Virus warning
« on: April 28, 2004, 07:45:29 pm »
It appears one of our members/lurkers on "shawcable.net" is infected with a worm.  This worm is mailing e-mail addresses on the form using a "faked" e-mail address often from other members here (to try and hide the source).

If you are on "shawcable.net" I highly recomend you go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and run a virus scan/removal.  This service is free (must be run with Internet Explorer).  After removal go to your "start" button and then click "Windows Update" install ALL critical updates (this helps prevent infection).  You MUST do this as if your computer is infected it is then harming others.

For all other members I always suggest you run a virus/worm scann ( http://housecall.antivirus.com ) at least once a month.

If anyone has any problems removing a worm/virus from their system please contact staff and we will help.

This is a public furry service announcement from your friendly neighborhood white dog... '<img'>

I've run Housecall on this comp several times.  unfortunately, the ones it DOES pick up are embedded in files in a constant state of use by the comp.  it cannot remove them, and I cannot delete them.  it's the same 5 or six.

throw in a n oveloaded memory, and it's even worse.

mum talks constantly about having this thing wiped and starting over...but we do NOT have the disks for windows itself...this comp was purchased with pre-installed software :P

If it is a virus file itself (and not a system file) you can boot from a floppy disk and then delete those files.  When Windows comes back up re-run housecall.

You could also try booting in safemode with network support (assuming you're on broadband).

You'd just press F8 when Windows NT is starting.

It can be more complicated if you're running a 9x, but I'm too lazy to suggest things unless you actually are running 9x, at which time you could note as such.
Oh, faint memory trickles, that is all; like a stream that rustles forgotten leaves and lost paths.

Windows locks the restore point data, so other programs (including virus scanners) cannot mess with it. Try disabling this (start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> performance -> file system -> *takes new breath* troubleshooting -> disable system restore), reboot the system, run the virus scanner, and re-enable it.

Don't forget to run Windows Update after you clean your system too!

This thread has a lot of good suggestions for getting rid of adware/spyware.

Holy crap, I'm gonna be updating for freaking ages! Not only have I just discovered any number of viruses and trojans, but I've also failed the security tests (all of 'em) I am not happy... '<img'>  ''
its the oddest thing. I really didnt see this coming! We had dinner and talked about going over to his mother's house on Sunday and about getting a puppy. I thought things were getting serious. Then I wake up on Thursday and hes not here! just like that - gone! I asked some of his buddies in the system 32 folder but they didnt know what happened. I just dont understand.........
