Title: IRC Issues
Post by: silverfox on January 24, 2013, 04:51:41 pm
I wouldn't make another post on this if there wasn't a few reasons, and sure enough...

Really appreciate the service, but it just seems to have become more flaky in the past month.

I'm pretty sure it went down today to fix that problem.   :)

The past 3 days, the server has gone down over 5 times for a decent duration of time with no apparent cause.

And nobody bothered to PM me or another Admin about it?  >:( How are we supposed to get issues fixed if the members don't tell us about these things?

IF THERE'S A TECHNICAL PROBLEM WITH THE IRC OR THE FORUMS, THEN SEND ME OR WEISSEMAN AN IMMEDIATE PM SO WE CAN CONTACT WHITESHEPHERD!  :goldpissed:

BECAUSE, I always assume that everyone else is, and if I do too, then it would just be really bothersome... Sowwy, I would have gladly complained to you, and I certainly will next time ;D

Kobuk,   both Weis and WS are already aware of the problem.

It's already being worked on.

I was going to say, I've already told Syi/Weisseman, so he is aware it has been a problem.

Seems to be back up, for the time being anyway.

Ok here is the info to date on the IRC.  We have noticed that the internet has been going up and down.  We placed in a support call to the cable company and they sent out a tech today (thus the outage today).  What he told us is they upgraded all the lines in the area to DOCSIS 3 a few weeks ago (we did not know this).  However our old modem (provided by the cable company is not compatible and glitches out on this standard).  He replaced the modem and I updated the IP address for our new modem.  It looked like everything was back to working fine.  However...  do not leave Murphy's Law nothing to chance.  When he swapped the modem he half unplugged the power strip powering half the network gear.  That DCed power sometime after the restart test I did after the modem swap.  We haven''t been at the computer otherwise today so didn't know till we got the second call.  So rocky day today.  But things should now smooth themselves out.  If not please let us know.

  Thank you: WhiteShepherd

So for reference, this is the authentication issue between irc2 and nickserv:

On irc:
Code: [Select]
USER bikedude880 bikedude880 irc.furtopia.org :xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
>> :irc.furtopia.org NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
>> :irc.furtopia.org NOTICE AUTH :*** Found your hostname (cached)
---STRIP---
>> :StupidFox MODE StupidFox :+iwx
>> :NickServ!NickServ@services.int NOTICE StupidFox :This nickname is registered. Please choose a different nickname, or identify via /msg NickServ identify <password>.
>> :NickServ!NickServ@services.int NOTICE StupidFox :You have 20 seconds to identify to your nickname before it is changed.
<< NICKSERV IDENTIFY xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
>> :NickServ!NickServ@services.int NOTICE StupidFox :You are now identified for Shaun.
>> :NickServ MODE StupidFox :+r
<< QUIT :Leaving

On irc2:
Code: [Select]
USER bikedude880 bikedude880 irc2.furtopia.org :xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
>> :irc2.furtopia.org NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
>> :irc2.furtopia.org NOTICE AUTH :*** Found your hostname (cached)
---STRIP---
>> :StupidFox MODE StupidFox :+iwx
>> :NickServ!NickServ@services.int NOTICE StupidFox :This nickname is registered. Please choose a different nickname, or identify via /msg NickServ identify <password>.
>> :NickServ!NickServ@services.int NOTICE StupidFox :You have 20 seconds to identify to your nickname before it is changed.
<< NICKSERV IDENTIFY xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
>> :irc.furtopia.org 401 StupidFox NickServ@irc.furtopia.org :No such nick/channel
<< QUIT :Leaving

The main thing to note is that clients on irc2 are receiving messages from "NickServ@services.int", but attempting to auth against "NickServ@irc.furtopia.org"

I'm certain this isn't that hard of an issue to overcome and there are more than a few users that would be thrilled to see it working properly.  Thanks again :)

Given the last few lines of WS's post, I sent him a message.  If you notice outages in the future, send a PM to WhiteShepherd, Weisseman, and Kobuk (just list them all as recipients of the same PM) to let them know so that it can be fixed.

