Just a heads up to all members here.
Since our switch of servers there have been some good things (speed and security). But we have also had many frustrating issues mainly with the hosting and the porting of our software. Due to these problems and wanting to improve services for existing members we will be completely replacing our hosting software. We will also be getting a commercial control panel that will allow members to add/remove their own mysql/domains/email a feature we have been wanting for years. I have also decided to hire a professional to help with this transfer.
When we got the new server it was a step in the right direction but I want to push till we have the reliable and trouble free hosting we had before. So on 6/1/2010 Furtopia hosting will be taken offline to make these updates. The software will be updated then all user web accounts will be restored by hand/script. Down/work time is estimated to be 1-4 days depending on many issues. However I will leave the forums online which can be reached at: http://forums.furtopia.org
I do not normally ask for donations. However this upgrade will cost us many hundreds of dollars. If you possibly can donate to this project it would be much needed and appreciated! Paypal address: fuzzydog@whiteshepherd.net

----EDIT-----Upgrade Done---ALL HOSTING MEMBERS PLEASE READ!!!!!!
Furtopia web hosting now uses a user control panel to let members manage their own accounts.
ALL Furtopia web hosting members MUST-I repeat-MUST log into their personal Web Control Panel to turn on their FTP account/access!
You can get to your cool web hosting control panel from the Furtopia main page or https://www.furtopia.org/dtc Notice there is no ssl cert yet so it will warn and you will need to give an exemption.
Log in with your Furtopia username and password.
The control panel is divided into your "My Account" -> You can view your stats and add new domains to your account. And your domains-> Here you will see your Furtopia/tdl domain where you can make ftp, dns, subdomain, and email services. Then Databases (your mysql), Password changing, and Support Tickets.
The very FIRST thing you will want to do when you enter is create an FTP account to your web space. All ftp accounts will need recreated because the account owner (you) now has control over ftp. For example if you host a collaborative project and want helpers to only access a part of your website (without being able to reach the other parts of your webpage) you could create a second ftp account with only this access.
To create your FTP click on the + sign next to your domain name. Next click on "FTP accounts". Choose your personal ftp login(@yourdomain.furtopia.org will be added to the login automatically), password and pick a path. On the Path option I STRONGLY suggest you pick the last option unless you know what you are doing (that says)-> /yourdomain.furtopia.org/subdomains/www/html/ Picking this path will have your ftp send you to your web html folder. Higher paths are chooseable to allow users to download logs/mail/etc (be careful accessing this! You can break it if you are not careful).
Example: Since my domain is whiteshepherd.furtopia.org if I typed in the ftp login "luckydog" at creation my ftp login would be "luckydog@whiteshepherd.furtopia.org" since @whiteshepherd.furtopia.org will be appended at the end of my logins. The reason for this is it allows users to pick any login they want without another user reserving that login. It may sound complicated but it's fairly easy following the menus.
If after trying you still can not figure it out no worries. Just send Kada-Ru a PM and we will set up an a ftp account for you.
Added Note: When you create a new service in the control panel it takes up to 10 min for the service to become live.
Good luck and good testing... WhiteShepherd

As soon as I pay rent, I'll send what I can to help, WS. :)
Also, I'm excited for work on the hosting services! While they're still around, I remember they were the thing that attracted me to Furtopia in the first place. I found some amazing artists and writers through this website, and I think the attempt to restore them is well worth the effort.
In other words, I'm excited for this. :D
-
I'm going to donate too as soon as I get the chance.
One thing I think a lot of people might not realize is that keeping Furtopia on the web costs craploads of money. Furtopia's server costs, domain bills, and bandwidth charges really start to add up after a few months. But WhiteShepherd has been paying for all those charges out of his own pocket for eight years now, through thick and thin - without complaining, without asking for donations, without anything.
Now, though, WhiteShepherd has this huge expense on his hands that's going directly towards making the site better, and he needs some help from us to cover the cost. If you have some money to spare, and if you feel attached enough to this site to want to make it as great as you can, it'd be really wonderful if you could chip in whatever you can offer.
Whoa, sorry I just got all PBS on you. I didn't mean to. That was just something I honestly wanted to say.
-
I wish I had a job, then I would help out. D=
If you're still feeling the pressure in a month or so I'll send what I can, just as soon as I get situated with college and my new job.
I'm really glad that this site is here though. I like having a place to go to where there aren't any idiots. And everyone here is so open, and understanding. I appreciate everyone here and everything here, and I love WhiteShepherd for making all of this possible.

