Am I the only one with this problem?
« on: September 19, 2005, 08:22:16 pm »
It's been litterally plauging me.

I have a truckload of great, original ideas swimming in my head, ready to be etched on paper.  The problem is that they never make it onto paper.

Ive got an empty sketchbook lying around and a bunch of books, but the pen never hits the paper.  I can pace around all day litterally forcing myself to draw, but I cant seem to get to it.  When I actually do try to do something, I usually go at it for a bew, and stop/trash it out of frustration.  It really hinders my writing, which is something I excel at, and my drawing, which I've been dying to improve upon since 2002/3 -ish.

Is this a phase, something im stuck with, or something I can maybe cure over time?  Just want some input.  No intention to troll/rant.

*nodnods* can definitely identify with that horrible feeling of having multitudes of ideas, but simply not being able to get them down onto paper. I just emerged from about a two month period of art block. Nothing I put down on paper was good enough, it was all garbage.

Time tends to help this. I ended up taking on a couple of trades to motivate myself again when I felt like I was ready to start drawing again. You're not stuck with it. But I found trying to force myself out of it just wasn't helping.

Lastly, welcome to Furtopia. Feel free to introduce yourself up in the Furry Greetings section.

Nope. I have that problem to. Everytime I get a new sketchbook it sits on the shelf for more than a year... completely empty. Where-as my lined notebook gets stuff with aswomeness of bordem. Or stolen blank paper from the printers when I used to go to school.

I also, b4 class and after lunch used to make quick stops by the art room and snag a buttload of paper. The art teacher was ok with it... until he ran out. '<img'>

I find that it's best not to force yourself to draw. If I'm in a slump I also find that I don't have to draw to get out of it, I doodle. Sketch random cute useless stuff for a while. If I have an idea I want to draw I start by doodling random stuff to warm up and it just starts flowing. Time and practice will see you improving and it becomes much easier to take your ideas and put it on paper.

Right now I have ideas, but I just don't have the motivation to put them on paper.  After school/commissions I'm just too tired to work on my own pictures.

Oh boy, I can totally relate to what you're saying. My art always comes in big stretches...I'll get in a groove where I put out some good stuff, and that motivates me to draw more and more. But as soon as something goes sour, I start losing confidence, and I just actively don't want to draw anymore. It's been keeping me from making a lot of progress and it's quite annoying...but hey, at least you're not alone!  '<img'>

I had to at one point literally lock up my art stuff and refuse to let myself doodle or draw for a while because I'd almost burned myself out.  My art was coming out horrible, and I was getting too stressed over it.

Sometimes you just need a break.  Try not drawing or trying to force yourself to draw for a while and then ease back into it slowly.

Of course, this won't work for everyone....

Oh man, I have that CONSTANTLY. MILLIONS of ideas and a malfunctioning drawing hand is an artists hell.

(Well, technically, an artists hell would be a simple hall filled with the quality that one always strived for but never quite achieved during their lifetime. At least thats what I heard.)

I personally don't do anything about it and just let it play its course out. Because I know that once it's over, I'll pump out 50 pictures in a day before I fall back into the art block pit again the day after. :P

Most of my best work has come about when I was supposed to be doing something else (usually for school).  I've had days when I cranked out pages and pages of stuff, and don't remember a thing my professors said all day.

Well, I broke out a little kitty face today.  Not quite furry though, Its essentially an anime face /w ears and whiskers/nose, but it's a start.  Still contending with the problem, but I'll see it through.

I've been trying to delve into "true" furry works, but all my books are those usual Anime books I've gotten as gifts over time.  I guess my own style will develop out of it.  I still have Betty Edwards book sitting on my shelf.

found when I do feel like drawing again I have improved
a little. You will know when your ready..

Then when I do get back I can't draw enough.
Or find  enough time. ':p'

Good luck.

Look at other peoples artwork for a while and get inspired. That's what usually breaks me out of art slump.

What really frutrates me is my mind's ability to cook up a masterpiece of uber-advanced art. I then try to branch off this magnificent idea, then I frustrate myself because I haven't the art skills yet to do justice to my ideas.

i.e. I have beem cooking an entire 'music/flash animation' project. the only problem is, it is way to extravagant and  i barely know how to make moving GIF images. it drives me crazy because when i hear the song, i'll run this entire 'memory video' through my head in sync with the music, but the horrible truth plays through that it is almost impossible for me to achive what i want to do with the project.

then i also get into slumps like you describe. it's natural. What i do is try to listen to music, climb trees, look to others' art for inspiration, ect. just give it time and it should clear up for you. Good luck! '<img'>
