Has anybody seen any good movies latley?

I saw Van Helsing recently...though it wasn't exactly what I'd call a "good" movie.

To sum it up: the characters had no depth, and what semblance of a plot there was was unoriginal and quite predictable. On the plus side, the special effects were amazing, and the fighting was nicely co-ordinated and done well, though there was perhaps a little too much of it. And Dracula was beautiful.

Kinda wondering that myself but...meh, worries.    :)

I know it's probably been out for AGES and AGES in the US, but I recently went to see the remake if The Teaxs Chainsaw Massacre.
Don't know if you're into horror, but it's pretty darn good.
It's way darker and WAY more brutal then the original (the gore-factors pretty much on MAX    ).  Though I saw it as more of a sequal then a remake...the plot's a lot different, that's for sure.

But the original's still better in my book.   ;)

Def-inately not new... but I rented Amityville Horror a few weeks ago.  Still one of my favorites.

I dunno.  All of the best horror movies came out of the 70s (I think).  Then it just became crap after that... like the whole overdone nightmare on elm street/Friday the 13th/Whatever.  Now it seems like most horror movies are either just a cry for attention (Jeppers Creepers and what not ) or a stupid cookie-cutter teen horror flick that is so predictable.

I do admit.  Child's Play did freak me out when I was a kid.  When I first saw Dreamcatcher, it scared me too (because of those damn worms! )

The Shining is also one of my favorites (dunno when it was made, though).  Stephen King's Storm of the Century (made for TV movie was pretty good as well ).

Yep, I have to agree with ya. Definitely not as good as the previews made it seem. The acting was horrible, the storyline was way too choppy, but the special effects were pretty well done. :/

I really haven't seen other movies recently. :p Too much money...

Meh.  Just the same old plot.  Horrible evil rears it's head.  Human has to destroy terrible evil.  Human gets all sweaty and vanquishes evil.  I have no desire to see that movie... and Reign of Fire for the exact reason.

That's probably the biggest reason why I hated signs.  For once, I'd like to see a movie where the alien dosen't want to destroy the planet... isn't overly cute like ET, and dosen't turn out looking like some girl's father (**cough** Contact **cough**)

Haven't seen it.  I dunno, I guess Disney dosen't appeal to me as much as it did when I was a kid.

Though wouldn't stitch fall into the overly cute catergory?

Van Hellsing was awsome for it's genra and had more than the target audience was looking for. I agree that the plot was a little recycled and the characters lacked depth, but you must remeber the audience it was targeting is not looking for that. The movie was for those who wanted to see the amzing special effects in exciting fight scenes. If this were a spy thriller I'd a been angry and not giving good reviews, but it was an action movie with plenty of it so I'm pleased with what it brought. People are probably going to get all defensive at this but it's the truth and should be said at some point, if you want more than what your basic action movie offers don't go see an action movie then whine about the lack of depth. Me personaly, I do enjoy the occasional action movie but I prefer the spy movies because they bring more depth with my dose of action.
So now that I'm done venting, if you want to see a good action movie see Vanhellsing, I can't really say much about any other movies right now as I haven't been able to get out and see any. Although Troy looks like a good one.

I can't wait for that one to come out!

But the one I'm REALLY waiting for is the Fantastic Four movie (If I have class the day it comes out, I'm skipping it!;)

I'm a little biased because I grew up with the FF.

I, Robot
The Bourne Supremacy
Catwoman  (It's taken 19 years of my life for them to get around to this!?!?  It better be GOOD.)

That was a horrible movie. They went through just about every horror cliche in just the first twenty minutes, not to mention the fact that it wasn't even the least bit unnerving, and as you said completely predictable.

Quote

That is the only movie series that was ever able to scare me, though that was back when I was a kid. Now I actually find them quite humorous.
*Chucky knocks over another Good Guy doll*
*doll starts repeating the same phrase over and over* "I like to be hugged."
*Chucky grabs ceramic statuett and says "Hug this!*
*Chucky repeatedly smashes the other dol in the head untill the head is crushed*
or

*Chucky hides under the stairs with a big pole with a hook on the end. The father comes down the stairs, Chucky slips it through a slot and hooks one of his feet making him trip. The father is hanging upside down from the stair railing now and Chucky shows himself, still holding the pole*
*Chucky says, "How's it hangin, Phil?" and lets go of the pole and the guy snaps his neck on the ground*

I've actually been hearing about the Silent Hill movie for a few years now.  Seen as it's my favourite game and in-my-opinion the best survival-horror game I'll be very curious to see what they do with it.