Nashee pretty much took the words out of my mouth. I've only been here for a few months now, but after even that short amount of time, everybody has been able to put up with my crap for this long, I'm amazed I haven't been kicked off the site yet ;). Everybody here is willing to listen to whatever it is you say, and I'm really glad to be here.
If I had some way I could donate, absolutely, I would, but right now, I'm have no way of sending. I honestly wish I could though. All I can say at the moment, is that I hope this all works out.
-
Finances are really hard on me and Kada right now. But this is something that NEEDS done so we're doing it. Anyone who can help we deeply apreciate the support!
WhiteShepherd
-
I don't get paid till Friday. If I can send something, then I will, but it will have to be by regular mail.
-
All FTP services have been shut down (to prevent changes). Now doing backups of all Furtopia files to prep for the update.
-
That explains why Furtopia hasn't been working right lately and why I can't connect at all now. I hope it goes well. I'd gladly donate something to help with the cost myself if I didn't have a large amount of my own debt to pay off.
-
mysql, does that mean we'll be able to use wordpress soon?
-
We've always had mysql. Some users do use wordpress. But keep in mind large programs like that MUST revolve around your art base. No opening up a php heavy portal for "Bob's Fishing" etc.
-
Ok the forums are now moved onto a little "temp server" to keep member updates live. Moving the IRC server next.
-
Whiteshepherd, good luck with all the moving and changes. :3

I figured, but i wasn't able to use wordpress because...i couldn't install it. i sent an email to the furtopia admin address and never got a response about it.
-
you have to have requested mysql support first (ask whiteshepherd for that later when he's not busy if you dont have it yet.)
-
To any future members who have recently registered with Furtopia in the last day or so and/or will be registering in future days, The staff regrets to inform you that your registration accounts for our Furtopia forums will not be able to be approved/processed at this time due to the server work which is currently being done by the head Administrator (WhiteSheperd). We hope to have the part of the server work finished soon this week that allows us to finish processing member registrations for the forums. We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused and we please ask for your patience.
-
Oh hey, was that whole incorrect URL part of the switch?
-
What do you mean?
-
Nice upgrade =3
I hope it could be soon finished. Can I sent you my donation by Western Union or AFEX?
-
Oh hey, was that whole incorrect URL part of the switch?
I'm assuming it was, yeah. (FYI, Kobuk, the Furtopia domain was "gone" for most of the workday. But here we are again, hurray!)
-
Been putting a LOT of work into this. It's going slow but so far so good. I'll post some screenshots tomarrow.
This will allow our web host members to change names, mysql, databases, and even get web mail. More to come!

Thank you and a big hug to you WhiteShepherd.

When I go to my website, all that shows there is "It works!". Does this have anything to do with this server upgrade? I also can't login to my account via ftp.
This is my website: http://www.toranekostudios.dragoncity.net/
-
Yes all sites were taken off-line to preform this upgrade.
Well it's been a LOT of work. There is still plenty to do but we have enough of a working system to start reinstalling the user web pages. We will start the restore later today. Users will get a control panel they can manage their site. Here are a few teaser pics:

I used this kind of thing helping the person that hosts my .com site. Works nice.
I look forward to seeing it up and working.
Keep up the nice work WS.

