I am indeed of Polish heritage and have had numerous friendly encounters with mink. They roam the rivers and streams here and one actually romped up to me to sniff my shoe while I was inspecting my company's wastewater lagoons. When between jobs and strolling the local riverwalk a mated pair showed themselves to me and I was able to coax them toward me. The radio I was listening to caused them to back off though. My Mom did not believe me until a local newspaper story told of mink stealing bait during the local ice fishing tournament.
Residents were advised to not pet any mink.

More recently, one of the water weasels set off my backyard trailcam . The throat patch is always a positive ID.