I'm praying they'll stick to the plot and all the concepts of the game and not make it something like the Reisdent Evil movie.  It was a great idea to try and make it into a film, but does Milla Jovovich doing flying spin-kicks to heavy metal REALLY have anything to do with the original storyline of the game?   :?:

A good concept for the Silent Hill movie I think would be to go back seven years before the first game to where everything first started (when the "great fire" occured and Cheryl was created).  But myeh, just my thoughts.   :)

The Doom movie should be good to see as well.  But I think because video games are seen as just "games", many directors don't take them too seriously and try to just make 'big-budget hollywood blockbusters' out of them instead of giving them any real thought.

Whoops...got a little off-topic there.  My apologies.

Yeh, Donnie Darko is a brilliant film.  I bought it on DVD!
 (:

I don't like horror movies *shudder*

They made that Final Fantasy movie ages and ages ago, but that was a HUGE disappointment. Great games = rubbish embarassment of a film.

I want to see Shrek 2 :D If it's as good as the first one then I will be kinda surprised though

Am I the only person who liked the Final Fantasy movie better than FF8, FF9, and FF10?

I've heard talk (and talk, and talk) for years about turning Nine Princes in Amber into a movie, but I have doubts that they could do justice to that book by Zelazny.  As a counterpoint, A Night in the Lonesome October would make a great comedy/horror spoof.

About the only movies I am planning to see or am currently waiting for are:

ALIENS vs. Predator
Harry Potter 3
Dog Soldiers 2

But the ONE movie above all else that I wish somebody would make is a sequel to Top Gun. That movie rocked!

Ulario: Funny you should mention The Fantastic Four. I've never heard of any plans to come out with this movie this year or next. What I HAVE heard was a rumor years ago about a small production company that made a very low budget and cheesy FF movie years ago. I'm not exactly sure, but I thought I remembered seeing a FF movie video being sold at a dealer's table at the GenCon Game Fair convention back in 2002. I also know I remember seeing a long time ago a magazine article with pics of scenes from this same movie. I wish I had more to tell you but my mind is really foggy on all this. Sorry.  :p

The main purpose behind the Final Fantasy Movie, Final Fantasy - Spirits Within, was to see if they could make a two hour Cut Scene. Like the cut scenes from the final fantasy games. It's their first step towards making a game that looks like that.

Heh, yeah, I also really liked MK1. It had good fight scenes, good lines, and a good story that faithfully followed the first game. Mk2 did suck though. Horrible costumes (the cyber ninjas looked like they were made out of plastic, I literally cringe every time I see Scorpion's costume in that movie, and Sheeva, Baraka, Jade, and Shao Kahn's costumes were just bad), bad fight scenes (Sonya should not look like she's dancing when she snaps someone's neck), bad special effects, a story line that didn't really follow any of the game specifically, and, like you said Raust, they screwed up on characters (not only the cyber ninjas but also, the fact that Noob Saibot comes from Ermac's shadow was a new one on me). I'm glad I waited to see that one until it came on HBO. Well, at least they both had THE BEST techno song ever. MORTAL KOMBAAAT! Anyway, Hopefully, Mortal Kombat 3: Domination, will be better.

Enders game should remain a novel. A very good novel at that. I swear if they rip it appart and make it into crap... ugh... I will have little faith in them ever making a good movie from book again. As for FF7 Advent Children. I'm looking forward to it personally. Just so I can look at the girly sephy and squee a bit. Though I think they made him a bit too girly this time.

FF- The Spirits within did exactly what they were trying to do. They made it pretty and you have to admit... that was very pretty. Anyway it accually does have some basis on FF but only if you look very deeply. Try playing FF1 then watching the movie. You'll be surprised. Oh... and news for FF7 fans. Orrigonally they were going to revamp FF7's graphics to compete with 10's and release it with the american release of the movie but they scrapped it... silly squarenix... threw away lots of money.

Re-releasing Donnie Darko! SWEET! I love that movie! It's one of my all time favorites (and has a sweet fursuit on top of that).

They are probably Cashing in on Jake Gyllenhaal like they did with Ashton Kutcher and The Butterfly Effect (wasn't released before, but they waited 5 years before releasing it).

Also, I think I saw a ...... picture book ...... of Ender's Game. That story is not for little children! Knock it off! I'm just happy the main character shares my namesake ::drool:: (Well so does a tombstone so I really shouldn't get too excited).

As for Final Fantasy. You really should have known (if you didn't) that a movie like that (as well as VanHellsing) will probably have little in the way of plot, story development, and everything besides graphics and fights. So just go to a movie like that expecting little and enjoy yourself. Hell, Hellsing had quite a number of good zingers in it!

I saw a trailer for "I, Robot" ... other than very superficial resemblences to Asimov's work, it's definately not his style.  But it looks as though it will be a decent movie anyway, so I'm going to try and see it.

I saw Prisoner of Azkaban on Monday. (Yes, we get it earlier than you US people do.)