Will I still be able to upload via FTP from my computer like I use too?
-
Yes ftp will be there. You can even customize it. All features will be there plus a lot more. You can even put a email on your domain like example: superskunk@mutantskunk.com or mutantskunk@mazz.furtopia.org (if you just have a Furtopia domain). Users will no longer need to ask for mysql. They can add databases as needed (yes we have backups of old DBs too). Once migration is complete (it's a HUGE job so please be patient and excuse our dust) I will be putting up a post for users who have old accounts on how to migrate into using the new system. It's not hard but I figure a instruction post for first timers will be helpful if needed.
I also bought an extra hard drive for the server and have installed a raid1 array. In layman's terms this puts a redundant copy of our data on two hard drives. If a hard drive fails the other hard drive will still have the data. This should (minus Murphy) reduce downtime and chance of data loss.

Wow how cool.
Patience is worth a good upgrade, especially on a site we don't pay for. I'm excited for the new shiny stuff. :D
-
Hah, well whaddya know? A server upgrade! I was wondering what was up. And here I was debating asking you if you planned on upgrading any time soon, 'cause I got a good deal on some servers. x_x (I sell internets now)
Good luck, WS. Lemme know if you need anything. (You know how to reach me)
-
A lot of work transferring as well as some technical challenges which we have resolved as we got to them. We started restoring the user accounts this afternoon and will continue till 11PM picking up tomorrow. Once finished with the user accounts we'll start restoring the user web files. With some luck we'll have accounts and tld's on-line some time Monday.

Thank you for the hard work. 8)
-
But, but... where'd the IRC go? :'(
-
Ok the forums are now moved onto a little "temp server" to keep member updates live. Moving the IRC server next.
As quoted they are working to get things back up.
Should be soon now. :orbunny:
-
IRCd should now be online.
-
For all the staff working so hard on this. Thank you very much for all your hard work and effort into these forums!
Have a box of Fifth Avenue bars (http://www.bestbuycandy.com/productcart/pc/catalog/avenue_1272_general.jpg)!
Make sure you guys share now.
-
Yes lots of appreciation go to you all with a dozen bags of
chocolate chip cookies. :orbunny:
-
The IRC won't work for me. It gave me this instead:
It Works!
No, sorry to disappoint you, Mr. Chat-Room, but that is not what I'd call working.
-
The java client will come back in time. If you use a client like Icechat, Xchat or MIRC it works fine.
-
User web data files are copying back now. Over a million files so it has been copying a few hours and will most likely be a few more.
-
Good luck with the rest of the workload.
-
Go WS go! :)
-
Ok the rest of the user backup data has been uploaded. Next on order of priority I will be restoring:
1) TLDs
2) Mysql DBs
3) Fixing path changes in php scripts (as I find them).
4) Indexer Gallery
5) SSL cert
Once the changes are finished I will open up an official web page detailing the new system and how to use it.
However for those of you who are technically inclined who want to get to their site ahead of me or the curious I am opening up the control panel into a beta test.
The reason for going with a control panel is this gives the users more control and more services. For example, you want a mysql database? YOU can do it! You want email at your personal or Furtopia domain? Easily done! You'll also have live access to your logs and usage data.
The control panel is not finished or even skinned so should be considered a work in progress. IE: "open Beta test" As always Furtopia services are an "as is" best effort service and come with no warranty expressed or implied. Report any bugs/problems you find and please read all instructions.
Furtopia User Control Panel Address: https://www.furtopia.org/dtc (https://www.furtopia.org/dtc) Notice there is no ssl cert yet so it will warn and you will need to give an exemption.
Log in with your Furtopia username and password.

I didn't notice this thread until a few days ago. Remember the problem of the topic reply emails not coming through to yahoo addresses a few of us posted about a while back? I knew it was on the list of things to do and a couple of days ago I got one that worked correctly. Had the link to the topic and all instead of an empty email. Then I stopped getting them at all again, which is when I went looking and found this thread.
I'm not complaining or anything because I know things are still being worked out, but when I got the one email and then nothing, it reminding me of and made me wonder if it was a fluke similar to the house lighting scene in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

