Title: What kind of languages do you speak?
Post by: Mylo on February 24, 2012, 12:07:23 am
Me?  English only...but I hope to change that in the coming years :)
What about you all?  Do we have any bilinguals, trilinguals, etc?

I'm fluent in English.  I can get my point across in Spanish at the cost of making myself look like an idiot in the process.  I'm taking ASL I this semester, though I don't technically speak the language (this thread's title is a tad overspecific).

English, and I can get understood in German. I wouldn't say I'm fluent at it, but I knew enough to cope in Germany for two weeks.

English is my primary language, but there are several other languages in which I have some kind of understanding.
Such as limited conversational German, French, Russian, Spanish, and Japanese
And I know some bits and pieces of Finnish, Armenian, and a few others.

Although I’m not really confident enough, or skilled enough to talk in any language other than English.
And it’s only in text and writing that I’m actually able to do anything with other languages, however limited that may be.

Only English. I studied a bit of Japanese years ago, and can pick out certain words and phrases, but am far from fluent. (:
I'm really interested in learning French and German!

I know English, and that is it.
I can figure out some Spanish if the person is speaking really slowly, or if I am reading and have a dictionary to use. Though, I would love to learn Russian (and plan to try very hard to do so). I simply find it a rather interesting language to hear and see.

Language is very hard for me, including English (I bumble my way through spoken English most of the time, but can read and write exceptionally well - to compensate, I guess). x_x
The sad thing is, my father is fluent in both English and Spanish, is working to become fluent in Japanese. He can also a fair amount of French and German, as well as Icelandic to a much smaller degree.

English is my primary language of course, I took spanish back in high school, middle school, and a year of elementary, although I'm a bit rusty... I can understand spanish but I can't really speak it back anymore

Planning on learning Japanese later this year though, always wanted to learn it

English

I wanted to learn German in high school, but my mother said it would be too difficult for me and she pressured me to take Spanish instead.  :P Now 20 years later, I've pretty much forgotten all the Spanish I've learned.

I speak English and conversational Spanish. I'm pretty rusty though. I used to live in Miami and learned a lot there, but then I forgot a bunch of it when I moved and just wasn't exposed to it. I'd love to relearn it!

IBM Code page 437 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_437).  Fluently.  With a little bit of PETSCII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PETSCII) thrown in for good measure...

O.K., O.K., computer jokes aside if you haven't guessed already I speak American English.  Big surprise, right?  Incidentally, everyone has their own personal strengths and weaknesses, and one of my many weaknesses happens to be learning to speak foreign languages.  I could always pick up computer languages with relative ease, but when it came to taking French in high school I was an absolute disaster at it.  I could figure out how to read and write French to some degree, but speaking it and understanding what was spoken to me was a whole other matter entirely!  Honestly, I don't know how I was able to pass French I and French II-- I guess my performance on the written exams was just barely enough to keep me afloat because whenever I was asked an oral question by my teacher my stock answer was always "Je ne sais pas!"   :D

On a more interesting note, last summer I was actually able to pick up reading Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics well enough to actually read some real Ancient Egyptian stone tablets to some degree.  Those of you who are familiar with my writings on the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 2 Discussion thread (http://forums.furtopia.org/index.php?topic=42340.0) on this forum know that I absolutely love to deeply analyze things, and that I tend to take that task very seriously.  In this case, I wanted to come up with an authentic Ancient Egyptian name for an Ancient Egyptian fictional anthro character that I was designing.  When all of the lists of Ancient Egyptian names that I could find proved to not yield a name that was satisfactory for me, I decided that I would create my own authentic name.  I learned from my research that Ancient Egyptian as a language was related to Hebrew, and just like with many Hebrew-derived names, Ancient Egyptian names could be made from phrases, such as my own real-life Hebrew-derived name "Daniel," which means "God is my judge."  So I set out to make my own custom-tailored Ancient Egyptian phrase-name to suit my character, however before I could I had to learn how to actually make a phrase in Ancient Egyptian correctly, which involved learning vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, feminine suffixes, etc.  Three Hieroglyphic-to-English dictionaries, many instructional websites, and a week of practice later and not only was I able to come up with a phrase-name for my character in properly rendered Ancient Egyptian, but I was able to read some of the photographed authentic Ancient Egyptian tablets that were provided by some hobbyist Egyptology websites to test my reading ability on.  I thought that my being able to actually read something that was written thousands of years ago was very cool, and I was quite pleased with myself at the time.  Of course it's not like you can find a way to use the ability to read Hieroglyphics everyday, so I have probably forgotten 90% of what I had learned already, but I suppose that I could always try to pick it up again if I ever really needed to.  And the name that I came up with my character?  Well, that's going to remain a "sheta" (Hieroglyphic Transliteration "StA," meaning "secret") until I have finally settled on her final design and have drawn and published her!   :)

