EDIT - This is Ballad Quill, the gryphon Renaissance musician. See the latest post for my new picture of him as a Disney Tsum Tsum-style toy design.

Hello, Furtopia! :) I'm back to share some more of my artwork.

Here's an illustration of my fantasy short story, "Clap for Ballad". Ballad the gryphon musican visits the the meeting place of the Zoho Skeptics Society. The door is human scale (if slightly smaller than average) to give you an idea of how large Ballad is.

The story: http://forums.furtopia.org/furry-storytelling/gryphon-fantasy-story-on-'non-belief'/

I decided to do a picture that focuses more on setting than characters. This is the home of my Renaissance musicians Ballad Quill (gryphon) -see original post in this thread - and Sondrew Hayne (human) - http://animagusurreal.deviantart.com/art/Sondrew-the-musician-color-version-435271040 . Their apartment is on the top floor. (You can see Ballad's tail showing in the right window). With its high ceiling, it's one of the only apartments in the city that Ballad can fit into. (He enters and exits through a large window in the back, which faces out to sea).

The cafe on the ground floor is a popular hangout for residents of Paromdon-town's Zoho Bridge arts district. The neighborhood sits on a large stone bridge that spans the entrance of Paromdon Bay.

Sondrew can be seen sitting inside the cafe, at the rear table near the painting, along with his friends Sequiel the quest guide - http://www.deviantart.com/art/Sequiel-and-Rumples-the-Unicorn-finished-pic-378090241 - and Arix the werewolf - http://www.deviantart.com/art/She-Werewolf-Warrior-324033308 - (in human form, with her back to the viewer).

A nice drawing with a whimsical feel to it.

Pictures generally help ones mental image of a story.

Great art, not so great history. Cafés were called "coffee houses" prior to the 19th century, and didn't exist outside of the Middle East prior to the introduction of coffee to Europe in the 17th century.

Thanks, Old Rabbit :). I hope this will eventually be an illustration in a novel about these characters.

Great art...

Thanks!

I'm also trying to evoke sidewalk cafes from later periods, but you're right, it is anachronistic. Actually, I'm glad somebody pointed this out, because I almost mentioned something in the description.

Here's how I think of anachronism in period fantasy. In "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", cartoon characters appear that didn't exist in the setting of 1947, such as the penguins from "Mary Poppins" (1964). However, they're all from the Golden Age of theatrical animation.  So the penguins are OK, but if Scooby-Doo or the Ninja Turtles got in there, it would be all wrong.  Likewise, I figure it's okay for my characters to be drinking coffee instead of a more period-appropriate hot beverage. But if one them was listening to an iPod, the whole thing would fall apart  (:.

Of course, it's also possible that coffee caught on in the kingdom of Quintessentia before it reached the rest of Europe ;).

Have you ever thought of doing a comic at all? As a bit  of fun, I think your style would look good as one ^-^

Thanks again, Old Rabbit! :)

Jackie - Thanks! :). I have done a comic as a commission for someone:

http://forums.furtopia.org/artwork-announcements/superhero-comic-commission-shark-and-hyena-vs-giant-lioness/

And I'm currently working on a second comic for him.

I've also considered doing one set in the fantasy universe covered in this thread.

Your style reminds me of... like, those beautifully-detailed illustrations from old children's literature. It has a real sense of story to it, and lots of charm.

Ballad sleeping in his cozy nest, by a large ocean-facing window. (That's his hat hanging on a peg by the window.) Looks like he's sleeping pretty deeply - good thing there's a cafe downstairs to help him wake up for his next gig.

Thanks! :). All the pics in this thread were drawn digitally in Photoshop, with a mouse.

However, some of my older pictures of these characters were pencil/Photoshop hybrids, like this one:

You're welcome, Saiyu :).

This is a design I made for a Tsum Tsum toy of Ballad. (For those who don't know what a Tsum Tsum is, it's a line of Disney toys that basically turns their popular characters a tiny, cute loaf of bread with a Hello Kitty face.)

Ballad Quill, the gryphon musician, and his human musical partner Sondrew Hayne, performing in a basement bar. Magical creatures being generally feared in the kingdom of Quintessentia, they perform here in secret.

The idea here is that Ballad is getting too big for this venue, both literally and figuratively. Dance is part of their act, but they have no room for it here, and poor Sondrew only has a little corner of stage to stand on. Originally, I was going to show them struggling more with this, but I decided they're professionals, and they'd still put on a good show.
