Wireless routers.

I have been using a Linksys wireless router for about 8 years. It has worked flawlessly
till the last few days where it's starting to loose connection, and I have to turn it off and
back on to get it to work, even with a wired connection to my computer.

I am asking if Linksys is still a good brand to buy? If not any suggestions for another?

Linksys still has excellent reviews, personally though Iv always used Belkin due to cost factors and haven't had any issues...yet.

My network switch is a Linksys product, and it seems to be quite sturdy and reliable in my experience.  The fact that your last one has lasted so long is probably a good sign.

If you want to try something new, I have had okay experiences with Netgear and D-Link products, though each has had it's issues (Netgear tended to be problematic in the driver domain, while D-Link doesn't let you install custom firmware on most products, if you're into that sort of thing).

Thanks for the info. I think I will stay with Linksys. It's always worked well for me.

if the router is that old that might be the reason. those things wear out over time (we have Burnt through a few of them) so you could try buying a new one and see if that works.

My old router is working fine today,  it must know it's days are numbered. 

I was planning to upgrade my router anyway, so this was a good excuse
to do it.  I orded a refurbished one from amazon. Even comes with a 90 day
warranty.  Has a built in network server too. Not bad for $35. I gave $200 for
the old one.

Buy a Netgear one. They have a high output for distance, but it spreads the internets download and upload speed by a lot. So if you buy one that works at 5 feet, then you got max download, but 50+ feet and its less than half.

Thanks for the info. Turns out I don't need any range over 50ft. Mostly under 10ft.. I have a Kindle tablet
that works fine anywhere in my home. So I am doing good with the refurbished Linksys.

My old linksys worked pretty well over 600ft using an external antenna, but since I retired I don't need the long
range.

I just bought a 25ft Ethernet cable since I spend a lot of time fairly close to my router.  It's both faster and simpler when you live in a fairly small area.
