Title: IRC HELP!
Post by: Kael on October 03, 2012, 08:42:30 am
I have been trying for the longest time to get on the Furtopia IRC, using chat clients since the ChatRoom link doesn't work for me ever... I have done the Chatzilla thing multiple times, and even tried IceChat... nothing's working! HELP!

Hi Kael,

What exactly is not working?  Can you give me a screenshot or description?  Maybe an error message?

Thanks,

Okay,

This is a thread to help figure out  why Kael can't get any clients working.

As it is not related to Kael's problem, please continue any discussion relating the the current outage in the following thread:  http://forums.furtopia.org/index.php?topic=44839.msg864967#new

@Kael:  I was just in the IRC a few moments ago. Everything appears to be up and running. If there's a problem, then it's on your end.

Yeah, I know it is. I just don't see what's up. I actually had it up and running one time on Chatzilla, but now it doesn't work period. I tried Icechat, and that doesn't work...

Gah, frustrated...
EDIT: It is saying that I am being forcefully rejected connection either by the server or by my computer...

Server, port number, client will be the main 3 to worry about currently.

Open port 6007 in your firewall?

I am allowing it port 6007 full access both inbound and outbound, now... Is it a tcp or a udp, or what?

Are you connecting through a router? Because those can have their own firewalls.
If you are, you may need to either open port 6007, or make an exception for the chat program you are trying to use, within the router's firewall settings in addition to what you did on your computer.

It would be best to check and see if port 6007 is clear and open all the way to the internet…

You can use this to check if your computer is visible over a given port: http://www.canyouseeme.org

It says it cannot connect on the chat client... I am seriously considering bringing it to the campus tech people to see if they can get it working...

Would it be possible for you to take a screenshot of the error or copy and paste the exact text?   Any error codes?

Connecting...
Unable to connect : java.net.ConnectException : Connection refused: connect

That's what I get on the IRC page...

Quote
Socket Error: 10061: Connection is forcefully rejected (Server)
And that is IceChat

First make sure Java is installed, enabled, and up to date.
Then check and make sure that your antivirus and or firewall is not blocking Java from connecting to the internet.
Once that's done, check and see if your connection works now, (pending that you had to make changes and or updates).
If you still can't connect, continue reading…

In IceChat, right click on the entry (that you should have), for Furtopia and select “Edit Server…” (If you are using the default setup, the Furtopia entry should be in the right pane, under the “Favorite Servers” tab.)

Once in the server settings, under “Basic”, check the entries for “Server Name:” and “Server Port:”

If Server Name says anything other than:  irc.furtopia.org
And if Server Port is anything other than:  6007
Then you will not be able to connect, make absolutely sure that everything is typed 100% verbatim to what I typed.
If your entries differ in any way, make the necessary corrections and see if that fixes the problem, if it does not fix the problem, or if your entries are correct to begin with.
Then it would help to know what other settings you have, such as are you using any Proxy or BNC settings in IceChat, if you have any auto-defines, or any auto-join settings, etc. that may be conflicting with how your client connects.

Your campus may be blocking the dns name.  So lets try this.  You said you had chatzilla?  For address use: 75.179.36.211    do NOT put http:// or anything else.  JUST the IP address.  For port put 6007 and for channel put #furtopia.    Let me know if that works?  If it does I'll try setting up a unblocked DNS.

The Java... now I remember... I was told by other students that the school computers have very crooked Java workings. I think it's incompatible.