FTP question because it always auto-logged in for me before.
What do I fill in on the blanks.
Host: ?
Username: This I think is where mazz@mutantskunk.com goes
Password: I now this
Port: ?
-
Your ftp
address: ftp.furtopia.org
login: <ftploginyoucreate@yourdomain.furtopia.org> In your case mazz: mazz@mutantskunk.com
password: <your-ftp-password>
port: 21
Most ftp clients will save your settings once you log in.
-
Ok Top Level Domains (TLDs) are now restored. If you have a TLD that is not working send me a PM.
Next on the list is Mysql DBs restored. Lot of these. ;)
Added Note: When you create a new service in the control panel it takes up to 10 min for the service to become live.
Anyone use the control panel? Impressions?
WhiteShepherd
-
Looks nice Whiteshepherd. Nice seeing how much space you use up now, didn't know i was that much over the limit though x.o
-
If your over the limit and using it for your art just shoot me a PM and I will gladly raise your limit.
-
Dude, this is lookin' great!
Just wanted to say that I'm excited about all these changed. You rock, WS! :D
-
I have had to leave town and will be back thursday. Accessing from a icreamshop with 1% battery. lol Anyways we'll get the forums off this flaky temp server and get those DBs finished restoring. gtg power!
-
It did lift my spirits to see the page turn from "It works!" to the the furtopia mainpage. Thanks for the great work.
-
Just another update here to let any new applicants who registered for an account here at Furtopia know, that the staff cannot process/approve new registrations at this time due to the server work which is being done. Any person who registered at Furtopia in the last few days, Your account is "on hold" and has not been rejected. Any person who registers for an account now or in the next several hours or days, your account will also be "on hold". Once the server work is done, the staff will review and process all registrations as soon as we can.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and we hope to have things running smoothly again very soon. Again, please be patient and we will make further updates as they become available. Thanks. :)
-
Only a tip the webmail is https://yourdomain/squirrelmail/ or simply https://www.furtopia.org/squirrelmail/
-
Ok forums are now on the main server. Mail should be working too. Let me know if you notice any problems with these services.
-
I'm getting mail right it seems now. Thanks! :)
-
are the server upgrades complete? i've watched my site change a few times today, from either not working in pieces, or working completely, and once it went back to being the furtopia main page, but thu all this i haven't been able to get into my ftp. i'm confused. if the upgrades are finished what do i have to do to get back into my ftp?
also furry photoframe is acting weird. it like, hangs, and you have to press the "stop" button on yoru browser for the stuff to actually show up.
apologies if there is still work being done.
-
Probably gonna be awhile since he's gotta edit everyone's mysql to reflect the changes in the server / site paths, then get them all imported back into the system. Then theres optimizing all of those databases to improve speed/load times, and whatever all comes after that. Considering how many web accounts are on furtopia, its suprising how much has been done so quickly.
-
I am half done with mysql and I'm fixing paths as I go.
ryokox I made a earlier post saying how you need to log into your web portal to re-create your ftp. Read the post and try creating your ftp (I suggest this as your web portal can be VERY useful to you). If you have trouble after that I'll recreate your ftp myself.
-
No I think he's already got one, cause i've been getting connection timeouts most the day. I just figured it was disabled for all the mysql work.

Do you have "passive mode" turned on in your ftp client?
-
tried setting filezilla into active mode and it seems to have connected.
Sometime later on, can you set it to allow for folder deletion? got rid of the old personal phpmyadmin, files are gone but folder stucture remains. Doesn't have to be anytime right now considering how busy you are and all you've got on your plate atm.
-
just wondering, did the database changed?
or are you using a backup? because suddenly my ftp password comes in as refused.. IE I cannot login.

Yes, the FTP changed. You can read WhiteShepherd's post here (http://forums.furtopia.org/index.php/topic,38666.msg748442.html#msg748442) that talks about setting up the FTP. Following what he says there should take care of the problem. If it doesn't, post here again.

I can't log into dtc because my password has a disallowed symbol in it.

