!

and Simo, YAY for slackware users,

installpkg - works like a dream! or just by compiling it by source, But one of the best linux's is Slackware!

*huggles*

Never used Linux before.  I hear it's highly open source, so if you know a lot about computer programming you can pretty much make your own software.  Course, I don't personally know a whole ton about computers.

I do know the pains of Windows, though.  Guuhh.....

That's why I use Macintosh.  Easy to use right out of the box.  I know those commercials are a little corky, but you can't argue against their points.

Lil' out of date, but you can't blame me for not being here when this started ':p'

South Munjoy, in case it's still relevant; try "sudo su -". tadaa. there's ya root.

Sqwigy: If you take a look at linux, unix, irix, etc. you may notice there's already something of that sort. All of these are posix compatible and pretty much every compilable program works on these boxes. (don't be including "windows.h").
Mac OSX is sorta on that way. The backend is a BSD kernel; which is posix compatable. You can also install an X server next to cocoa and have support for pretty much every linux program you can think of.

Still; my favourite (meta) os is Gentoo. Okay; there's some problems when doing a system wide upgrade; but to me it's more important to be in control of what's actually on the system rather then having a one click noideawhatshappeningbutit(doesnt)works solution. Plus you can go for either a BSD or a linux kernel. How cool is that?

Eh, I've used both. Whilst Linux is more stable; it is hard to update to support your usual Windows recognized hardware and software. Not to mention having to pay for gaming support.

I'll take my Windows quirks until either A: They begin making everything Linux/Windows capable or B: Bill Gates is recognized as the antichrist and murdered, his company destroyed and all of the technological advancements in software.
Love me or hate me, as long as I'm on your mind. --Did I mention I was bent on world domination?! -Crazy face!-

For instance WoW, Unreal Tournament (all of 'em), Second Life and a whole bunch of other games run pretty well under linux. Also the flash games nowadays are pretty good. I'm not much of a gamer since I prefer to draw or to program something, but I just prefer linux.

I must admit, though; both on my home computer and on my laptop I've got a "backup" windows in case some program doesn't work under linux (for free), but I haven't used it for about a month or three.

I'm a slackware user and they are but sometimes you just don't want to go through dependicy hell and just use a rpm or a slackpak
