Greenfox's Artstuffs
« on: April 05, 2014, 07:56:00 am »
I've been experimenting a little more with arts in my free time.  :) Hopefully I'll be producing more art in the near future, which I'll probably post here.

I'll get started with this Kahjarin drawing (thanks to Avan for inspiration):

I think I've finally got a simple method down for drawing; here's a summary of "The Greenfox Method" (:

1) sketch the outline with a pencil, and tweak it until it looks okay.
2) trace it with a black fine point marker (black)
3) erase the pencil, then scan or photograph the outline
4) use GIMP threshold to filter out the excess noise
5) run the sketch through a super nifty program called potrace, which smooths out all the jaggedness and color issues created by the scanner
--- http://potrace.sourceforge.net/  It has a furry logo too! :D
6) Import the resulting eps file into GIMP, and start making use of the paint bucket tool (and fix minor outline issues)
7) use the gradient tool to create shadows and coloring (and overuse Ctrl-Z)
8) Done!

"Call now and we'll send you 6 (of the same) instructional DVDs for only $39.99.  Just pay shipping and handling!"  :D

Anyway, I welcome suggestions on both the work and the method.

cool, nice to see you got this up already

For just the 3rd drawing you've ever done seriously, this is a great start! Keep up the good work!

I always prefer to use the airbrush for shading then smooth it out a bit with a smudge tool but I would suppose the gradient tool would work as well. and one more quick tip I learned from a bunch of people, Layers are your best friend in the whole world, I use at least 3 layers depending on what I am doing, one for line art, one for color, one for shading and if you add a background put it in its own layers it will save a lot of time and frustration later down the road

Looking good! keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more!

I tried the airbrush thing, but I can't seem to get it to work right  :P.  Oh well...  I do still blur the edges of the gradient so it looks nice, and sometimes I feather the edge of the selection for the same effect.  I'll get better as I get practice. :)  I need to break the bamboo tablet out again, I think; then fiddle with the broken driver for the next week. x_x

Thanks.  Turns out, I didn't need it after all.  I must be missing a kernel module (I'm using a custom kernel), because when I booted with the stock kernel, it all works great.  The system is slower though...

EDIT: Wow, this works great! :)  I formally commend Wacom for their excellent support.  That driver site is actually real helpful too.

Testing out the old tablet and software.  It's pretty weird drawing like this (I bought the thing for doing maths), but I'm getting used to it (and having a lot of fun in the process).
Here's the results:

I'm not feeling quite right about the proportions though...

The head looks quite good. I would suggest more practice on the body.
Looking at pictures of real animals always helps too.

It takes a while to get used to drawing tablets.

Keep up the good work. :orbunny:

On the head, i believe the only significant thing throwing it off is the mouth position (too high), which overall makes it a great starting head.

Thanks for the feedback guys! :)

I do really need to figure out bodies.  I just need to find a tutorial I can actually follow...  If anyone knows one that's good for someone not well versed in the terminology and whatnot, I'd love to hear about it.

Personally, we never used tutorials, it was always just studying references intensively, memorizing them and what to look for, and looking at other artists and seeing what they did that worked, and what didnt work, then identifying what they did wrong to cause something to not work.

I'm working on a new thingy right now; its not finished (I'll add in a background and stuff), but here's the partially finished version.  I'm finally starting to get used to the tablet, so I've been experimenting a bit.  I'm going to try to fix some of the proportions tonight.  Any suggestions on how it could be improved are definitely appreciated.

UPDATE: --------------------------------------------------------

Okay, well!  I have mostly finished the thingy.  Here is the much-improved version 2 (NOW IN TECNICOLOR!) (:

Thanks to redyoshi49q for extensive help with the moon.  And yes, I realize that it is a bit lopsided  ;).

Yay! (:

Due to the fact that my server basically crashed and burned, I'll now probably keep all my images at this address now:

Its great because now, I can add descriptions.  And its sooo easy. :)

Your doing pretty well with side views. You should try
front and 3/4 views too.

Remember something that is hard to draw is usually only
hard because it hasn't been learned yet.

I used to hide hands because I couldn't draw them well.

As usual, you are right Old Rabbit. ;)

Hence:

I've also added some background descriptions for most of the images.  When my site goes back up (rrrg... :goldpissed: 2 days of downtime) I can upload the associated mythology.

And, so ends my brief affair with imgur... (: :D
Its not really great for this sort of thing, so now that my site is back up, I've moved my stuff back there.  I loaded some new software called "ZenPhoto", which is pretty nice.

So, its all here now:
http://www.tamalin.org/arts

Also, got some new stuff up, and more in the pipeline... :)

Come to think of it, I could some advice on this one.  It's definitely not finished, but I don't know what to do with it now ;).

I'm kinda at a loss about what other elements I could apply to the image, so if anyone has any suggestions, please share! :)
