Anyone ever read Animal Farm ?
« Reply #25 on: July 10, 2007, 03:41:25 pm »
Animal Farm is a book I read several times in junior high and high school.  I actually first read it because I wanted to and later because it was required for a class that I was in.

I found it to be a powerful book that showed how social ideals will be corrupted by those in power.   "Some animals are more equal than others", rings so true.

i read animal farm when we were studing the russian revalution. it does a nice job of portraying what happened in the revalution, thats why we read it in the first place. i just wish we could've seen more of Joseph the tame raven. '<img'>

In the movie that I saw (the live action version), the pigs decided to kill Joseph, but I can't remember why though.

Read it several times. I actually have the book somewhere <Looks at all the full boxes from his recent move.

It's a good book, both in terms of fiction and as political satire I thought. For some reason i have a hard time thinking of it as a "Furry" book though.

Me too. I think it's because of the satire. Political satire tends to lend itself to representation.
At least that's why -I- think so.

Animal Farm was not intended as a furry book.

It was written to mock the Russian Revolution.

Jones was the Tsar (or however you spell it),
Napoleon was Stalin,
Snowball was modeled on Trotsky,
and Old Major was based on Karl Marx and Lenin, as well as many other characters.

Tsar is occasionally spelled Czar or Tzar and sometimes Csar or Zar.
You have to admit lots of things weren't meant as a furry thing and yet they end up being used as icons of such *cough* Disney *cough*

Ive read it half a dozen times over the last few years. Its a very well written book, and a good story.  As good as it is though, its not George Orwell's best work.

Animal farm serves two purposes... to poke fun at an opressive and dangerous government, and to show the people who read the book later, what can happen if a government gets out of hand.

But if you like the dark side of Orwell, read 1984. Its very hard to describe.

This is, unfortunately, one of the classics that I haven't gotten around to yet. I would read it but for the fact that the local library branch doesn't have any copies (How can this be? It's George Orwell, for Pete's sake...), and the local Borders wants $10.95, which is far too pricy for such a slim volume.

Actually I read it yesterday just to see what all the fuss is about it.
It was well written, and a charming story. I do have one complaint. I thought the social implications were too obvious, too in your face; as though the author's worldview was being shoved  down my throat somewhat.
You CAN proclaim a social view without making your reader feal that view was forced upon them in the story.
That is my only complaint, though.

Many good quotes from that book, and my favorite is

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others ."

Yes, the social copmmentary wasn't hidden at all, very in-your-face, and most of the animals were just broadly-painted social & personality tropes.

I love that Benjamin the donkey knew what was really going on the whole time, & only stayed to be with his friend Boxer.

I read that a while ago in high school and we watched that live action movie as well, diffidently a little creepy in my opinion as well but a very good read.

In the move I always found those sheep really creepy “Four legs good two legs bad” and “Four legs good two legs better”
"Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.

The cow says “Moo”, the cat says “Meow”, the albino fox furry says “Stop it kid, that’s my tail not a pull string”

Read it in grade school, and it was depressing. I pretty much hated having to read that book.

My favorite book, one of the few I read on my own. I liked 1984 when we read it in school so I checked out more of his stuff. I didn't pick up animal farm because of its anthormophicish characters, but the political tie ins it involved. Not only did it mock the russian revolution, you can find things it in that occur today. It shows how rediculous politics are. It shows that no matter what, in every government there will be those who benefit and lose touch with themselfs, and those who devote their lifes to helping society, and in the end getting crushed themselves. It is a book that everyone should read. Furry or not  ':p'

It's true, but depressing.
A great analogy for the HUMAN life, bad analogy for furries/Therians.
I hated the book, although it was a good eye-opener for human behavior.