I'll call WS from work again in the morning when i'm sure i'm not going to be waking him up.  I know it's frustrating that one of the servers,  and the web-client are down and i'm sure it'll be fixed as soon as possible.  However,  I would just like to let everyone know that there are two servers in the IRC network,  and the second one didn't go down. That should serve as a suitable backup for tonight.

For those who don't know,  connection info is:

Server:irc2.furtopia.org
Port:6002
Channels: #furtopia,  #6eleventeenr   (The same as usual.  Same network.  Just a different server)

Thanks.  ^_^

I cannot get on  :(

Will it work with mibbit, and if so, what should I type in?

If you have been noticing disconnect issues the new modem has been having problems and they now think it is bad.  >:(   They will be replacing it Sunday.  So expect a short outage then as modems are swapped.

Isn't that always the go-to root cause with ISPs? Connection issues? NEW MODEM! At least they'll usually not charge you if the new modem does actually fix the problem (at least that's from my experience).

I did a test connection to irc2 from Mibbit a while back.  I was able to connect using "irc2.furtopia.org:6002" (without quotes) as the server name (you can enable this text field by clicking the text that says "Server", if I recall correctly).  Note that you *shouldn't* use a plus sign as the example text might suggest.  As always, use #furtopia as the channel.

Presumably, this should still work, though I'm not able to test to verify this as I'm on a phone whose browser doesn't work with Mibbit.

I'm also having issues with the IRC... Clicking the link on the header menu does nothing but spin its wheels before finally saying it won't load after about 3-5minutes. I use a client IRC also but it's a RC, I've been having some problems with it as well so I don't wanna put a lot of weight on it not working.

But none the less, I am using IceChat 9 RC5.0, and it will not let me connect to the normal irc server or irc2

*Edit: This is what my IRC Client is saying:
[02:49.36] -irc.furtopia.org- *** Attempting to connect to irc.furtopia.org (xx.xxx.xx.xxx) on port 6007
[02:49.57] Socket Exception Error: 10060:A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a-
period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond xx.xxx.xx.xxx:6007

If you look at the previous entries in this thread, WS said the service would be down today so that the modem could be replaced.

When you connected to irc2, did you use port number 6002? As of the last time I checked (a few hours ago), irc2 is up, but it's a different port number from the main IRC server (which was down as of when I checked).

Not sure if this is the same issue everyone else is having, but we thought we would voice it anyway.
Whenever we try to join either of the servers, our browser (google chrome) opens a new tab, does the loading screen for about 30 seconds, and then says: "Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to irc.furtopia.org". This has been happening since the issues started. There isn't a problem with our firewall, and the only thing that has changed is that we updated our Java to the latest version. Any ideas?

Mine was doing the same (Chrome here as well), so I assumed it was fully down. IRC2, however IS up, though I'm on it using an IRC client (IceChat).
Not really sure what advice to give to get to it via browser through Furtopia itself, though I can confirm that it's up and working with another client.

Mibbit (http://www.mibbit.com) is a good temporary solution; click "Launch app" from the homepage to use it without making an account.  See one of my previous posts in this thread on how to set the port number.

A note for those who are reading this thread: the web interface for the IRC is back up.  If you want to connect to the IRC without downloading a client, go to http://irc.furtopia.org (http://irc.furtopia.org) , select "irc2" and "6002" from the drop down menus (you *must* choose irc2; irc is currently down), input a nick you'd like to use, and click the "Chat on IRC!" button (you will need Java installed for the applet to work).

Should the web interface not work for you, then connecting by Mibbit (http://chat.mibbit.com/) is still possible; see my previous post (http://forums.furtopia.org/index.php?topic=45382.msg873954#msg873954) on how to do that.
