Real-Life Furry Magazines?
« on: October 21, 2006, 05:43:36 pm »
Awhile back...I don't remember when haha, I overheard or read SOMEWHERE about "Furry 'Zines". Nowww...for my questions.

1. Do REAL furry magazines exist? (Mags delivered to your mailbox/post office)

2. If so, would someone refer me to one or more than one?

Chances are this is a stupid question, but hey. Lol

Well there is Furnation. I wanted to suscribe to their magazines for a long time now, but I think I'll need to get a credit or debit card from them. >.<

Said "zines" are more accurately described as comic books.  Specifically, comic books to which multiple contributors submit work, usually for free, and have a theme (or not) rather than belonging to a running series.

They sort-of exist, if you count zines as mentioned above. I've never heard of one that's gone "mainstream" enough to see on the shelves in the newsagent's, though. Mind you, here in the UK the situation is a great deal worse: as far as I know there isn't even a regular zine published in this country any more. (Anthropomorphine is the only one I can think of, and that's long since stopped.)

There should, but there just doesn't seem to be the will. Without getting into the minutiae of British furry politics, there is a sense that furmeets and hedonism come first among many UK furs, and that the level of organisation required for something like a consistently published magazine is simply lacking.

That may be slightly unfair, but it's unarguable that - even allowing for our smaller population - the organised furry scene in the UK, furmeets apart, is almost pathetically scanty. I wish I had the skills or, moreso, the lack-of-shyness to help do something about it. If any UK zine did appear and I had the ability to contribute I would, but it seems a distant prospect at the moment.   ':dead:'

Anthropomorphine isn't stopped as far as I understand (I don't know the fellow i/c it) his website would imply that it's simply on a very long hiatus.... Here's the site, it includes links to the other Zines he organises.

And the guys at United Publications are good for furry magazines/comics and the like. The guys who run that are great and will answer questions in short order.

Those are both UK based, not sure about elsewhere in the world.

Hm, well...
Wouldn't it be great if there actually were magazines of furryness?
I mean, not just comics, but rather an informative block of data of furries, like dates for cons, articles about interesting insides of the fandom, fursuit tips, etc...
THat I'd pay for.

Thats a real shame, but to be honest I would've been more surprised if there actually WAS a mainstream Antropomorphic magazine.  '<img'>

Ohh and I requested a catalog from United Publications, hope theres alot of goodies inside. *Grin*

Okay, I can see the argument there... but the release schedule recently has gone:

Issue 12 - Summer 2001
Issue 13 - Summer 2005

And nothing since that last issue. One issue in the last five years is impossible to consider as anything other than a one-shot "back for one issue only!" revival; I'd think that yearly publication would be the minimum that might reasonably be considered an "actively published" zine.

I know about United Publications, and very good they are too. '<img'> But take out American and Japanese publications and what would they have to sell? Britain has a population one-fifth that of the USA. We don't produce near one-fifth the number of furry publications the Americans do; we don't even have one-fiftieth of them. It's really quite embarrassing.

At one time, wasnt there dozens of furry zines and comics?  Not online, but actually hardcopy?  Mabey a few of the older furs can comment, but I always thought there was quite a bit out there.

The folks involved with Califur have had a regular publication for over a decade.  Think it is called "infurnation" and does list all sorts of fur news from cons, to books, to films, etc.  Check their website for info on how to get it.

If I get good enough at drawing, I'll try to publish mine. Of course, that won't be for another, say, several years! '' But then again, you never know. Megatokyo started as a web comic. The difference is, they started good. I started with a cut-off story, and sprite fillers. ''

Want a better furry comic? Go read Blipfurs. That place is great. '<img'>