Mostly proper english littered with both Australian and British slang. I was taught some indonesian in primary school, a year of japanese too long ago to have been any use, but I've picked up a few bits and pieces since, learnt 3 years of french in secondary school. I've also picked up some german, russian and spanish but that's more for understanding than speaking.

And now I'm working on learning 'cant' language of the 1700s.

English and just a touch of German.

This. I wanted to learn Spanish until I started taking it in school, but even though I now hate it (and remember basically none of the lessons even as I do them) I'm sticking with it because I don't want my desire to learn German to be killed in the same manner.

I speak English, a little German, and even littler Spanish and French. I understand all those languages far better than I speak them, though oddly not at the same time (eg I'll be watching Kommissar Rex when an ad comes on and everyone's suddenly speaking gibberish - then I realise the ads are actually in English x_x).

Apart from English, I'm able to speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and Welsh although not fluently. Nevertheless, here's one way to make use of the Welsh language (take that for example): http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7409392

German is actually easier than other languages, if English is your first language. English has Germainic roots, so there are a ton of cognates

I only fully speak English. Yo hablo un poco espaniol. (I speak a little Spanish.) I really want to learn German. It sounds awesome when others speak it, and yes Kael is right. There are a lot of similarities between English and German. Unfortunately, my small town High School doesn't offer German. we used to offer French two years ago, but now there's only Spanish. :'( Maybe I can take German in college. :D

I have a slightly similar problem.  When I hear a language I don't know, it sometimes sounds to me like a word salad of every language I *do* know, with a handful of random syllables thrown in.  For example, when I was learning South American countries and capitals in high school Spanish class, I initially heard "Caracas, Venezuela" as "Krawks (http://www.pinkpt.com/neodex/index.php/Krawk) us in escuelsa." (escuela -> Spanish for school).  The things I "hear" when I overhear a foreign language are similarly ridiculous.  Also, I'll sometimes be reading or listening to something that I think is in Spanish only to realize that it was actually in Portuguese.

In school, I was good at languages and bad at everything else.

Je suis toute bilingue entre anglais et français.  8)

English is my native language, I'm fluent in French, can speak enough Spanish to be functional, a tiny bit of Japanese and a tiny bit of Swedish.

Finnish is my mother tongue, I can speak English and I know a little Russian, French, Spanish, Swedish, Japanese, Estonia and German.

Mais je ne suis pas très bon à la langue и я хотел бы лучше. Förhoppningsvis, kan du fortfarande förstå mig.

Fruent Engrish is my native tongue (also sometimes known as Australian  (:)

but i have a question that i put forward on IRC a while ago...

HOW EASY IS ENGLISH AS A LANGUAGE TO LEARN?
I grew up around it so that doesn't count, but for all those who have learned it or are learning it as a second language. tell me, is it hard?
personally I'd say it's a pretty stupid language in a lot of ways with all the complicities.

it's classified as a level 2 language, same level as german. Spanish and french are, i think, level ones, while Russian and Yiddish are level 3's. So not as hard as others, but definitely difficult.

If you have the resources to do so, you might consider taking Spanish as a class at a community college.  This could be workable if you are in the workforce (take it as an evening class by itself) or are still in college (take it as an elective in whatever school you're attending).

Knowing any foreign language (especially a commonly used one such as Spanish) could be of value for future job searches, and it seems possible that Spanish in particular might have a special significance to you.

Do you have a link to a website that discusses these "levels" you speak of?  I tried looking for such a site around the time you made that post, but I wasn't able to find what I was looking for ("level" seemed to be used primarily for difficulty level *within* a language, for example Spanish II) and I forgot to ask about it since then.
