Title: Why increased Private Message Censoring?
Post by: Arashi_Calunata on September 08, 2013, 09:09:50 pm
This is more of a question than a suggestion, but I think it belongs here.

Why have the censoring systems on Private Messages been so heavily boosted? I understand that this IS a Family Friendly Forum, but Private Messages are supposed to be Private. Why censor it, without giving it a user choice option, not to mention censoring something only one person (Or more if selected, but certainly not everyone) will receive? Just a checkmark or something for censoring would be nice, instead of permanent pacifism in text.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean? Are you saying that you can't swear or use foul language in PM's?

Sorry about not being clear, I'm very tired. Anyways, yes. It's only allowing light language, the same that's on the forums. Everything else is censored or changed.

As a short term fix, you could always use email.

Why short term?

Why short term?

It was only a suggestion in case you urgently needed to use swears in your messages.

I'm not sure if it's possible to exempt the censor from catching swear words and such in PM's. I'll have to discuss it with Weisseman.

*Nods* Point recieved. Although, seeing as XBL's internet's all but ruined; That (Email), Facebook, they got rid of messenger, I really don't have anything else. I suppose I am being unreasonable in wanting this gone, but I can't see why at least having a checkbox for it would be a bad idea.

Actually, I'd be fine with it if it just replaced it with a universal censor (Like Bungie.Net's "-Blam-" censor), instead of some ridiculous things.

Also, thank you, Kobuk  :) I hope I'm not being too pushing about these sorts of changes (Derilect profiles, backgrounds, et cetera). If I am, I'm sorry.

Nothing has changed as far as I'm aware. The word filter is universal unfortunately and will censor the word just about anywhere it can be written down on the site (It has always done this). I've exempt a few boards by changing the source code. PMs however are in a different area. I'm not sure I can use the same method for them. I'll have a look and see what options there are.

Thank you. This censor is very annoying, in fact, it turned a good night with a typo and improper grammar into a sexual compliment. Needless to say, I do not want a repeat of that. The person was very understanding and allowed me to explain what happened, however. Still, it's as pain in the but. You can't misspell as with two S's or it turns to Butt.

Oh don't get me started on how many times something used in a perfectly normal and acceptable way has been changed to 'wiener'  >:(  He wienered his rife, they wienered their head to the side, moby wiener (as in the whale)  the list just keeps going...
