For most general music purposes, I use Fruity Loops FL Studio 4. It's probably the most powerful thing you can use without having to know what the heck you're doing. You can make some really cool things with it too. Observe: http://www.geocities.com/Voxcrystal/Ravencall.htm (made by my friend) Another one I like is Reason 2.5. Considering you can make just about anything with it, it's relatively easy to use. That doesn't mean I know how to use it though. Any makers to add to the list? Comments?

I'm not one to use programs when I have absolutely no clue about anything.  For composition purposes, I use Anvil Studio.  It's free and does everything you need to do for scoring.
If you want programs to screw around with and "make music" when you have no clue what you're doing, I suggest the eJay series.

I don't really 'make' music with the computer, more along the lines of recording...and for that, I use Goldwave.....free(mostly) and easy to use.....only problem is that it isn't a very good program, but I don't really have money to throw around for real studio recording.......

I have a copy of Fruity Loops, but aside from simple Hip Hop beats and techno, I havn't found much of a use for it.

I'd rather learn how to use real instruments.