*facepalms*
Alright, I corrected it. Last night was a late night for me. x.x
Anyway, looks like it was linked by someone else. I'm not sure what to do if there's a disallowed symbol, though. :o

unfortunately that thing ALSO refuses my password.
so no way I can get in to restore my FTP :/
I wonder how old was the database rollback because I remember that whiteshephard helped change my password after some russian dude got into and staretd putting music and warez on it.
-
Been working a lot but still updating. I'll fix your FTP Cesarin in the morning.
I've taken the IRC server offline to preform a important security software update. IRC services should be restored in 12 hrs.
-
Hi, Just wanted to say that I did make the changes for ftp logging a day or so ago and it worked. But currently I can't seem to log in at all.
-
Its working now. :)
-
Made some changes. If you still have issues with ftp let me know.
-
If I'm trying to connect through an FTP program, what should I enter as "Host"? Because right now, I can't log in; I'm getting an "Unable to make a connection." error. :(
-
host is still ftp.furtopia.org port 21
for your name is yourname@yoursite.org yourpassword
might need to set your ftp client into active mode
-
I'm still waiting for my password to be manually changed so I can get into DTC. Its still denying it due to unallowed characters.
-
Sent you a PM earlier. The password was created at account creation. Just enter your password and leave out the "%". Detailed login instructions sent via PM.
To everyone else check out your control panel! It gives you a LOT of power to make changes to your account. To log in:
address: https://www.furtopia.org/dtc <---Will work with your own "domain/dtc" as well.
login: <yourfurtopialogin>
password: <yourfurtopiapassword>
If you have any confusion/questions shoot me a PM.
-
thanks, got into dtc now.
is work still being done on the servers? furtopia.org, my website, and a friend's website i've been keeping an eye on keep going on and offline in different intervals. at the moment i can't log into ftp either. it times out. made a new ftp name, but now its giving the same error that its been giving. "critical error, could not connect to server" after it accepts the username and tries to get the password. then that happens.
-
If you use Filezila, open up your site manager window (if you've preset your info) click transfer settings, and set it to active mode, atleast that seems to be working better for me.
okay occassionally still getting the connection problem too so must be something else...
-
Ok your sires should never go offline. Ftp this sounds odd. The next time it refuses your connection ftp to: 24.123.192.178 and let me know if that resolves the issue?
Edit: I may of found a routing issue that was causing the problem. Let me know if things clear up.
Main Furtopia website back online.
-
Still getting the same FTP error when trying to connect. Heres the log from filezilla:

Ok... something REALLY screwy is going on somewhere and I don't know what. I typed in a jibberish name and password just to see what the error would be and it was the EXACT SAME ERROR.... Which makes no sense, it should have said invalid username and/or pass.

Still getting the same FTP error when trying to connect. Heres the log from filezilla:

Response: 220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [privsep] [TLS] ----------

Response: 530 Login authentication failed

*EDIT*
Ok... something REALLY screwy is going on somewhere and I don't know what. I typed in a jibberish name and password just to see what the error would be and it was the EXACT SAME ERROR.... Which makes no sense, it should have said invalid username and/or pass.

thats the generic error that you get when you dont give the server the username/password it requires.

well, i've redone my ftp username and pass over and over again using different names and passwords and tried going into barebones ftp with a browser and still getting the same authentication error.
-
Ryoko, did you get an email that your pass had been changed? I had to manually reset passwords on ones that had invalid characters in them.

No, I never got an email. I think for some reason, I don't get emails from furtopia at all (except from the forums, now. for some reason.) because my php scripts that are supposed to send out emails to me don't work either, when they used to a loooong time ago.
i replied to your PM about that password. DTC is fine now, I just can't get into FTP.
-
Been working a lot but still updating. I'll fix your FTP Cesarin in the morning.
I've taken the IRC server offline to preform a important security software update. IRC services should be restored in 12 hrs.
any changes WS?

i can get to the IRC now but when i connect there's just a blank white screen!

