I know darius, but really, who uses win9x on a good machine nowadays? '<img'>
All I want is a license for WinXPpro, because this PC is more of a workstation than a home computer, really... x_x

XP's copy protection is extremely irritating. I don't like companies that support copy protection. I had hoped that it had died out since the 80's but it hasn't. Besides, Win98 runs much better on a C3 powered machine than XP could ever hope to.

VIA Cyrix3. Cheap, low power. Found in those Mini-itx boards mostly.

Chimera Soul it's basicly computers and the components you can put into them.  We're talking of putting high grade stuff in our computers like the hot-rodders do in their cars.  Feel free to ask any questions you like. '<img'>

I use Windows ME on my computer and it runs better than XP faster and more stable.. Espical since I made the computer out of an outdated computer and a pile of thrown out spair parts.

As for overclocking.. my laptop is overclocked and has been running well for afew years.. at 150% CPU speed. runs fine.. but burnt out the onboard sound for some reasion. ?
Admitaldly the case gets hot enough to burn wood.. but then what heatsick case doesn't.

I had good service from most of windows os, i still have a reliable older laptop that runs win 98, my desktop ran Win-ME for almost two years, untill i up-graded to Win XP Pro. Alot of people gave Win ME alot of bad ratings, but it worked fine for me. Both my desktop & new laptop uses XP pro, and my Mac uses OS9.  (i wanted to upgrade that to OS-x , but the older G3 would not support it. it works fine with OS9 anyway.

Now the idea of "Beer" cooling sounds cool ......though it would probally tast a little flat and stale after a year or so flowing through copper, aluminum, and rubber tubing.  ':p'    '<img'>

Hey Chaz, I like your new avatar. Hehe. I overclocked a Toshiba Libretto once. 75->100mhz. It was a day or two old when I did it too. Small machine that was.

In the days when I had my 286-8  I would actualy tinker with the ram refresh rate which would actualy speed it up to 11.6mzh (as high as I could get befor the ram failed).  This was not actualy changing chip speed.  But it bosted me JUST enough to play Amiga .mod files and WingCommander (1) for DOS. =)

That would be a 1mhz 6502. With a whopping 5k of ram. Whee!

*sings* Memories!  I had an Interact with a whole 6k of ram and did 4 colors on the TV screen in the 70's.  That was actualy big stuff back then.  I remember faimly watching on the couch as the computer filled the TV screen with colored blocks (about 30 min to do this) and one of the family saying "That's amazing!".  Used to have HUNDREDS of programs for that thing.  They were loaded on audio cassette tapes and you loaded the program by forwarding the tape to the start of the program and playing the audio of the stored program through to the stop "beep" where you stopped the tape player.  For it's size and time it had some very imaginative games.  Though I never knew anyone else who had one.

Also a fun thought I got my P2 to run at 1Mhz last week.. Yes thats One Mhz, underclocked.. just becouse its possable.. and was a jumper set board without the book..

Have fun all,

Firestorm Six - you said you had a Vic-20? Do you also have the game Escape from Mount Drash? '<img'>

As for Windows Activation - I personally don't feel that this was ever a form of copy protection. I feel that it's a form of user tracking, and it's ridiculously bothersome because some people (ie. me) like to swap parts in and out of their machines from time to time.

Thusly, I don't play with XP. Also, it eats up a lot of memory I'd rather conserve for more important things (like running software applications and games).
Oh, faint memory trickles, that is all; like a stream that rustles forgotten leaves and lost paths.

I agree Wtcher,

XP is too memmory hungry for my liking and with my laptop only having 64MB. I don't run XP.

(man I rember when 4MB was alot of RAM... now I see software at wal-mart recomending 4GM !!! )

I rember the Vic-20 I had to fix afew in my first computer job.
I was there for the 1st Pentum.. I was there the night Windows 95 came out.. *sighs* gods I feel old...

Although I have to admit that XP's a bit too memory-hungry, I think that it does still offer good points, mainly the fact that it supports hyper-threading natively, and the only other alternative would be WIndows 2000 Advanced Server, which specs are nothing to spit at either.

I'd switch to XPpro only for that... because I hate having CPUs that are HT-enabled but not the OS to support it... :\

Firebreath,
The new version of Linux supports Hyper-Threading too.
And that uses alot less memory than any version of windows.
Just an opption

Also does the HT support in WindowsXP make up for the memmory hogging ?

That's what I had! A Vic-20!  '<img'>

There was one game for it, I played it a lot at the time but don't remember the title. Every now and then I will hear the 'tune' on tv and it would bring back memories of playing it! '<img'>

The best idea for a OS is to chose it's job.  For a server platform I go with OS/2 and Linux as the best and most stable.  Win2k has proven stable for apps that require it so we run one of those as well.  For my personal PC I switched from 98 to XP for the stability.  The memory usage is a lot more.  But I remember when it was $100/meg or more for memory.  Now a days you pay $70-$80 reach EACH 512meg DDR.  With these prices memory is not so painful to get these days.
