Pony references for the older crowd
« on: September 17, 2011, 03:03:40 pm »
It's been mentioned several times there there's a lot of references in the FiM series that are aimed to times gone by. Be it musical influences, jokes, etc. I'm curious how many of these could be pointed out and where are they? For example:

Friendship is Magic Part 2 @ 7:45 in, Pinky Pie's song. Twighlight's reaction is because of the groaner songs in earlier cartoons

Ticket Master @ 17:30 and Bird in the Hoof @ 16:10 Benny Hill style chase scenes

I know I've seen many others, but can't think of where they were off hoof.

Spike floating and using his tail like a propeller when he's infatuated with Rarity. I can't pinpoint what cartoon that would have been from, but I know I've seen similar things in other classic toons.

Rarity's song "Art of the Dress" being taken from the much older musical by Stephen Soundheim's Dinner with George "Stitching it Together".

When Derpy drops the pile'o stuff on Twilight in Feeling Pinkie Keen, that's classic Warner Bros./MGM toonage right there.
It's Steely Dan, not Steely Dan't

Almost that entire episode is a callback to the old loony tunes in just how off-the-wall it is. Twilight being in bandages, all the stuff that happens to her throughout the episode, even her bursting into flames of rage is practically a "Wild taake" like the toons of old always did.

Don't forget sneaking around in a bush. Pretty classic. Also when spike tries to help and his legs are too short.

Can't remember the episode, but they were watching a comet show or something and Spike fell into the punch bowl and they made the Spiked Punch joke.

In Boast Busters when Twilight is floating the water tower and milks all the cows there is a tiny line where a cows says "Call me".

There's also the mention of "Huffy the Magic Dragon" in Owls well that Ends well and Spikes Donut line in The Best Night Ever.
"Hey Pony Joe, another donut."
"I think you've had enough..."
"Another donut! Extra sprinkles!"

Swarm of the Century: "Rainbow Dash, you distract them! Everyone else, we'll build an exact replica of Ponyville over there!"

A throwback to Blazing Saddles, where the bad guys are distracted...and then directed to an exact replica of the town!

That same episode has Rainbow Dash controlling a tornado, when it starts to go out of control sshe screams "I can't hold it! She's breaking up!"

A line made famous by Scotty on the original Star Trek.

In Griffon the Brush-off when Pinkie Pie is chasing Rainbow Dash, shes bouncing around like Pepe Le Pew and just like him she's twice as fast as the one she's chasing.

Didn't Marty McFly say that line in "Back to the Future, Part 2" movie? I'm pretty sure he did.

You're correct, but also from Midnight Cowboy. I'd link to it, but has a bit of swearing in the scene, so not really appropriate. Careful if you go hunting it down.

Going back to the Star Wars references, i was just waatching the first episode and I noticed that when NMM shows up the background music sounds VERY close to the music that plays for Darth Vader, especially when Twilight says "I know who you are! You're the mare in the moon! Nightmare Moon!" and then the music almost sounds identical to Vaders theme.

I about fell out of my chair when the ending scene of s2 ep 2 started.  I kept saying to myself, "No, they're not really doing this, are they?"  They were.

Someone needs to cut up FiM episodes and set them to the Star Wars movies.  :D

I am contractually obliged to state that Fluttershy is the best pony.

So how you everypony cast the roles for a MLP/SW cross over PMV? The unicorns would have to be the Jedi I'm thinking, since they come with horns that can be modified to glow like lightsabres. But lets run down a few princible characters:

Princess Leah:
Darth Vader:
Luke Skywalker:
Obi Wan (Ben):
Han Solo:
Chewbaca:
C3PO:
R2D2:

Grand Moff Tarkin:
Uncle Owen:
Aunt Beru:
Greedo:
Jawas:
Tusken Warriors:
Storm Troopers:
Rebel Soldiers:
The Modul Nodes:
Mos Eisley Spacers:
Imperial Officers:

Here is my picks

Princess Leah: Fluttershy
Darth Vader: Nightmare Moon
Luke Skywalker: Twilight Sparkle
Obi Wan (Ben): Apple Jack
Han Solo: Rainbow Dash
Chewbaca: Rarity
C3PO: Spike
R2D2: Pinkie Pie

Grand Moff Tarkin: Clyde Pie
Uncle Owen: Sheriff Silverstar
Aunt Beru: Berry Punch
Greedo: Gilda
Jawas: Cutie Mark Crusaders
Tusken Warrior: Zecora
Storm Troopers: Canterlot Royal Guard
Tie Fighter Pilots: The Shadowbolts
Rebel Soldiers: Ponyville Ponies
Rebel Pilots: The Thunderbolts
The Modul Nodes: Octavia and the Gala Band
Mos Eisley Spacers: Clousdale Ponies
Imperial Officer: Hoity Toity
Deathstar: Tom
