Title: Technologically using a different body
Post by: aspect on December 11, 2011, 01:48:33 am
This story has a neat note at the end about developing a so-called "wearable robot" which is an entire prosthetic body:

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=cant-touch-this-feeling

The goal is that you would control it and feel its senses as if they were your own. Obviously inhabiting a different body is something many of us would be interested in, so I thought I'd ask how people feel about this way of achieving it.

Besides the neat possibility of learning what it feels like to be in a differently shaped body, it would also be great for making characters real... like a very advanced sort of puppetry.

I want in on this when it comes out... and being a hopeful in the video game industry, this adds a whole new world to explore in it... actually immersing yourself into a world... *eyes get a far-off look and he stares into the distance*

Moved to the Non-furry Discussion forum as the topic doesn't seem furry.

Topic doesn't seem furry eh? Well in my head the topic was 'what do y'all think of this potential alternative to fursuits' but I suppose I didn't say that :)

Regardless of where the topic is located...This is a fantastic concept. It makes me excited to see the kind of technology and advances we'll see in my lifetime. I feel like Fursuiting has been using a lot of the old-school tricks of the trade used in special effects for movies without CG, and I see more people moving from simple costume and puppetry to animatronics at the moment;

But I remember awhile back, the post about the neko ears that responded to brain waves, and the implications this might have for Furs. These brain-response technologies seem like they could be the new mediums for ears, tails, and partial or full suits! Albeit very expensive mediums unless the technology becomes commonplace many years down the line.

Then again, I think there's a resurgence in using actors in films, even for CG parts, and blending this with costume close-ups, so maybe hollywood will start to use this technology in the future and it will get passed to us that way. /End babbling

Well isn't it possible to buy a brainwave video game controller headband fairly affordably? Theyre not all that dependable or easy to use from what ive read but combine that with a wearable computer and an motorized tail and a bit of programming, and you'd probably get at least something you could slowly wag.  :P But what this has me contemplating is robotic puppetry. I wouldn't need my whole body as sensory equipment to control an animal, it could be more like a hand puppet that can walk away from me. Make the back legs automatic but hook the forelegs to two of my fingers' movements (cats don't really consciously control their hind legs when walking). Use other fingers for various other muscles. Do some sort of sensory feedback right on my hand. Add a camera feed to my computer screen and I bet it would feel very much like trying out another body, after a little adjustment.

No way to simulate inner ear motion sense though...

I'm actually a bit more excited as to how this could be applied to things like virtual reality, games, movies and such. :P Besides things like paralyzed people and such. That's obviously very big news.

That's what I was so fascinated about with Avatar.  It'll only be a few hundred years or so :)
Maybe not even that long!

There is a pretty cool movie called "surrogates" that shows the negative impact of this potential technology. Although I must say being able to switch bodies would be awesome!

I was about to say the same thing.

It's an interesting idea but I'd prefer something more permanent. I've wanted to get out of this human skin ever since I was very young. Not temporarily as having a "robotic suit" would be. I'd want it to be permanent. Having my brain implanted in a robotic anthropomorphic dog body would be nice.

What I picture is that some people would spend all or most of their time 'inhabiting'... Which could cause health problems I guess, though controlling the robot would probably be good exercise.

... If bodies became completely swappable, in our current society at least I think there would be problems because most people wouldn't own their own bodies, they'd be making payments on them.

Waithing for the medical recovery implication of these concepts.

This also makes me think of the Gangers from the latest season of Doctor Who.

The technology described in the link is something I've been following for some time, as a subset of the field is where I eventually want to do research. As an azarian (as defined as a class of mind fitting various parameters), freely jumping from body to body is not a strange notion to me at all, in any way or form, and is in fact a required specification for the capabilities of a completed phase 1 azarian society.

Oh, that is true. But Gangers were temporary, and not meant to be more than duplicates. Still, I loved those two episodes. :)

Wow, where can I read more about that?

And of course I wish you well in your research. :)

Ok, just read this,

There is technology coming out in Japan, an artificial set of cat ears. It automatically takes signals from your brain about your mood and moves them accordingly. This will be coming out I think in 2012 or 2013...

I am so excited now...