*Warning: spoilers ahead for those who have not read the book*

It was good. Not as disappointing as the first two. The acting of the three main characters has improved, though is still noticably weak in some places. Lupin was...not how I imagined him to be, at all. He seemed rather goofy, awkward, and though he appeared to be very pleasant and kind, he didn't feel it. Sirius Black, on the other hand, I have no qualms at all with. I have heard many a girl loudly voice their disappointment at how "un-fit" Black is, and at this I can only roll my eyes in disgust. Sirius Black, for a wanted criminal who had just walked out of Azkaban having spent 12 (?) years in there, looked -perfect-. And Snape, as usual...was delicious. *Smirks*

As for the CGI characters...I was extremely impressed by Buckbeak; less so with the werewolf. The hippogryph was believeable. Its anatomy was superb - the horse hind and bird fore was combined in such a way to make it look completely natural and not at all awkward. It was beautifully animated; the little croons and clacks of the beak, the way the feathers moved, it was all perfect. The werewolf, on the other hand...lets just say it looked like a bald rat. I always pictured werewolves as bigger, stronger, and definitely hairier than the wolf in the film. It looked as if they had spent their time concentrating on Buckbeak at the expense of the wolf. The dementors and Sirius Black's dog form were nicely done, and though they were not as impressive as Buckbeak by far, but I had no problems with them.

They cut a lot from the book that I would have liked to see in, and made some changes that I was not altogether comfortable with. The ending was weak and a little unsatisfactory, and they spent too much time on unecessary parts (such as the bus ride) that could have been better spent on more useful and significant parts of the story.

But, despite all my criticisms, I enjoyed it very much. Enough to book tickets to see it again this coming Thursday. If anyone has seen it already and has a different opinion to voice, I would be interested to hear it.

From what I've seen from the hippogriff, I agree with you.  The only thing taht bothers me about him are the front legs.  Too equine, and it seems almost unnatural.

I thought the forelegs worked very well. The avian legs on gryffins have always bothered me because most of the time when people draw them it just looks too anatomically unrealistic to me. But in the movie they were adapted in such a way as to retain some of the avain feel and appearance, but still work anatomically and maintain a sense of realism.

He could have done with a pair of ears, though.

I must be weird then.  I seem to be the only person that gives my gryphons human shoulders/arms.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind?

Looks pretty good.  Written by the same guy who wrote Being John Malkovich so it should be very odd and quirky.

I just saw Chronicles of Riddick last Friday and it was awesome.  Riddick is one of the coolest characters ever IMO.

Also saw Harry Potter 3 the week before and it was really cool, too.  My coven went as a group (well, most of us) and dressed up in our black robes and pointed hats (we don't USUALLY wear the hats, though, lol.)

Saw Shrek 2 a little over a week ago. It was absolutely hilarious. And I just saw Chronicles of Riddick on Friday. I suppose it was entertaining (probably could've waited this one out as a rental), though I must confess its prequel, "Pitch Black", was much better. A lot of the Necromonger dialogue sounded corny.

I've seen Harry Potter 3 and I agree with all off you on the Hippogriff. It was awsome looking. Made me wish I could fly on one. Lupin was a big dissapointment though. He didn't look that much like a wolf at all. I also seen troy and I liked it. Having read the Illiad, I found it made me understand the epic more. A great storyline, the trojan war.
I am considering seeing Shrek 2, Two Brothers, and Garfield.

I hope their worth the money.

I just got back from Chronicles of Riddick, and I was very impressed  by how good it actually was. Since I saw Van Helsing, I've been pretty weary of seeing another hyped up sci-fi movie, but a bunch of my friends were going, so my pessimism aside, I saw it anyways. All I can say is...Wow. Great plot, great acting, no characters trying to be overly funny in serious situations *coughvanhelsingcough*, and it did very well keeping an underlying realistic feeling amidst the futuristic themes.

I would definitely recommend seeing it if you're into sci-fi/fantasy movies (as I am), and even if you're not, I would still say catch a matinee, or at least rent it.

In relation to all the recent flops:

Mmmmm, thats good satire.

Really, I'm not looking forward to anything. The age of inspiring movies has come and passed. These are the days of the mass produced for the uncaring mass audience with too much time and money to spend.

I'd almost call it the gilded age of cinemaphotography. With all its stunning CGI and pretty faces - yet talentless acting /  writing / etc.

Whenever money is availible, I may buy the kill bill series or chronicles of riddick. But I'm much more interested in classics like fritz the cat / heavy metal series.

much more so interested in getting american pop, though.

A lot of people seem really disappointed with lupin. A friend of mine, said that the movie ruined her image of the character. He was supposed to be a werewolf... wasnt he?
