ART CONTEST WINNERS!
Jan. 21, 2003
1. This is WhiteShepherd here and I would personally like to thank all the great Furs who participated in Furtopia's first Art Contest. There were so many wonderful art pieces but each Staff was only permitted to vote on 3 pieces of artwork. The Furtopia Staff judges in this contest were WhiteShepherd, Kada-Ru, Benjamin and Son of Earth.
First Place: 34 points is "Christmas in the Valley" by HollyAnn
COMMENTS:
Son of Earth - This piece captures the child-like innocence and spirit of the Christmas season. What made this piece work was the coloring skill.
Benjamin - Very cute. I could see something like this being used as artwork in a professional printer's Christmas card set. The quality and soft colour usage really works.
WhiteShepherd - This picture was just warm and wonderful. The soft colors and the cute well made kid expressions really made the theme of the picture work for me. Very well done!
Kada-Ru - I chose this one as my #1 choice because it just looks so peaceful and it does give me a warm feeling of the season.
Second Place (we actually have a tie): 17 points is "Hummer Girl" and "Zoxy" both by Sumarra.
COMMENTS:
Son of Earth- "Zoxy" It's not the drawing skill that grabbed me. It was the raw emotion and intensity of the pose. It reminds of "The Rite of Spring". Keep up the good work. I hope you show more.
Benjamin - "Hummer Girl" The subject works very well with it's setting in this composition. More importantly, I like how she drew the wings/arms on the character. It's an interesting way to solve the problem of having an avian and yet subtly including hands incorporated with it's wings. Good work.
Third Place: 8.5 points is "Fur Park" by FireStorm.
COMMENTS:
Son of Earth - I had to laugh out loud when I saw this. Those huge eyes, those tiny bodies, those big heads. What a hoot! Nice bit of satire of a satire. Excellent.
Other artwork that was submitted.
"Angel Mouse" by Mousira.
COMMENTS:
Benjamin - Having earned my BA in Fine Arts, I've had my share of art history classes cluttering my memory. This particular piece makes me think of the illumination you'd find in a medieval hand-written bible that was created in the Celtic or Anglo Saxon regions. The simple, flat style is reminiscent of the cloisonne drawing style that the Celts had loved to use, immitating the linear qualities and colours of their jewellery and other such items. I'm also an admin on a medieval furry MUCK, so this appeals to me. If you were to develop this style further, do some research in Celtic art, and so on, you could probably produce some fascinating bits of artwork.
"Ouch" by Kamune.
COMMENTS:
Kada-Ru - Now, I could have chosen the artwork with the best coloration and the best everything but this time I went for how the art piece grabbed me. That is why I voted on this piece. I could feel the pain the little fellow was feeling from the broken bat as I looked at the stars around his poor head!
"Dragon-ness" by DraconianDancer.
COMMENTS:
Kada-Ru - Now, I could have chosen the artwork with the best coloration and the best everything but this time I went for how the art piece grabbed me. That is why I voted on this piece. I have awaken many a mornings feeling all messed up and I'm sure my mind looked just like that!
