I want to see both sides of this.
« on: September 26, 2003, 10:15:08 pm »
Hello. I used to be a big fan of SomethingAwful.com, whose authors dedicated themselves to laughing at everything wrong with the internet, and seemed to have made a constant mockery of furries (you're not even allowed to join the forums if they can tell that you are one). Ironically, they are what led me to you fine folks. I have searched far and wide through the internet (or at least the search engines) for info on you guys, since being a fairly intelligent person, I want to see both sides of an arguement before deciding. I have come here to learn more about you, and possibly hanging by.

My e-mail address is silentman_000@yahoo.com, and I currently am trying to re-download ICQ after I had to reformat my hard drive.
Furry Pending.

I can't stand SA. If you wanna talk about anything, e-mail me, or contact me on one of the messenger services I have (they should be in my profile).

I'm not sure what to do here, seeing how you ain't a fur. Oh well, I'll end it the usual way:

It took me a while to decide to get into the fandom. So welcome to the forum anyways.

Hello and Welcome! *extends a friendly paw*

So you come to us from SomethingAwful? I've never actually been there, but I'm sure after you hang around here a bit you'll see we're not that bad. Quite a friendly bunch a furs here really.

SomethingAwful.com - the main reason I'm not openly displaying my furriness. Probably at least 75% of my school regularly visits that site. ':p'

My, we are some friendly folks here, aren't we?
I've always been a bit furry, and I really just want to find out if it's okay. SA always takes it onto themselves to point out the worst in everything, but of course, they're helped out by people who actually create websites devoted to banging plushies. I can see that it should be perfectly fine to embrace my furryness.
Furry Pending.

Heya, silentman.
Welcome to the furtopia.org forums.
It seems you've taken a bit of an unusual route for getting into this fandom, but there have been some other odd ones... such as people finding furry and getting into it despite seeing the negative media as a first impression. '<img'>
I find it ironic that SA pokes fun at "what is wrong with the internet" seeing as people with that sort of mentality are "what is wrong with the internet" in the first place. They're what's wrong with humanity, as well. Making fun of people and harrassing them simply for being different is not something that hits high on the cool scale.
Anyways... Happy to have ya here. See ya around!

Yes, I've seen SA and I'm not particularially fond of them myself.

It is a strange route you took to get here. However you got here is fine.

Is 'retaliate' the word you really wanted to use? Sounds like you fought off the hug.

And yes, we are a bunch of friendly folks and there is always plenty of hugs for those who want them. I guess our way of saying high, welcome, and to help others feel more comfortable.

No one means any harm by it. Just a friendly gesture to welcome others.

If you are interested, Furtopia has more than the forums for you to check out;

Artwork, Stories and Poetry, and of course our Music webpages!

(giggles as I walk over and wrap my wings about Darius and Sunook)

Some times it takes other a bit to get used to being hugged. I know I did when I went to my first con. I was in such shock that people I didn't even know would come up and hug me! ':.'

I'm still a little shy about it but I do hug now and then and let others hug me. It is a nice way of saying hi and goodbye. '<img'>

Yep; it's okay. '<img'>

I suppose SA are just having a laugh from their point of view, but IMO it's gone well beyond being remotely funny now, and is just mindless "fur-bashing" for the most part. Bad-taste humour is one thing... but SA seem to have forgotten the "humour" part. '<img'>

Anyway, one thing I'd say is that furry is a very broad church. Sure, there are furs who do things and have views that you won't like - there's no point in pretending otherwise. But that applies to pretty much any group of people. The thing I have against places like SA is that they take a very narrow slice of furdom and make out that all of us are like that.

Still - I admire you for coming to have a look yourself to see what we're really about. I hope you'll enjoy yourself, too - believe me, I'm a very shy and nervous person in RL, and yet I've found the vast majority of furs extremely friendly and welcoming. '<img'>

Welcome Silentman,

I think everyone already said all there is to say about SA, so I won't go there.  I will say that Furtopia is great place to get a general overview of the fandom and different types of furs/people who are in it.

Go read up on the furries for furries section.  Lots of info.

And Sunookitsune, I always take and give hugs  '<img'>

Welcome Silentman,
Wow, am I late for your welcome. I usually am late for stuff anyway. I have never even heard of SomethingAwful.com. From your description, I'm glad I haven't until now. Do not be frightened of hugs or anything like that. As it had been put before, it is a form of greeting and welcome. It was strange for me too when I frist was hugged on-line by someone I didn't know. If I hadn't done research on it before-hand I would have been nervious too. It is fun to give and recive hugs, I enjoy it. It is very comoforting to know that someone would hug you even if they don't know you. Its nothing to frightened or offened of at all, really.

I've always been a bit furry, and I really just want to find out if it's okay.

SA and P.O.E (Portal of Evil) go hand in hand with one another.  It's odd that so many people actually gather around just to bash someone for (about 99.999999% of the time) nothing.  One should never take the opinions of people who are closed minded into light because it holds no strength.

Being furry, is fine.  Why people have a problem with others being furry I don't understand (people push their religious ideals and personal beliefs into it) but I won't get into that.  One should live their life as they see fit and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that doesn't mean you have to believe their opinion.

Aside from that.  Welcome to the forums. ^=^V  *waves*  Hope you have fun, or atleast make some friends.

Naw...I just think it's not funny....I used to have a little chuckle now and then...but other then that...it's pretty boring. Welcome anyways!

Weaslie! Weaslie! Weaslie! Weaslie! Weaslie! Weaslie! I love ferrets and stoats and such. Welcome. Furries in general are very excentric. I as a non-fur can testify because I am in their community that they are pretty much like the rumors say they are. Its all a matter of if you can accept people for who they are and what they want to be...or...are they what YOU want them to be. Such a simple question as this holds your answer.

Hmmm... I'd go along with the first bit, in that certainly many of my fellow furs are, let's say, slightly odd. I certainly am! '<img'>

But as for the bit about rumours... most of the rumours I see from non-furry sources are the tired old Vanity Fair/MTV-type clichés about how yiff is all that furs care about etc etc etc. And at least among the furs I know, that just ain't so.

Well I like hugss.. *grins and hugs all that will let me*
I like to give and get hugs.. etc..

Ask Kada-Ru, if you ever met me at a con I will hug you alot. '<img'>

Anyways SA is not a very frendly site.. but hey its lead alot of furries here.. So in a way we should thank them..

I have noticed in looking at UK / USA websites and watching British and American TV.. American TV tends to make alot of shows that atack anything not 'normal' and 'mainstream'.
Where as UK tend to accept it more.

But in a way.. we, as furries, encurage it.. I mean we are more open and show that we are different, and gay, and new.. so we are just giving them lots of ideas.. and if they spend afew secounds looking online they get pages and pages of yiffy gay artwork..

I would say in about 2 to 4 years if we just ignore the media (TV and websites like SA).. they will move on to some other new group to attack..

*leaps from a tree and performs the Flying Squirrel Hug maneuver on Sunookitsune, Drake, Darius, and Kada-Ru ':p' *

SA dedicates itself to pointing out 'the worst of the internet', so if there was anything about furry that was 'worse' than what you've heard already, it would be up on SA in a flash.  But you've decided to seek us out anyway, so you have nothing left to worry about.  Besides, you don't have to be into yiff and such to be furry.  A lot of furries stay into Disney-esque things, and are fairly 'normal' (which really isn't the word I want to use but you know what I mean) in their real lives.

So, yeah, furry is what you make out of it.  If you want yiff and TS and such, there is enough of it around, but there's plenty of clean furry things too.  Any part of furry that you don't want to be in, you don't have to.

And don't mind the hugs '<img'>
