New forum rule
« on: January 04, 2004, 05:24:03 am »
By unanimous vote a new rule is now being added to Furtopiaís forums. This is being done to mainly stop individuals from signing up, spamming, and then leaving. †Individuals are not allowed to advertise or recruit on Furtopia forums a non-Furtopia site without discussing it with Furtopia Staff first (this does not include artists showing their art web pages in artwork announcements). What I am talking about is a process called ďuser miningĒ where someone rather than do the work of advertising their site through legitimate channels goes into an established site with the intent of pulling from itís user base as much as they can, often not posting anything else except spam. †Something that has given me pause to think, Iíve recently watched a friends forum twice the size of Furtopia get ripped apart losing most of itís posters to a shell of what it was. A user created a competing forum and offered many positions to get other users to help mine/recruit the existing user base over to the new forums. Itís a process that often works well for the miner as somebody will almost always join in this form of politics. With a noticeable reduction in forumís posts participation dive bombed on that forum.

Iím not saying that will happen to Furtopia (I hope nobody would take advantage like that). But I want others to consider this is really a situation of common courtesy. Many of us here (users and staff alike) have worked ďvery very hardĒ to build membership. Weíve worked long and hard for over a year to get the posting/user rate up to a reasonable amount advertising on search engines, fur link sites, etc by doing the hard grunt work needed to promote a forum. So when somebody comes in who has never posted before decides rather then go through appropriate channels to take what they can and then leave, that IS taking advantage. It shows they donít care if Furtopia is hurt as long as they can take what they want. That is not what we are here for. Furtopia is a community where everybody shares from art to comments on the forums and the growth of that sharing is the benefit to the community.

Furtopia like ANY other forum can be hurt by the introduction of politics, fighting, and or user mining. Since we are learning as we grow this new rule has been voted in so there is no future question as to what is appropriate.

"From now on as a common courtesy and respect to all the hard work the staff and members have put into this place any user who wishes to recruit users for a non-Furtopia site MUST first get permission from Furtopia staff before advertising or PM recruiting on the Furtopia forums."

"Any user who doesnít care and ignores these rules will be banned after a warning and the message removed." Users who request permission can be granted permission case by case basis.

Sounds like a very good idea on the face of it... but I think it's a little ambiguous. What I mean by that is, what does "advertise or recruit" actually mean? For example, a while back there was a thread in the Furtopia forums about furry languages, which interested me as I've done a fair bit of work on Lapine. So I posted about that, and linked to my (non-Furtopia) site which deals with it. What would be the status of a post like that now?

That isn't the same thing, Loganberry. What WS is talking about is someone creating a forum away from Furtopia that has nothing to do with Furtopia and then comes to Furtopia Forums and tries to get OUR members to join theirs and leave ours since we have a great many members now.

Something akin to a doctor 'stealing' another doctor's patients with incentives if they do.

Did this help you understand it better, Loganberry?

(giggles) I don't think anyone is going to be asking you to leave, Sno-Pak.

WhiteShepherd thought of the idea. (smiles)

To try and make things clear as some of this is a judgement call by the staff.  But this is not to change our regular userís normal posting habits.  If you find a cool link to a website and want to talk about it that's fine.  What we're watching for example is when a user signs up and immediately spams for another forum.  Or if a someone wanted to mine or split the user base with politics for the benefit of there site.  This rule is mainly to let staff act quickly on an "abuse" if they see it.  Feel free to continue to share links/websites with your discussions.  However if anyone wishes to ďpro-actively advertise" another forum then itís only common courtesy that they should ask staff first.

Hope that helps clear it up some.  We will have a definitive wording in a few days once staff works out the final details.

Thanks, Kada-Ru and WS - that's pretty much what I'd imagined, but I wanted to be sure. So it's fine to mention links that are relevant to a discussion, but not to just waltz in and start shouting, "Hey, look at my cool site!" with no intention of adding anything to this community. That seems totally sensible, and I certainly support that 100%. '<img'>

I never go to spam anyway, but I think it's a good rule.

As for linking outside of sites-is linking to a forum for a reference (not to say, hey, looky at this forum) banned as well?

agreed 100 % , spamming is the plague of the net, and personally should be outlawed everywhere. Furtopia is a great place that is growing well, with a great & fair staff, a reliable server & host for artists, and great group of people to be around.  '<img'>

I think it's a good rule that often goes without actually being written into most forums' actual terms of service... seeing as the behavior that WS is discussing comes from what is often considered a troll. As we all know, there're many flavors of trolls out there on the net. ':p'

yes deffinutly.. sadly this happens alot on this Nitto drag racing game i play..... scammers try and get everyone to view thier websites, join forums and leave the game. While i like the game alot (besides the problems) i'd never leave it. Besides i usually just laugh at all the dumb scams anyway. I'd never do anything like that here or any website, if i like the site i stick with it, no matter what someone else "tells" me to do. I may get a site here for my mate to upload his artwork to soon. I love this place, i'd never leave it.
Caution.. tis' here is a hyper active dragon ^_^.

(giggles) That would be cool if your mate got a webpage. Just remember, it must contain at least 80% furry. '<img'>
