Whats a good laptop for digital art?
« on: May 11, 2014, 03:04:54 pm »
Hey there. I know I've already asked for advice on a pc build but I realized  that a desk top pc wouldn't really be  feasible at this point. So I'm looking for a good laptop. any suggestions?

$1000.00 or lower would be my price range. I could go a little higher but i would prefer to stay at 1000 or below.

If money weren't an issue i'd go with: http://shopap.lenovo.com/mm/en/laptops/thinkpad/w-series/w530/#tab-features

But if you're in the 1000 and below range i'd focus on getting a laptop with an excellent processor and at least an okay graphics card.  Get an LED backlit screen. (not just a regular lcd screen.) An SSD will make loading massive programs like photoshop go a lot faster.

Avoid dell.

If you have any extra left over then you can use it on a good tablet.  Wacom Intuos vs bamboo makes a huge difference.

That Lenovo is overkill for anything less than industrial 3D rendering ;)

What sort of software will you be looking at using on it?

It might be worth going for a high end CPU without a discrete GPU.

Overkill,   yes,   but good luck finding color correction like that on anything else.   xD

Also, As odd as it may sound,   my old t61 and my t400 both had issues with some of the stuff i was doing in illustrator.   Only my desktop was able to handle it.    ^.~

my 2009 macbook pro runs sketchbookexpress pretty well and that program seems pretty nice for drawing, i just need to work on drawing :/

tho this thing was around $2K but that's from 5 years ago so you might be able to find a cheaper one.

Yep. I use a core i5 processor for gaming, so it should easily be sufficient :)

Avoid HP laptops... they have lots of problems and they are prone to overheating. Especially avoid dell..

Would this be sufficient? Acer Aspire V5-552G-X852. It has an AMD Quad-Core A10-5757M Accelerated Processor and the graphics are AMD Radeon HD 8750M Graphics. Would that run the afore mentioned programs sufficiently?

It seems the screens colour reproduction is pretty bad on that. Not helpful for what you want. The best I can find right now that has good colour reproduction for the price you'd like it this: Lenovo W530

All the laptops that have an IPS screen (good colour reproduction on those) are over $1k. That lenovo seems pretty good at the reproduction for non IPS.

Have to see if anyone else can find something.

If your just using art software like gimp, Illustrator, or photoshop. It shouldn't
take a really high end computer. I started using photoshop on a window's 95
computer 18 years ago with a 120 pentium with 32megs of memory. That's
with a drawing tablet too. Of course computers have come a long way since.

I would say spend your money on good software and a tablet. I think most any
computer capable of running windows 7 and at least two gig of memory should
be adaquate for the job.

With a laptop be sure to get a good hires display. That's the window to your work.
