Title: openDNS blocking furtopia
Post by: Wox on October 11, 2012, 12:31:34 pm
So recently one of my parents enabled openDNS to block porn, and phishing, and things of the sort, and now i've found myself hacking into the router to disable certain features... Does anyone know why openDNS is blocking furtopia for pornography?

Okay, so I had a bunch of other stuff typed out, and then I found that their site has a domain checker, so you can see what the sites are tagged as.

So, I did a quick check.

Sadly, the site is currently categorized as Pornography. And actually, that's the only category that is currently approved for it. The other three (Chat, Adult Themes, Message Board), are all just awaiting votes at this point.

I'm not really sure there's much that can be done, really. OpenDNS has categorized the site based on a stereotype about the topic of a site, without really looking into it to see that it is a family-friendly site, and that the label isn't really warranted.

I see that on their site, there is a button to flag the site for review. It's possibly that the label could be removed. But you have to be a member to do that. And somehow I doubt that they would seriously review something that was flagged by one member who just joined, and who hasn't done anything else on their site at all before. It's a glimmer of hope that it could theoretically be changed...

The community reputation precedes us...

I think I remember  that. Even through I am single I did not want to  look at any porn or if I had guest. I wonder Furtopia was on the porn list because the  existence of the adult topic section.

I wonder Furtopia was on the porn list because the  existence of the adult topic section.

It's possible. Unfortunately, I really don't think they would take the time to really look at the site and evaluate it by itself. Granted, a guest can only see the Adult Filter link at the top, I guess that could be enough to tip the scales? They just don't look into the actual function of it to see that guests can't see that part of the forums, and that the default is to have it disabled as well.

Similarly, they did have it marked as a chat as well, likely due to the ChatRoom link.

So, yeah, I could see the mere mention of having an adult filter as the reason it would be marked as such. Either that, or whoever voted/approved the tag simply saw the topic of the forum and made an assumption.

The adult section isn't visible to guests or members under 18. My guess would be that the sub forums and web hosting we used to have contributed to it. Adult material was available to see on those to "anyone" as it were. Now they're gone we don't have any material that should list it as an Adult as far as I'm aware.

Furtopia used to do web hosting and there were adult artists' sites hosted by furtopia, which could very easily be the reason why we got tagged.

Hate to be the killjoy...but yeah.

Well, I've got it hidden deep in the router as whitelisted, so unless someone who really knows what they're doing comes along, there's no way for it to be unwhitelisted... thanks for your help, guys  :D
