Computer Specs!
« on: January 08, 2006, 01:47:19 pm »
After searching through the forums, I was surprised that nobody ever asked about this... even in the Furry Tech Talk community. Computers are basically a necessity nowadays (hence why one of my majors is computer science) and well, I'm curious as to what people use. '<img'>

Here are my specs:

=====

Note: I've removed the benchmarks since after more testing, I've determined that my system will not bench accurately for some odd reason. ':p'

I didn't bother with 3DMark2005 since it is not really suitable for current generation systems; maybe in another year or so will it be more useful.

And here I thought that 7800 owners didn't bother with 3DMark05 because Nvidia's drivers have been breaking 3DMark05 for quite a while ':p' (it's been a while since I read that though... and I don't have a 7800 anyway)
Anyway, I challenge your minimum scores by using my Cyrix 586 with no RAM and a Tseng Labs ET6100!... oh wait... you meant go higher, not lower >_>

Anyway, my aging box
OS: Windows XP Professional w/SP2
CPU: Intel P4-2.4GHz (18x133MHz)
Mobo: ASUS P4PE
RAM: 1.5GB PC2700 (some random brand *shrugs*)
Graphics: nVidia Geforce 6800GT (Gainward)
HDD: 2xSeagate 120GB; 1xSeagate 80GB
DVD: Samsung SH-W162C
Monitor: 19" CRT (18" viewable)

I haven't benchmarked it in ages...
So, yeah... I'm sure everybody has a better computer than me '' (or not... '<img'> )

I LAUGH at the mere suggestion that I do not have the most outclassed computer in these forums. (I'd say the world, but I know someone who actually has to run AIM v1.)

OS: Windows XP SP2

CPU: Intel Celeron Processor currently clocking in at an astounding: *checks system control panel* 429MHz!!

RAM: 512 MB (I had to STEAL this from my mom's computer. She is now the one with 128MB, and still wonders why her compy is so slow. Then again, my dad is the one in IT...)

Graphics: Intel 82810-DC100 Graphics Controller (Can't even display 32-bit color.) (*Sudden realization* Hey, whats the point of 32-bit, anyway? Isn't it more colors than the human eye can discern(sp?)?)

CD Drive: Thanks to a forceful persuasion of my father, the only semi-modern piece of equipment is this TSST Corp "Writemaster" CD/DVDW SH-W162Z

Hard Drive: 40GB Maxtor 6E040L0

Monitor: Three words:
NOT

FLAT

SCREEN

(No further implications of its bad quality and oldness are nessecary.)

This signature was full of dead links from 2006, so here's a new one! It's not very exciting :<

My dad's computer

My understanding is this...
32-bit graphics are three 8-bit colour channels (red, green and blue) with an 8-bit alpha channel for transparency

Which is only 16 million colours and, much like the 30 frames per second idea, that's just the level at which it's difficult to tell the difference.

Digital camera RAW files, for example, use 12 or 16 bit colour channels instead of 8.

I'm building my own computer now :-)
Right now I have all the visible parst:
Case: Antec NSK-4400
Monitor: Neovo F417 (17")
Keyboard & mouse: Logitech comfort cordless desktop **loves split-key design**

So now it's just the actual computer '<img'> I'm thinking of this:
Core 2 Duo E6300
Motherboard: not entirely sure yet, as cheap as possible ':p' Probably either Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 or Asus P5LD2-VM v.II But I don't know much about motherboards so…
Hard disk: will probably be Hitachi, SATA II, 160GB
Videocard: still looking, GeForce 7300GT or something similar
CD/DVD: one read-everything, burn-everything drive - haven't chosen a specific one yet
Memory: Corsair DDR2 1024MB 667MHz Dual channel kit (2x 512MB)

And last but not least, OS! That's definitely settled, I've got 5 Linux distros burned to disk '<img'>

Gentoo (curious to try out)
Slackware (ditto)
Mandriva 2007 (free DVD with Linux Magazine)
SUSE 10.1 (ditto)
And as my main OS, Ubuntu 6.10… I simply love Synaptic '<img'>

All this to replace my slowly-aging eMac, cause I hardly use OSX anymore… and no matter what they say about Linux being platform-independent, there's just too many little bugs and irritations on PPC…

This is my second computer which I got from a friend's dad who had a bunch of old ones lying around. My first exploded after my dad decided to use oil to silence the fan (yes, he knows nothing about computers).

- OS: Windows 98 second edition ( '<img'> )
- System:
Trademark computer (not sure which model...but it's very...wide)
GenuineIntel Pentium 2 processor
- 96.0 MB RAM
- 4 disk drives:
Disk 1: 2.77 GB
Disk 2: 1.11 GB
Disk 3: 12.6 GB (my game/large program drive)
Disk 4: 867 MB
- Monitor: CTX color something-or-another width (dragged back from a garage sale)
- External Memorex CD burner
- Microsoft wheel mouse
- Nimble keyboard

I hate this piece of junk...

So much cuteness, it's creepy.

Heh, well, i dont have anything very special, but i have done some upgrades. And most recently, an upgrade from 256mb memory to 512. Very much needed. i can now do the multitastking i love to do without it going into stop-motion, for lack of a better way to say it. XD

Hp Pavillion 533w (at least, thats the Case)
OS; Windows XP Home.
Motherborad; some cheap thing with the sound card and graphics built-in. *shrugs* sorry i just am not shure what is the actuall model, and never botherd to check.
Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz processor.
60gig factory HD, and a 20 gig HD i added later. So 80gigs.
512mb memory.
17inch HP regular CRT monitor that came with the machine.

Umm, cant really think of anything else, but i did replace the factory CDrom/burner ect. drive with a super-fast one that would even burn DVDs. But i reformatted my computer and lost the disk. So i can use it for programs an stuff but not to brun. Oh well.

And that's about it.

Mine is rather pathetic in comparison to you guys. I have a dell (It did come free, at least!'<img'> so that has limited my upgrade options a bit.

1024 mb of ram (2x512mb)
2.4g pentium proccesor
128mb vid card (In the PCI slot, these piece-o-crap dells dont have AGP slots. The built-in vid card was 54mb)

60gig internal hard drive, two partitions (win 98 and XP, 98 is buggy for some reason)
80gig external hard drive (so useful!'<img'>

Netgear wireless card (routed from old downstairs comp)

DVD/CD-ROM drive (Yay for watching serenity on my computer!'<img'>
No floppy drive '<img'>
Wireless mouse using PS/2 to USB adapter since the USB feed kept getting interrupted by something else, causing the mouse to cut out.
Factory keyboard
Factory LCD monitor
Factory Speakers

All hooked up to a surge-protector/power outlet router thingy from the early 90's (hey, it works!'<img'>

If you want all the fancy specifications, well, you aint gonna get em, cause i have no clue.

I'm running my Gateway NX860XL.
Lets see, it has... ':?:'

2.0 GHz Core Duo
80GB 7200 rpm HD
Go 7900 GS Graphics
17" 1680x1050 WSXGA panel
2x1GB 667 GHz RAM
Bluetooth AGB wireless card
8x DVD burner combo drive

...not bad for $1800 nearly 10 months ago.

And a 320GB 7200 rpm external HD.