Did you remake your ftp account with the DTC?
Because your new login should be something like this, for example: Xikaiden@werewolfhero.furtopia.org or loginname@yoursite.furtopia.org
-
Cesarin I created an ftp for you.
address: ftp.furtopia.org
login: cesarin@cesarin.furtopia.org
password: <put-your-old-password-here>
However I want you to be able to use your user account as it will help you a LOT.
To get there go to:
https://www.furtopia.org/dtc <--Link also on main page.
login: cesarin
password: <put-your-old-password-here>
Let me know if you can't log in.
Mongoose: It seems working for other users. That error is typically java blocked or not loaded on host browser?

Thanks WS, the FTP works just fine, but I cant get to login in the DTC (I'm unsure what was my older password, I tried my usual ones for furtopia and still cant get in, weird..)
also just wondering if you could also change my email address to cesarinthewhitedragon at gmail dot com so I can reset it and set a newer password just in case.
-
Uh.. my friend's ftp looks very... weird. none of her own files are there, and there are a ton of weird folders. and yet her website looks how its supposed to look. she's without internet atm so i fixed her dtc and ftp accounts for her and when i looked inside its--- uhhh. i dont even know. her username is biskizit.
-
Tell your friend to go into the DTC - chose her account - ftp accounts, click her ftp account name, and edit it and set the path to the last option.
/accountname.furtopia.org/subdomains/www/html/
she probably chose / or one of the others which is showing her root account folders, while it'll make saving her email logs easy, if she accidently deletes something she could mess up her web account, so if she's fairly newbie-ish, she should probably go with the above ftp filestructure.

Had a line outage last night and when it came back up took out a modem on IP 24.123.192.170. They just finished replacing the modems so all services should now be live.

Yeah I noticed it, I were uploading something by FTP when connection down...

any update?
-
Ok finished patching/recoding the main Furtopia Gallery Indexer. I took some time to make some visual improvements to the display as well as a added play button. So let me know what you think? There are bound to be bugs which I'll fix as found. The links (add description, upload, etc) are off-line and I will code them after AC.
Cesarin I added your e-mail your good to go. ;)

Even though the individual sites cannot be seen until the re-working is complete, can we still update and post our updates to the Furtopia server?

all right, so I should just do a password reset and set my new password?
-
Patrick yes your website is live and you can post to it and it should be viewable.
Cesarin you can change your password to anything you wish in the user control panel. Just chose, click, done!

I type in the URL in my browser, but I can't see it when I do it that way. It's just a blank page.
I think I missed a step.

WS: I think the password retrieval of the DTC is severely broken... I put my email (the cesarinthewhitedragon one) and it told me it was associated with like.. 300 accounts ( including yours..)

When will thumbnails and directories be working again? Here's a directory I created as an example.
http://cloudchasershaconage.furtopia.org/cats/
There's supposed to be 30 pictures/drawings involving cats there, that's what I see when viewing with an ftp program, but only 5 are listed. Of those that are listed, no thumbnails are showing.
-
He is working on that problem right now. :)
-
Ok spent the better part of the day on indexer and found the problem. It wasn't handling the long image paths gracefully and saving the thumbnail everywhere except where it was meant too. So if you find a file that looks like part of a path that was the bug. I fixed the code so as long as the image is not corrupted it should convert fine and in the proper place.
Cesarin a lot of old accounts did not have e-mails associated with them. I'll update your email tomorrow from your forums e-mail.

Seems to be working 97% OK, now, much thanx for all your help!
97% = when I tried the example directory I posted, one out thumbnail of the 30 images didn't load. I'm not a nitpicker so I'm gonna complain about that, I'm just mentioning it because I thought you might like to know :-)

I saw that actually. I suspect the image has an error in it. Load it in a image editor and resave it. That should do the trick. The indexer uses Imagemagick libary which will halt if it finds a errored image. I plan to add a image-error thumbnail for them when things settle down a bit.

ferretcookies have you logged into your web admin panel and created a FTP account? The first post of this thread will have the details. If you still have issues let me know.
-
Furtopia web hosting now uses a user control panel to let members manage their own accounts.

The IRC seems to be down, is this because of the server upgrade?
