Would you choose your mother over your lover?

Your mother and your lover (or best friend) and standing next to each other in the middle of the road. A large truck comes barreling down the road twords them. It is apparent that the truck will hit them and it will be fatal. You still have enough time to push one of them out of the truck's path, but you must choose:

Would you save your mother over your lover, or your lover over your mother? You must choose one.

I know this is hypothetical, but it is some good food for thought. '>

I really dislike these sorts of questions. How is one supposed to make such a decision as this - especially without actually being in the situation?

Realistically, I'd probably panic and get hit along with them, and if I honestly had the kind of time it took me to decide, I'd probably have had enough time to save both of them.

If it's just a toss-up, however, I'd go with my lover, since my mother is psychotic, possessive, overly egotistical, and too paranoid of every sound to ever allow herself to be in the middle of any road.

Well, if you want to look at this logically...if you have a lover, you're at an age where your mother is functionally useless to you. So you might as well let her get hit, seeing as how preserving your mate helps to ensure that you get to reproduce. Saving your mother just retards the cycle and makes it more difficult for your genes to get passed on.


But, realistically, I'd go with what Terastas said. We'd all get hit

I picked my hubby without seeing the question, but that's still the way I'd go. o.o;; I know that my hubby loves and cares for me more than my mom acts like, so I'd feel better having him still alive. Plus, he takes care of me. My mom wouldn't even give me money so I could go to my second semester of college.

I have to null my vote here and say that I'd try for both.  Put in the situation, I wouldn't have time to think over an answer to who I would save anyway, and act with my base instinct and save both of them.  Even if it were to cost myself (The outcome from the question leaves two people alive and one squashed.  If that's me, then so be it), I'd still have to try and help the lover/friend and mum.

I would hopefully have enough guts at the time to run at the truck.  My best freind would have to wait in line behind my mom to kill me, but you never know, it might change something.  I don't think I could save one and live with the fact that I let the other die.  My mom has said several times that she would rather die and let a younger person live, but unless she yelled at me to save the freind instead, I don't think I could make the decision. :-P  Mabey I'm just a coward

I chose my mother, because she has given so much to me in my life so far, and still is. But I am a bit bias, because I have never been in love, nor had a close friend, in my life, so I have unfortunaltyl never experienced what I would be missing. *sighs* but If I had, I don't think I could choose, I would just die along with them.

There's no way I could possibly answer this question with accuracy. I have no idea what I would do under pressure.

I would probably think fast for a way to save both of them, I like to think that I am pretty resourceful.

I dont think I can answer that question under those circumstances mainly because it is a lose lose situation no matter how you look at it, however if I could save both of them and risk myself then that is what I would do...

Would really depend on who I was physically closest too.  Let's face it, I'm not the fastest person alive, good reflexes, sucky speed.  If they were equal distance... then I don't see why I couldn't yank them both to safety.  Otherwise we all die together in some horrible accident and our families are left paying for the estate taxes and funerals.   '>

I'd probably try and save my mother since I don't have a lover.

But if something like this were to happen for real, I'd try everything I could first to get the driver to stop or swerve out of the way.

Well, since they are standing next to each other, it would be plausible to shove one into the other and create a domino effect.....saving both of them.....but if it had to be one or the other, I'd just save whoever was closer to me.....

Replacing "Lover" with "Best Friend", I'd save my Mom. She may give me alot of grief sometimes, but she's my friggin' Mom. She knows how to back off (though sometimes she doesn't choose to apply this knowledge), and we can hold an intelligent conversation... which I can't do with any of my friends.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that I'd save my Mom if all of my friends were to get hit. I often wish they'd just leave me alone anyway.

Eh, I really have no local best friends... nor really any at all! And I couldn't push someone out of state, so...

Actually, I once did drag my mom off the traintracks once XD she was carrying a great deal of stuff so she wasn't that fast. She wondered  why I started purposefully dragging her.

Ditto to that. I can say that for certain since I've been in a similar situation (except it was my dog, not friends or relatives) and my leg's still recovering as a result. Given the choice of trying to save one of them I'd go for my boyfriend though.

I would save my lover. I love my mother, don't get me wrong, but she has already lived most of the best parts of her life, and she'd only be looking forward to being at home every day for the rest of her life if things went otherwise. Whereas my lover is relatively young, and she's got a lot of stuff to look forward to.
